Internationally known for his devotion to the ATARI Falcon(!), Richard Davey
is the owner of the first, and only, ATARI approved Falcon Owners
Group. Running F.O.G. (UK) along side producing a monthly disk magazine
aimed at Falcon Owners, Richard is also actively involved in The Chameleon
B.B.S. with a special F.O.G. section.
We now have an exclusive interview with this Falcon maniac so here we
go...
HELLO!
Hiya!
WHAT WAS IT THAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO START OFF THE FALCON OWNERS GROUP (FOG)?
Excitement I guess, the Falcon is a little more than an upgraded
ST and it gave me the chance to be in on something big and new right
from the beginning. Having obtained my Falcon I knew instantly there
would be need for a magazine and P.D. - so I started FOG. It would
appear I was right!
WHEN DID F.O.G. FIRST START UP?
Hitch a lift in a time machine back to the heady days of Feb' 1993 when
the Jaguar was but a cub and the Falcon a reviewers dream. I contacted
Atari UK, they wrote back, I wrote back, they replied and it went on
from there. They were a great help in those early months I can tell
you.
IS THIS WHAT YOU THOUGHT YOU'D BE DOING TEN YEARS AGO?
10 years ago I owned a Spectrum +3 and a fatal combination of Target
Renegade and Operation Wolf ruled my computing life. When I first saw
the ST I fell in love with it and knew there was something special, I
couldn't put my finger on it but I have never looked back.
ARE YOU GLAD THAT YOU STARTED UP F.O.G.?
Well someone somewhere had to start a Falcon club, I am pleased it was
me who pioneered the idea along with Faucontact in France and FIX in
London. It has bought a lot of great people into contact with me, I
have seen lots of superb software and _most_ of the time it's been damn
fun! Yes, sure I am glad I started it - especially with the way things
are going now.
HAVE YOU EVER REGRETTED IT?
To say no would be a lie. When you reach the NEXT issue of your
magazine only to find your plea to the readers for articles has fallen
on deaf ears it can be VERY disheartening to say the least. Still
perhaps they will learn over time? Then again...
WHAT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN WITH F.O.G.?
The one thing I wanted to see more than anything was a disk magazine
with a special Falcon-only shell. This is already happening though, our
new shell can display 256 colour animations, play soundtracker music on
interrupt, show GIF and TARGA files, have multiple text windows open at
one time, works with NVDI, uses Speedo fonts, etc... etc... It's
probably the single most piece of programming I am proud of. Now I
have got the shell installed I guess the next thing I want to see
happen is for the readers to write some articles! Oh, sorry -
shouldn't that have come under the question 'WHAT DO YOU DREAM ABOUT?'.
WHAT WOULD YOU LEAST LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN WITH F.O.G.?
To see it fold because Atari stop making Falcon's. I see that as being
the only REAL thing that could kill it.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO START UP A B.B.S.?
I don't actually run my own BBS, I have two great friends who live
close to me who run a BBS called The Chameleon. I was playing with a
modem, talked to the sysops and they said they could open a FOG section
on the BBS - it kinda went from there. Call them :-) (0454 881095)
WHAT HAVE YOU GAINED OUT OF STARTING UP F.O.G. AND YOUR B.B.S.?
I would like to say money, masses of software and friends.
But I would be lying. So instead I'll say masses of software and some
great friends in the Atari world. Also a real sense of achievement
which will be very apparent in the next issue of my disk-mag because I
am so proud of it.
DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE LOST OUT IN ANY WAY BY STARTING UP THESE SERVICES?
I have lost out by not doing it commercially, that's for sure. But I
have some great friends both to do with FOG and just _normal_ friends,
I go out a lot and lead a generally happy life. FOG has caused me
enough problems, that is for sure. But on the whole it has helped to
make my computing life even more enjoyable. I lose time and sleep,
but if I was running FOG or not I would probably be doing something to
waste it anyway!
HOW LONG DO YOU INTEND TO RUN THEM FOR - DO YOU SEE IT ENDING IN THE NEAR
FUTURE?
Not at all, the future is very bright for both myself and FOG. With
Silica Shops new Falcon advertising binge soon, the reduction in price
(some £150 discount on all models) and the popularity of the Jaguar
which can only help things I am feeling very confident that I have
invested in a computer with a future.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT RUNNING A USER GROUP?
I was the first! I run the worlds first Falcon user group and I also
have official recognition and support from Atari UK - it kinda gives me
a buzz to think that! I could go on about how I help out the Falcon
owners and do a good deed, but as the majority of them never even
contact me (not even with a 'thanks' or suggestions for improvement) I
can't really claim that.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE LEAST ABOUT RUNNING A USER GROUP?
Isolation. (You know what I mean aye James?!)(Sure do! - POWER)
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING INVOLVED IN A B.B.S.?
On behalf of Maz (our esteemed Sysop) I guess it is knowing about
everything first, getting all the new software first and meeting some
weird and wonderful people on-line.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE LEAST ABOUT BEING INVOLVED IN A B.B.S.?
Maz: The phone bill! and file troughers (people who log-on, download
and then log off with no uploads)
WHAT ELSE DO YOU LIKE TO DO ON YOUR ATARI APART FROM RUNNING YOUR OWNERS
GROUP?
At the moment it has to be a combination of programming the new shell,
drawing some killer graphics for the magazine and playing Steel Talons.
Oh I also like reading disk-mags (and POWER is no exception!)
WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON THE JAGUAR CONSOLE - DO YOU THINK THAT IF IT DOES
WELL, ATARI WILL LEAVE THE COMPUTING SCENE AND MOVE INTO THE CONSOLE
MARKET?
A lot of people have asked me this one and I think the answer is
staring them in the face most the time. Put yourself in Atari's shoes,
they have a killer console that IS doing well both state side and here,
the problem is quantity but I am sure they will sort things out by
Christmas. Now this is putting much needed capital back into Atari
Corp who will in turn dish this out to certain parts of the
establishment. Atari have dropped the ST and STE (and TT I believe)
but that is almost understandable. But they have invested thousands
and thousands of pounds into the Falcon - even Atari are not stupid
enough to let this go to waste. With a new sub-£400 price and new
software I think you will find a new surge of involvement in the
computing scene rather than dropping it altogether. There is of course
the chance of a Jaguar computer... but this is Atari we are talking
about here so don't hold your breath.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE RUMOURS OF A FALCON 040 - ARE THEY TRUE AND DO
YOU THINK IT WILL EVER ACTUALLY HAPPEN?
I don't think it needs to happen, you see the problem with the Falcon
is that it's not a 32-bit machine like the adverts proclaim. It has a
big problem when it comes to data transfer thus meaning that in reality
is only a 16-bit machine. There are plenty of accelerator boards and
add-on's that will make your Falcon shift it along like nothing on
Earth though. But as for an 040, not a chance. Not in this decade
anyway, a 040 upgrade chip is a possibility though, a new computer isn't.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ATARI GOT WRONG WITH THE FALCON?
The advertising - it was bollocks! Plus they spouted plenty of claims
about software that turned vapourware - a typical and disturbing Atari
trend.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ATARI GOT RIGHT WITH THE FALCON?
The hardware - for all its faults it's a bloody great machine.
DO YOU THINK THAT THE FALCON IS JUST AN ATARI MADE P.C.?
No, it's more of an Apple Mac clone. PC's don't have SCSI-II interfaces
as standard, Mac's do, they don't usually have 2.5" IDE slots, Mac's
do. They certainly don't have DSP's - a lot of Mac's do. They don't
have a GUI installed as standard - Mac's do!
The Falcon is remarkably expandable for very small amounts of money.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO CHANGE ABOUT YOUR FALCON IF ANYTHING?
I want to put it in a tower case and add a 1 Gig hard drive and CD-Rom
to it. Space is more important than speed, because my current set-up
runs fast enough for me.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO CHANGE ABOUT YOUR INVOLVEMENT IN THE FALCON SCENE IF
ANYTHING?
I want to start the first ever Falcon Licenceware scheme.
(programmers contact me!)
WHAT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO SEE APPEAR ON YOUR B.B.S.?
An on-line Atari magazine and perhaps a Usenet feed (from the Internet)
WHO IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE IN YOUR USER GROUP AND WHY?
Douglas Little - because he's a bloody genius!
WHO IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU LEAST LIKE TO HAVE IN YOUR USER GROUP AND WHY?
Anyone who complains more about their Falcon than they use it.
WHAT MADE YOU START UP A DISK MAGAZINE?
Money. Printing my magazine was costing hundreds each issue, digital
seemed the obvious move. Besides it's monthly now and I for one
couldn't manage it printed monthly.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT RUNNING A DISK MAG?
Flexibility to bring whatever the hell I want to the readers without
them complaining it was a waste of space because I can fit it alongside
other important things. Oh yeah and the graphics!
WHAT DO YOU LEAST LIKE ABOUT RUNNING A DISK MAG?
It's time consuming and you need a LOT of articles to make it look
good.
HAS RUNNING YOUR OWN DISK MAG LIVED UP TO YOUR EXPECTATIONS?
Come back to me in a year's time with this one...!
WHAT DO YOU FIND HARDEST ABOUT RUNNING A DISK MAG?
Copying 100-200 high density disks each month. That sucks!
WHAT DO YOU THINK FALCON OWNERS HAVE THAT P.C. OWNERS DON'T?
Style.
WHAT DO YOU THINK P.C. OWNERS HAVE THAT FALCON OWNERS DON'T?
DOS - and thank God we don't!
AND NOW, A QUESTION JUST TO KEEP THOSE SUPER DEMO CODERS HAPPY; WHAT IS YOUR
FAVOURITE PIZZA TOPPING?
Chedder Cheese and curried fruit chutney with a nice sine wave or shade
bob thrown in for good measure.
AT PRESENT, WHAT PROGRAM DO YOU THINK DOES THE FALCON MOST JUSTICE?
The new range of APEX Media software - Expose and the like. They are
mind blowing, really mind blowing. (Kinda wallet blowing too!).
DO YOU THINK THE FULL POTENTIAL OF THE FALCON HAS BEEN REACHED YET AND IF
NOT, WHY NOT?
Time after time I see things on my ST that proves it's potential hasn't
been reached yet - so as for a baby like the Falcon... not a chance!
WHAT MADE YOU GET A FALCON?
A combination of a birthday, a job and a nice discount from Atari.
Oh and it's a mother of a machine.
HOW LONG HAD YOU HAD YOUR FALCON BEFORE STARTING UP F.O.G.?
I started FOG before I got my Falcon, I knew there was ground work to
be done and it enabled me to get right into the swing of things as soon
as my Falcon arrived.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO GET F.O.G. PROPERLY ESTABLISHED?
A good few months. You have to wait for the press releases to filter
through into the magazines you see. ST Review was the first.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE FALCON P.D. SCENE?
It never fails to amaze me. The demos are of the highest quality you
could ever dream of, the utilities are simply the best on the Atari and
even the games are slowly coming up to pace.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE FALCON COMMERCIAL SCENE?
Better than most people give it credit for! There is some amazing
software out there, the problem is that software houses think that
because we can afford to buy a Falcon we can also afford to pay stupid
prices for their software (take note 16/32).
DO YOU THINK THAT THE FALCON HAS BEEN WASTED DUE TO THE LACK OF COMMERCIAL
SUPPORT?
I don't think there has been lack of commercial support, so no.
DO YOU SEE ATARI SURVIVING INTO THE 21ST CENTURY?
I see Atari ruling the 21st Century, but then I always was an optimist!
WHAT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO DO WITH SAM TRAIMEL (ER, NO FUNNY BUSINESS
OKAY!)?
Pat him on the back, because for all his bloody awful decisions if it
hadn't been for him there would have been NO ST, NO STE and NO FALCON.
We owe him.
WHO FROM THE ST\FALCON SCENE DO YOU THINK WOULD BE GOOD AT RUNNING ATARI?
Me :-) (that's my honest opinion too!)
WHAT'S THE BEST THING ABOUT HAVING A FALCON IN YOUR OPINION?
Knowing I have more potential power under my finger tips waiting to be
unleashed with each new killer application that comes along, than any
other computer.
WHAT'S THE WORST THING ABOUT HAVING A FALCON?
The price puts people off joining me in owning one.
DO YOU THINK THE FALCON WILL END UP GOING THE SAME WAY AS THE ST(E) IS
NOW BEFORE ITS TIME?
Not at all, it's too different and exciting for that.
APART FROM COMPUTING, WHAT OTHER HOBBIES DO YOU HAVE?
I enjoy reading a lot. My favourite magazine is Wired (as FOG readers
will know!) the mix of technology and culture is amazing and the layout
design puts all Future Publishing efforts to shame. In fact, the
magazine The Edge is based on Wired a lot. I also read books, plenty
of them - I am an avid horror and sci-fi reader, but I love classics
like Shakespeare and Fitzgerald. I am well into the Star Trek series
Deep Space Nine, it's simply amazing, I can't stand the original series
or The Next Generation (but Voyager looks promising) but DS9 is quite
stunning, the actors and the charisma they hold. Nana Visitor (Major
Kira Nerys) is my ideal woman! I go to the movies a lot, the most
recent film I saw was The Crow with Brandon Lee - wow that was great!
I also spend a lot of time on the Internet - on international chat
programs and MUD's, it's almost a way of life for me now, you can't
compare it to anything, its wild. I also do a lot of walking (hill
walking too) but mainly when at university because I am on the edge of
the Peak district. When at Uni' you can often find me in the local
Comedy Club or Union bars or at the Cult T.V. meetings, it's a nice place
to be! Oh yeah I also do a lot of fishing too with my Dad, it's great
fun - more than most people imagine. Music is wonderful too, I listen
to lots and lots of it. Finally, well my pen pals take up a bit of
time too. Then my other big love in life is Manga films and Anime,
they are so good and provide a real step away from this disturbing
world we live in (my favourites are Akira, Venus Wars, BubbleGum Crisis
and Wicked City). I feel I have a nice life.
FAVE FOOD:
Donar meat in a pitta bread with salad, lemon sauce, chilli's and a few
chips. That's my fave fast food. For more sensible stuff it has to be a
nice thick beef stew with dumplings you could use for pollyfiller!
FAVE DRINK:
Three Fruit Crush (from Safeway shops) and Guiness (I envy Rutger
sometimes!)
FAVE MUSIC:
Oh boy where do I start? I like industrial stuff and grunge. The
Future Sound of London (Lifeforms is amazing), Nine Inch Nails (Closer
is my fave track on the new album), Machines of Loving Grace, Helmet,
Pantera, Faith No More, Nirvana, The Cure, Red Hot Chilli Peppers,
Stone Temple Pilots (sometimes), Sepultura (in short bursts) and plenty
of others like the Aphex Twins, Reload, Orb and L7.
FAVE T.V. SERIES\PROGRAM:
Non-Sky has to be Inspector Morse, that was superb! Alas no more
though. So my current favourite is PASSENGERS - Friday night on
Channel 4 about 11:20pm ish. It's great.
Sky - Deep Space Nine (of course!)
FAVE FILM:
Fave film ever has to be ALIENS. Infact the Alien trilogy is quite
amazing, other good films I recommend include Lawnmower Man, Ground Hog
Day (a beautiful film), The Crow and anything by John Woo (Hard Target)
Oh, the Tetsuo films are brilliant too and anything Manga-Anime related.
TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT YOURSELF:
I am 19 years old and attend Staffordshire University where I am doing
a Business and Information Technology course, I have passed my first
year with flying colours and am back in October for the second. I am
about 5"11 tall, have dark brown hair that grows so wild sometimes (I
am dying it black when I go back to uni). I have a great and often
sick sense of humour, a deep love of anything historical or classical
(great art, buildings, books, etc.), I can't drive (yet) but I have
every faith in the public transport! I enjoy making people laugh, I
have two beautiful sisters, I love children and babies (no, not to eat)
and I think I may become a computer teacher one-day, but I'm not
training for it (yet). I like talking on the phone to lots of people
and am a generally a nice guy to know (makes ya sick huh?). Oh I am
usually skint too.
THANKS FOR THAT RICH, NOW FEEL FREE TO ADVERTISE AS MUCH AS YOU WANT BELOW:
