YOUR QUESTIONS AND QUERIES ON THE ST

It's back! Once again, we have the Technical Help Corner and we're hoping
to stay.
The idea of this column is that if you have any queries, questions or
problems with your ST, then you can write in with them and I'll try my best
to answer them. If I can't, then I'll ask about and if we still don't get
an answer, we'll put it to the POWER readers.
Your query can be about anything ATARI related, whether you want to know
how to format a disk or what's so good about the Falcon...We'll help you!
If you are writing about a problem with your ST, give us as much
information about your ST as possible, i.e. the TOS version, amount of
memory and so on.
Send your problems and queries to the normal POWER address. Meanwhile,
here is this month's Technical Help Corner...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear POWER,
I have an STE with 4 megabytes. I upgraded it to this
configuration from a one meg machine roughly a month ago but since then, I
have purchased a couple of STE only P.D. disks which on boot up have come
up with an error message saying that I do not have an STE. I am worried
that I might have damaged my STE when fitting the upgrade which I fitted
myself but all my other STE programs work.
What's wrong?
From Nathan Edmonton
POWER REPLIES:
You MAY have damaged your STE but by the sounds of it, I doubt it very
much. The problems you are probably experiencing are TOS differences. You
don't state your TOS but basically, there are two different STE TOS
versions...1.6 and 1.62. The latter is the newer, improved version. The
problem is that ifthe STE only program you are loading up was written when
STE's first came out then it may not be compatible with TOS 1.62 and
therefore doesn't recognise it as an STE and gives you a message saying
that you do not have an STE.

Dear James,
I'm going over to America next week for a well deserved Easter
break so if you could reply quickly, I would appreciate it.
My problem is linked to going to America. I understand that software is
much cheaper over in America and it is much more plentiful. The thing I
want to know though is whether American software will work on my English
ST. I don't want to come back with lots of software that doesn't work.
From Peter Chui
POWER REPLIES:
As far as I know, the software should work fine. By the time you read
this, you should be back from your holiday so I hope that you enjoyed it!

Dear James,
I know that this probably sounds a bit stupid to say the least
but is it possible to get a data tape recorder for my ST like with the old
ATARI 800? I want it because with the tape recorder, it was possible to
save your program to it but also record normal music and speech with the
aid of a normal cassette recorder and therefore it was easy to mix high
quality speech and sound effects with a simple program. I know it's a step
back in time but I hope that you can give me good news.
From Darren Place
POWER REPLIES:
Sorry, there are no tape decks for the ST simply because nobody wants them
anymore and therefore a port for them were not made in the ST.
I suggest that if you want speech and music in your programs you get hold
of a sampler for a similar price to what a tape deck would have cost and
then you can sample speech which will be reasonably high quality compared
to a tape deck and are easy to use with the aid of a programming language
or tracker such as The Empire Noisetracker.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's it for this month but keep sending in those technical problems!
