THE LATEST NEWS ON SATELLITE TELEVISION
from Andy Morgan of Nebula Entertainment
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sky subscriptions up again!
Sky have sent letters to all their present subscribers informing them of the
price rises. From the 1st October, exactly £3.00 sterling will be added to
each monthly subscription fee. Viewers that have payed their fees a year
in advance will not be affected until that year runs out.
Comment:
After the recent decision by Sky to charge new subscribers a £10 connection
fee, and now a big £3.00 jump in monthly subscription fees in my opinion,Sky
Television is getting too greedy!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sky channels grow!
I have been informed that also in October, 4 NEW channels will be added to
the ever growing Sky network.
VH1 ( Video Hits One ) - Runs 24 hours a day,7 days a week.
TLC ( The Learning Channel ) - 9am to 4pm daily.
Sky Travel Channel - 12pm to 12am daily.
Romance Channel - 8am to 12 noon.Monday to Friday.
** A BIG thankyou to Martin Cubitt for supplying this information **
Comment:
Its nice to have a bigger choice of channels, but this still dosen't really
justify the aforementioned subs increase. Most viewers would rather pay
for just the channels they watch instead of having to subsidise the few
channels that are not worth switching your telly on for. (UK Living?!)

Goodbye MTV. Hello Viva!!
Their are signs that very soon, MTV will scramble and become a fully-fledged
member of the Multi-channels package. To all the viewers that do not
subscribe to any of Sky, this may be a blow. However, all is not lost! As
there is a very good German alternative. Viva Television is a music channel
that can boast most of the same music as MTV, and it's FREE!
The bad news is that Viva is transmitted via the Eutelsat II F1 satellite at
13 degrees east. Astra (Which Sky is on) is at 19 degrees east. To be able
to receive Viva, plus a number of English/Non-English channels, you could
move your dish very slightly to the right, or for a wad of cash, motorize
your system.
OR you could read next months article on cheaper ways of receiving other
satellites transmissions.

RTL4 & RTL5 Combined Decoder
In the last issue, I talked about an RTL4 decoder possibly decoding RTL5 as
well. Well, it looks like you need a slightly more expensive combined unit.
The price of the RTL4 decoder is still £79. While the new RTL4 & 5 decoder
is £100.
Anybody interested in purchasing either of them can contact Mid-Sat on

** Pirate Cards Special **
The majority of satellite enthusiasts know about Pirate cards, but for those
of you wondering what 'cards with pictures of Pirates on' has to do with
satellite, here's a brief description.
A 'Pirate card' is an unofficially produced piece of circuitry that allows
the viewer to access scrambled transmissions from satellite. It is called a
card because of the thin rectangular shape of the board. The idea being that
it conveniently slots into a Videocrypt decoder.
Over the past few years, many Pirate cards have surfaced in magazines and
the black market. The following is a list of some satellite channels which
the cards have been produced for:
1. Filmnet ( D2Mac Decoder needed as well. £150-£300. )
2. TV1000 ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,,
3. TV3 ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,,
4. Filmmax ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,,
5. Cine Cinemas ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,,
6. Canal+ ( Secam 2 Pal transcoder needed. £125. )
7. Cine Cinefil ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,,
8. The Adult Channel
9. Red Hot Dutch ( Channel now defunct )
10. The Sky Channels
11. Premiere
12. Teleclub
Quite a few!
Until recently, the most common Pirate card in the U.K was the Sky Pirate
card. Prices ranged from around £30 to £80 depending on where you bought it.
Some of the more expensive cards also allowed you to watch the soft porn
Adult Channel as well. This was easily done as both Television companies used
the same decoding software in the official cards. Called 'Videocrypt', the
software was supposed to be unhackable but soon after it was introduced, it
was hacked.
Although these Pirate cards are illegal in the U.K, they have become very
popular. The main reason being the high cost of subscriptions to the T.V.
companies.
As an example, subscribing to all of the Sky channels - that's Movies,Sports
and the Multi channels - would 'previously' cost you around £240 a year. Now
you get offered a Pirate card that will unscramble all of these channels
for, say, £50. Which would you choose? (I'm not saying you should go for
the cheaper option!).
Most Pirate cards have a limited life span. Companies like Sky send out new
cards to their customers at least once a year. When this happens, most Pirate
cards cease to function (which is Sky's intention). However, the suppliers
of the Pirate cards usually offer a quick upgrading service for a very small
amount of cash.
For those of you wishing a Pirate card, all I can say is write to some of
the 'suspect' German adverts in, say, the What Satellite magazine.I did this
a few months ago and was sent details of numerous different cards that was
available. Certain cards are not illegal in Germany so that's why most of
them originate from there.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE MENTIONED 'SKY PIRATE CARDS' ARE ILLEGAL IN THE
UNITED KINGDOM, AND I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYONE BEING CAUGHT
USING ONE.
That's all for this month.
Anyone wishing to write to me regarding Pirate cards or any other Satellite
related subject are most welcome. I will answer every letter.

satellites without moving your dish!
