If you have a major gripe with POWER, a special love of POWER or any
suggestions for POWER then the letters section is here to make your
suggestions public. If you have a story that you want to tell or tale that
you want to share then the letters section is here to tell that story in.
If you have an opinion on something computer related, have some problems or
questions you want answered or you simply want to say hello to all those
hundreds of POWER readers out there then once again, the letters section is
here to help you do that.
After lots of thought, I have decided to scrap the TECHNICAL HELP CORNER
along with THE PROGRAM SUGGESTION CORNER. They were useful to those that
used it but I don't think that they make for particularly good reading
unless you sent in a problem and response was poor so from now on, if you
have a problem to be answered or are looking for a particular program then
your letter may well be published here in these pages.
All letters received at my address will have the chance of being printed so
if you don't want your letter appearing in POWER, please say so. If you
would especially like a particular letter to be published in POWER then it
would be best if you could save it to disk in ASCII format or FIRST WORD
(PLUS) format. I retain the right to edit (within reason) letters to be
published...Bla, bla...Blurb, blurb...Rattle, rattle...Chat, chat...
Right, well here's a few of the printable letters received in the POWER mail
box (3 Salisbury Rd, Maidstone, Kent, ME14 2TY) this month...

Dear POWER,
Just a quick note to say well done on getting to issue 21. It's well
deserved, and each issue gets better and better. However, the 24th issue of
POWER is the one I'm looking forward to. Your 2nd birthday!
I hope the inclusion of the Freaked Out source code on THE REGISTERS EXTRA
DISK #2 was enjoyed by everybody. It will enable those with TOS 1.62 to play
the game, whereas compiled versions don't work.
Finally, I don't know why, but on some machines the System Info command on
the Supreme Software Group document displayer doesn't seem to work. If
anyone could send me more info on what is happening, and possibly why, then
do let me know. The thing is, it works on my machine, so I'm stumped!
Anyway, keep up the good work James!
From Chris Sharp
POWER REPLIES:
Thankyou for your compliments Chris. With regards to FREAKED OUT (the
compiled version) not working with TOS 1.62, there is no need to worry as I
fixed it before it was released on POWER so nobody should have experienced
any problems. If you did though, please get in touch.
As for Chris's letter last month saying that he was off to live in America
for a year, this was actually a joke and he is NOT going. He simply
led me to believe that he was leaving Britain and the ST scene to get me
back for a trick I played on him a while ago which involved him thinking he
was getting a free hard drive.

Dear POWER,
It has now been some time since I have corresponded with you as
I took offence to some of the inane and stupid comments from some of your
less-intellegent and small-minded readers. However, it appears that Mr.
Ryan Simpson is no longer writing and it looks like the 'Mellissa junkie'
Mr. Chris Sharp is now off to America. What Joy! Perhaps you can now get
down to the serious business of writing a diskmag worth paying a
registration for. All that is now needed is to stop including the drivel
that you pass off as humour from Deano and Gary Simmons, include a few
competitions worth winning and get back to giving a larger amount of P.D. on
disk as you did in the early days of POWER disk magazine.
The lack of P.D. on disk is something that I would like to expand upon. I
have mentioned before in previous letters that I am sure the majority of
your readers would prefer less silly competitions and senseless ramblings
from some of your readers and more free programs, after all, the cover disks
on the ST publications are the only reason why we buy them and probably the
same goes for some of your readers. Do you not think that you will lose
readers if you don't give away more P.D.?
I expect my viewpoint will not appeal to all but it will at least give that
sad little person who calls himself 'Hobbit Hater' something to moan about
so come on Hobbit Hater, do your worst!
From The Hobbit
POWER REPLIES:
Nice to have you back Mr. Hobbit! We've all been wondering where your
'constructive critisim' had gone to. Well, to your letter then...
Firstly, Chris Sharp is NOT off to America. That was all a little joke on
Chris's part to get me back for a previous joke played on him by me so you
will continue to have his stuff in POWER to read.
With regards to putting more P.D. on disk, I can only say that the content
at present is how the majority of the readers want it. Every month, there
is a file in POWER called OPINION.DOC which you can fill in with all your
opinions on POWER. From here, I work out what it is that people want in
POWER, what people don't want and so on. From letters and these opinion
forms, it would seem that more text is preferred to more P.D. If it is P.D.
that you want, then buy a P.D. disk from my library (POWER P.D. - Only 99p a
disk including Postage and packaging!) but a disk magazine is mainly created
for the reading material. You wouldn't go and buy a radio and then say,
"Well, I want it to show pictures because that's what most other people
want"...Would you? If you wanted something that showed pictures, you'd buy
a T.V. It's the same here...Why are you reading POWER if everything you
want is not here but elsewhere?
In relation to writing a disk magazine that is worth registering, why do you
say that? You registered POWER #20 (thanks!). If you honestly think that
the magazine is not worth registering and you sincerely have not enjoyed the
magazine then I don't expect you to register. That's the whole point in
Shareware, if you don't like it, then you don't have to register it but if
you do and you want the extra's (I offer a free disk full of more articles
and competitions along with loads more P.D. to anyone that registers their
copy of POWER), then you do.
Finally, please stop slagging off my contributors (in this letter you
slagged off Deano, Chris Sharp, Ryan Simpson and Gary Simmons). Fine, you
may not like the stuff that they write - Not everything in this magazine
will appeal to everyone but at least they're trying and contributing, unlike
you. It is people like you who are killing the scene in the way Gary
Simmons has mentioned in his Chit Chat this month.
Hobbit, I -CAN- take harsh words against me or my productions but it seems
that what you say, you don't fully believe in, you just do it to stir up
trouble and make yourself look better...I can tell you that you are NOT
respected for it. I have had tens and tens of letters about you since you
popped up in POWER and apart from two, they have all been disgusted with
what you write. It's not the fact that you don't like POWER because I -
KNOW- that not everyone is going to enjoy reading POWER but they simply find
a different disk mag (unfortunately there's not much of a choice anymore
though!) or express their views in a more civil way. Fill in an opinion
form Hobbit and if your suggestions and opinions are valid and reasonable
then I'll see what I can do.
I dunno...You make me sound like twice my age (four and a half).
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Dear POWER,
The following is aimed at Deano...
If you want to transcript a Python sketch, transcript a bloody Python
sketch. Don't try and pass their masterpieces off as original work from
your tiny mind by adding a few tedious schoolboy jokes, puerile references
to sex\ and pieces of offensive playground homophobia.
As for D.S. Silly - This is just a badly-written incarnation of Sparkes and
Kennedy's policemen characters from Absolutely. The latter was genuinely
funny because of its obvious incongruity - Your D.S. Silly just stretches
the stolen idea far beyond breaking point and turns it into childish
nonsense in the process.
It's obvious that you can't write humour to save your life; this may come as
a suprise to you, but the word "pooh" is only really amusing to under-fives,
and only Les Dawson jokes are nothing but tedium. Stick to the STOS advice,
eh?
From The Cynical Bastard
POWER REPLIES:
I think that many of my readers would disagree with your above comments
Mr. B' but you are free to express your views. I have published your letter
to allow Deano to possibly stand up for himself if he so desires. Deano,
it's over to you.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Dear POWER,
I hope that I'm not too late to get this letter published in POWER
#21 but I've just seen STOSSER #18 and seen that it's the final issue. I
can't believe it! Another one gone! Reading through the magazine, I
realise that it is due to lack of contributors. I have never really read
STOSSER but whether it was my favourite disk magazine or my worst, the fact
that yet another ST disk magazine has come to an end shows that we readers
really aren't getting it right. Very few disk magazine producers stop
because they want to. If they got enough support (and I'm sure that you
agree with me here James), then they would never want to stop. An ST
enthusiast is always an ST enthusiast and will always want to do as much for
the scene as possible. However, if the disk mag doesn't get any support
then the producer won't have any motivation and (s)he will have no reason to
continue.
POWER is now approaching its second birthday which for most disk magazines
is a very old age. I would like to see POWER carry on for many years after
that though and if it DOES have to stop, I would like to stop for a reason
such as James not having time, having to stop for his exams or anything like
that but not to see it vanish due to lack of support. I personally know
from personal experience with a B.B.S. and a few P.D.L.'s that officially
stock POWER how many people get POWER every month and enjoy it. Literally
hundreds! So why do so few contribute, enter the competitions, write
letters, fill in their opinion sheets and basically just give some feedback?
Fine, if you haven't got any spare time at all then there's not much you can
do and I know that myself. I used to contribute quite a lot to POWER but
over the last few months, because of an increased workload I just haven't
had time (sorry James!) but I still enter the odd competition, write the
odd letter and give James some feedback. Most of you don't seem to
realise how important feedback is. A small note saying what you like and
dislike about POWER is just as useful to James as an article (I think).
POWER is one of the very few disk magazines left on the ST scene and it is
one of even fewer that comes out every monthly and it is one of even fewer
than that which is actually worth reading. You don't want to lose it do
you? So support it!
My best regards to the STOSSER crew - I was never in contact with you or
even really got to read your magazine but any ST enthusiasts are decent
people so sorry about your mag and good luck with anything else you may take
on in the future. Stay ST!
I know that letters similar to this one are always appearing everywhere but
I really needed to get that off of my chest and it really needs to be taken
note of. James isn't running a business by producing POWER disk magazine.
As soon as he gets fed up, he'll abandon it so give him a reason not to do
that!
From Peter Shilling
P.S. I hope I didn't speak on your behalf too much James!
POWER REPLIES:
A point raised by so many so often, including myself but no one ever seems
to take any notice. Even just before the demise of STOSSER they put out a
large plea article which nobody took any notice of. Like Peter said, I
don't get any financial benefit from running POWER, I do it as a hobby and
for fun but as soon as it stops being fun, it is no longer a hobby which
means it is a hardship which I don't have to be doing. Please support
POWER and the general ST scene. It's one hell of a scene and it's worth
keeping.
Thanks for your points Peter...You just got your letter here in time for
publication in this issue.
