--- BY GARY SIMMONS ---
Another month, another couple of bytes of burble from yours truly. Every
month I say this will be a short chat, and every month I seem to go on for
ever, but this time I am going to be short and I may possibly lose a few
friends too!(?).
First, the news and gossip I have picked up; Not much I'm afraid as I have
been really busy with ASCIILUM, but more on that later. In recent months I
have mentioned a guy called David Pettifer as he was starting a diskmag
called ATARI UPDATE. Well his first issue was produced and a good first
effort it was too. However, I have been told by David that he has now
merged with two other companies to produce a total of 7 diskmags under the
banner of DYNAMIC PUBLICATIONS. The mag will now be bi-monthly, licenceware
and use a hypermedia system to display its documents. This means that it
can combime samples with graphics and animations as well as text. It
all sounds interesting and I will let you know as things progress.
Next is my PDL called ASCIILUM (play on words between ASCII and ASYLUM). It
is, at last, after many months of work, in an almost fit state to be let
loose on the public. It is a shame that I find myself starting a PDL at the
same time as James has made POWER P.D. 'commercial' but we can assure you
that it just happened that way and was purely coincidental. However, we
are good mates and we have agreed to work together to try and stimulate and
keep alive the ST scene for both you and ourselves as long as we can. BUT,
we both need your support so send off for a catalogue to ASCIILUM, you
never know, there may be something there that could save your life!
Please check out the ASCIILUM ad in the ads section for more details.
Talking about support for the ST scene, James and I have an idea (a bloody
big one too!) that will most definitely need your support, but could also
be incredible fun. It is too early to go into details but watch this
space later in the year for the most POWERful news.
(NOTE TO THE EDITOR: James, careless talk costs lives!)
(NOTE TO THE AUTHOR : Gary, my pet rock isn't moving!)
This next bit will be a bit boring to most of you so skip it as it is just
an apology to some people. To those contacts that I have ignored over the
past few months as I have been busy with ASCIILUM - please accept my
apologies but things should get better now. Thanks for sticking with me
even though replies have been a long time coming. Special mentions to:
CHRIS SHARP
DAVID PETTIFER
DEREK PAYNE
JAMES DAVIDSON
MARK NOBES
JOHN HAYWARD
ANTHONY GREEN
JOHN LIEVER
PAUL WOMAR
ED. CLEVELAND
ANDY MORGAN
KEEFY
LIAM GOOD
JAMIE BLAKENEY
A new hello to DALE WRIGHT
And apologies to those not mentioned
Now the last bit, which is a bit of a moan. Every month there are a few
people who give time and in some cases money (Dale Wright is a good
example) to make POWER possible and do their bit to make having an Atari a
good interactive interest. This is good for all of us so why is it they are
not encouraged by those that use and enjoy what they do? I am to blame as
well as anyone else but why don't we encourage these people? Is it because
we regard it as free? Is it because we as humans have no regard for
anything free? I don't know the answer but what I do know is that the thing
that will finally kill the ST scene is lethargy.
Ok, so what has got me on my soap-box and what gives me the right to go and
lecture anybody? Nothing really except it dawned on me this month when I
heard that the STOSSER crew were giving up STOSSER due to lack of support.
I heard this when I was really getting worried about the competitions and
articles I hadn't done for POWER. It then occurred to me that the only
person who was worried about it was me! (and me! - POWER). In the past
10 or 11 months, I have been doing stuff and competitions for POWER and
asking for contacts yet I have only had about 6 or 7 replies (you know who
you are - thanks guys!) and I know that other disk magazines get even worse
responses so what the hell was I beating my brains out for? I then looked
back through past issues of POWER and was not suprised to see people who
once contributed a lot, slowly fade away. Could it be that they too
wondered if anyone out there was looking at the stuff they took the time
and trouble to send in?
It may be egotistical but I thought that Diary of an Amiga User was really
funny. I also thought that Dear Gary would have a longer life but even
though I asked for help, none came - so they finished. After giving 10
disks away every month for the mini competitions, I have only ever
had two direct comments about it, (one from Jamie Blakeney, the other from
Dale Wright) yet I know that they are very popular. So I shall have to
think about that as well.
Now I know this is not putting me in a very good light with you guys but it
really has to be said or the amount of people who are prepared to make the
effort will reduce to the point that the only use your Atari will have is
to be a very expensive door stop. If you see that someone is trying or
contributing then drop them a line. Don't just tell James you like what
they do; tell them direct! Has anyone noticed that Dale Wright gives
loads of commercial software and hardware away? Has anyone dropped him a
line to see if he wants to swap P.D. or to say hello? If not, how long can
we count on him doing it? I must admit that I have been lapse on this as
well so I intend to make an effort or he will also get fed up and stop as
well.
Well, I am winding myself up and probably making you mad so I will close
now. Sorry if this has been a bit of a lecture but as I said before, I
am concerned that genral lethargy will be our undoing.
