##### THE ST HANDBOOK #####
###########################
####################
##### REVIEWED #####
####################
###############################
##### BY JAMES L. MATHEWS #####
###############################
The ST HANDBOOK is a new magazine to hit the P.D. market. It is a magazine
aimed at ATARI users who want to find out more about the P.D. scene. It
contains reviews, explanations and articles on ST related topics. It comes
out twice a month and costs £2.50 (the first two issues have been £2) and
comes printed on A5 paper along with a free cover disk. It is available
from distributing P.D.L.'s or directly from Victor Wright (the editor) at
the following address...
ST HANDBOOK
1 FORDHOUSE LANE
STIRCHLEY
BIRMINGHAM
B30 2NH
For more information, read the advert in this issue. Anyway, on with the
review...
The ST HANDBOOK is a good, new idea for a paper based magazine for P.D. and
we intend on getting a full, exclusive interview with Vic by POWER #17 for
you to read. The ST HANDBOOK is printed with quality printers and isn't
just some sort off flimsy paper product done on a 9 pin printer, it's all
been professionally done and it looks good.
The content is a bit basic in places but it's early days. Grammar and
spelling seems to be a bit of a problem but again, it's not too bad. The
articles it contains are based on a variety of ST based subjects including
articles and information from none other than me!!! That's the nice thing
about THE ST HANDBOOK...It's a glossy mag but it gets all the contributions
and articles from people in the ST scene just like a disk magazine which
adds a much friendlier, nicer feel to it all.
The cover disks are compiled by P.D.L.'s but so far, I think that they
haven't been too good...Well, by saying that, they HAVE had some good
software on them, but it's old stuff. Anyway, I should be doing a cover
disk in conjuction with POWER P.D. for it soon so look out for that!
The reviews are very short but not really much shorter than the ones in all
the other glossy mags in the P.D. section although I noticed that THE ST
HANDBOOK doesn't review any commercial software. Whether this will change
I don't know.
There's some very interesting reading material including an on-going comic
under the name of THE ST RANGER which will entertain some readers.
So far, the magazine has been about 40 pages thick and I would definitely
say that if you haven't already read a copy, you should order one. It's
better for beginners rather than experts I feel as there are no programming
articles or very technical articles, just good and simple explanations and
interesting ST related reading material but saying that, it would still
attract a good lot of 'experienced' users I think.
Basically, I think that you should order at least one copy of this
magazine, just have a little flick through and see if you like it. Hanging
on for issue 3 may well be worth it as it seems to be improving and I fell
it will be getting bigger and better in the month's to come so keep your
eyes open for it and have a little squizz.
POWERFUL:
---------
Some intersting reading materials.
Good competition prizes.
Simple, well explained articles.
Free cover disk.
Very, very proffesional looking.
POWERLESS:
---------
A bit on the thin side at present.
Grammar and spelling fails it at points.
POWER RATING:82%
POWER COMMENT:
"A new glossy mag that may well take your fancy! - Worth a look!"
