BITE MAGAZINE ISSUE 1
*********************
AVAILABLE ONLY FROM CALEDONIA PDL
*********************************
REVIEWED BY KEEFY
*****************
BITE!, is a new disk magazine, aimed at the general Atari user, and to
regular readers of the defunct STEN, it will bring back fond memories. But
by Jake Bain at Caledonia PDL, it's hoped that the magazine will become a
regular feature on the ST scene. There are no release dates given, the mag
will simply be released as and when there are enough articles to facilitate
a release.
Anyway, the magazine itself uses the familiar STEN shell system, so most
of us should immediately feel at home with it. For those of you who
haven't seen the shell, a picture is displayed, and a mouse click takes
you to the main-menu. This is a no-frills black text on white
background, point and click menu. It's a little plain, but then you don't
really need anything more. Once you've selected an article, it's loaded
and displayed. There are various options available via drop-down menus at
the top of the screen. You can scroll the text up and down using either
the mouse or the keyboard cursor keys. Using the mouse is a little awkward
though, to use one of the various scrolling options, you simply move the
mouse until it is over the icon you want and it does it, but the small size
of the icons, plus the fact that you don't have to actually click the mouse
to activate them, can make for the occasional problem. A slight accidental
movement of the mouse results in the wrong icon being selected. Still, this
is a minor quibble. The displayer itself is very fast, and of course you
can still use the keyboard.
Article-wise, it must be said that there aren't that many of them, but
having said that, totting up the average article size it adds up to over
15k each; 340k worth of text. For a first issue that isn't bad at all.
The articles themselves are very STEN-like, with the same varied mix of
subjects and features, from the serious computing to the completely daft.
There's an ST glossy magazine comparison, a personal opinion of a
particular P.D. library, an extensive look at Pretty Good Privacy, some
info about hard drives, some humorous mickey takes of piracy, some excerpts
from Little Women, and a series of really excellent articles on the subject
of UFO's which I thought was the best part of the magazine. It took me a
good while to read it all.
To fill the disk up, there's a small mix of Public Domain software,
including a GDOS replacement.
To sum it up, a good first issue, certainly better than some of the others
I've seen recently which consist of nothing more than reviews of old
software and adverts. With a bit of luck there will be more to come. BITE
is available exclusively from Caledonia.
POWERFUL
--------
It's new, and it's a diskmag. Anything keeping the ST alive is great.
Interesting articles.
Big articles.
POWERLESS
---------
Scrolling icons are a bit of a pain.
Could do with more articles.
