--- BY KEEFY ---
Hiya people! Yep, it's me again, boring old Keefy. Once again I've
nothing to do for a little while, so I've decided to reveal my thoughts
of the moment to you all again, not that you want to read them that is, but
I'll do it anyway. I won't bother with the necessary Government Warning
this time...
Well, what have I been doing with myself this month? I have to be honest;
not a great deal! As most of you will probably know by now, STOSSER has gone
to the great RamDisk in the sky. I have to say that I was generally
disappointed, but looking back having made the decision, I'm looking forward
to a lot more freedom to do other things. As James will no doubt tell you,
editing a disk-magazine is a heck of a lot of work. It involves much more
than just plonking a load of text files together on a disk every month.
There's all the letters you have to reply to, writing to people asking if
they can do stuff, and much more. Fortunately for me I'm out of work (Is
it really that fortunate mate?! - POWER), but James has school as well. I
honestly don't know how he finds the time. Maybe he's wagging it or
something? (No, I simply don't have a social life or understand what a T.V.
is! - POWER). I think I'll ring up his headmaster and grass him up. Well,
I would if I knew his school anyway. What I'm trying to say here is
basically, don't let James do all the work. Contribute!
So now what do I do with myself? I've suddenly discovered that I have
about an extra 10 or so hours extra free time this week. Most people
would probably bugger off out to the pub for a few hours or something,
and normally the idea or downing 10 or so would appeal to me greatly.
However, finances dictate that I've as much chance of going out for a
couple this week as I have of bedding Melissa Hart (well someone had to
mention her if Chris is in America!). Then I thought I would settle down
and watch a bit of Star Trek or Red Dwarf. I probably would have if it
hadn't been for the 20 hours or so I had spent watching them yesterday. So
what do I decide to do? Sit down at the computer once again and do a bit of
nattering! Ah, there's nothing like wiggling your hands about a bit and
watching little white dots in the shape of letters appearing on screen.
Since I sent out the final issue of Stosser to everyone, I've spent pretty
much every day sat at the computer experimenting with STOS. It seems as if
I am finally getting somewhere and at last the computer is doing things that
I want it to do and not something that someone else has told it to do. Some
of you may have received a sort of preview of a football game I was doing.
Not many of you mind 'coz I only sent it out to a few. This has now been
ditched in favour of a few other ideas. None of them are revolutionary
(except to me), but when they are finished, they should be quite good. But
this time I'm keeping them well to myself until I've got something worth
showing anyone. I actually finished one of my programs last month. A simple
little sample player and manipulator. This might seem nothing major to
most, but to those of you who know me well, this is a positive miracle.
Usually, I spend a couple of days on something, then it goes back into
the disk box never to be seen again. In fact, I can only ever remember
finishin g 2 programs properly. That is apart from intro's and stuff
I've done for Golden Dawn sample disks and stuff.
KEEFY PDS is taking off at last. Following the recent mentions in ST
Handbook, I've had piles of enquiries, and quite a lot of people have sent
me disks for swapping. There's now more than 900 disks in the collection and
it's growing at a phenominal rate. So if any of you out there are currently
writing a program and it's nearly finished, don't forget to include me on
your list of people to send a copy to when it is complete (and me! -
POWER).
If it won't be finished for some time, then maybe I can help you out
still. Maybe you're writing a game or something, and want somebody to
play test it. Send me a beta-test version, and I'll be happy to try it
out a bit for you. Obviously, anything you send me in this manner will
be in the strictest confidence, and once I've finished play testing it
for you, it will be completely deleted. As the occasional programmer
myself, I know how difficult it can be to spot bugs and errors whilst
working on your own, and sometimes all you need is another pair of eyes.
Having said that, don't send me stuff if a little criticism offends you
easily.
Reading through the last issue of POWER, I came across the reports on the
recent Atari shows. I have to say that these articles are probably some of
the most interesting that I have ever read. I am hoping to attend the next
show in Birmingham, and if those reports were anything to go by, it should
be a really good one. I'm planning on meeting up with Tony Greenwood there,
and hopefully a few more of you. So if you're planning on attending, maybe
you should get in touch and we'll all meet up and have a few beers whilst we
all talk Atari. This was something we were hoping to do with the STOSSER
Convention and I must say it was looking very promising with about 20 people
paid up to attend. Unfortunately, the train strikes came along, and stayed.
Because the strikers only had to give a weeks notice of the next stoppage we
decided that we had no choice but to cancel the event, just so that we'd
have enough time to tell everyone. In the end it turned out that we made the
correct decision because the date of the convention coincided exactly with a
48 hour strike, with Wednesday smack bang in the middle of it. I must admit
I was really looking forward to it, because I've only met a few fellow
Atarians; Tony Greenwood, Colin Pratt, Deano, Ian Holden and a couple of
others. I've got about 50 contacts, most of whom I've had for a long time,
so it would be great to see everyone in the same place. (Remember that I,
James, will be making an appearance at the London show in December too! -
POWER).
Some of you might remember a couple of months ago in POWER with my last
CHIT CHAT, I was moaning about ST Format. Well, I've been looking at it
recently in WHSmith recently, and it seems that they are getting the
message. I've heard of a couple of features they are planning which are
aimed directly at the P.D. scene. All I can say is at "last!", something is
being done, though i just wonder whether or not they are too late. I've
heard various conflicting reports about the future of ST Format and it would
be a bit of a shame if they left the scene just as they are starting to
get things right again.
Complete change of subject now and onto my beloved 'footy'. It's been a
pretty eventful season so far. At last it looks like there are teams
around good enough to beat Man U. I must admit, I'm really pleased to
see Newcastle Utd. at the top. They look invincible at the moment. I saw
the highlights of their European match last week, and they were incredible,
beat the living daylights out of them. They also gave Coventry a good
stuffing too. I just hope that they can keep it up. As regards Coventry,
at last we've managed to win a match. I have to admit I'm still quite
worried about how we are going to do without Phil Babb. At the moment our
defence has more holes than a tea strainer.
Well, I think that's about your lot from me. Hopefully I'll see some of
you at the Birmingham Atari show. For now though...
LIVE LONG AND PROSPER
