DONKEY ISLAND
REVIEWED BY
STEPHEN WILSON
I have had the opportunity to see the preview of DONKEY ISLAND after writing to
the author Ed Cleveland, who may i add replied to me without delay.
Before i review the game i must clear something up on behalf of the author.
DONKEY ISLAND is not the sequel to THE SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND.It lends itself
more to the sequel to the ST classic 'DOG ISLAND' any resemblence to the
original is purely co-incidental.
This adventure was however inspired by the fact that S.O.M.I.2 was never
released on the ST.
I hope this sets the record straight Ed
On with the review
The plot to this adventure is you have to find out what happened to the sequel
to Dog Island, your objective is to find the lost\missing game.
I think you will find that you already have the game you are looking for,a
slight case of not being able to see the wood for the trees.
The game when completed will have a large amount of locations and sampled
sound, with interaction with other characters you meet. All action is via the
up\down,left and right arrows and the numbers on the keypad.
The adventure starts with Fred (the main character) standing in the hallway of
his home, the graphics have been well drawn and the goldfish sprite swims very
smoothly, there are several rooms to visit in the house,Objects you need are in
sight, you must pick the key up to go outside. You use the lift to get
downstairs, outside you can have a bit of a look around, the fountain in the
garden is mighty impressive. You will also need the town map to find your way
around, only a few of the locations were accessable in this preview, but from
what i saw from my little sojourn is anything to go by this game will be a
success.
Things i found positive about this offering are well drawn graphics, superb
sprites, honest the fountain is something else, screen redraws are
quick, buildings leave you in no doubt about what they are.
Things that detracted from the game was the keypad, although it was a bit
cumbersome at first and i had to take my eyes off the screen to check i was
pressing the correct key i soon got used to it.
My rating on this game from what i have seen so far is 72% this could have been
higher but as i have not heard the sampled sound or seen all the locations i
feel this to be an honest assessment so far.
Ed tells me that the game will be completed around the end of july and there
will be a demo version placed on Diskmagazines and in pds.The game is shareware
grab a copy of the demo when it is available, you won't be dissapointed.
