DTP + Graphics CD
Review by Dave.
Due to a serious dosh shortage I've had to postpone buying this CD for a
month or so, the recent Atari shows wiped me out...and that was on the
saturday, still, with my money saved I finally waved away the moths and got
together enough dosh to buy the new Floppyshop DTP + Graphics CD, with those
words, let's not take a look and see what's hiding beneath the glossy exterior
coating....
At first glance....
The usual plot on the doormat hailed it was time to power up my CD ROM for
t'was the day I'd waited for, upon opening the oversized jiffy I found a great
looking coverpic mounted on an even nicer looking green CD with matching cover
picture, I was supprised that the CD label ws just that, a Label, all my
previous experiances with CD's has seen me with etched on piccies ect but
then, I've very few CD's, music or ROM wise so I guess I've learned something
new.
What was inside, well, aside from the disc itself thre is also a neat little
inlay card that whilst being a bonus is painfully inadequate for the mamoth
task of cataloguing even a fraction of the programs on the disc.
On the Disc....
Er, how long have you got?.....it's blummin stuffed, to even hint at what's
on the disk is a momentous undertaking, instead I'll simply try and remember
as much as I can after my almost 3 solid hours of wading through it all.
Piccies, this was my main reason for purchasing the CD in the first place, a
good hour or so was spent looking at all the .PC1/.TNY/.NEO pics alone
(NeoDesk 4 displayes them via a double click), I lost count after the first
hunded or so, this is not to mention all the other formats such as
.SPU/.SPC/.GIF/.IMG.....you get the idea.
The one bad point with the pics was that a few of them are duplicates of
other formats, i. e. I found a few instances where only the file extension was
different and even on occasion the same pic but with a different filename
however, there are hundreds of pics to wade through so the odd duplicate is
tolerable.
Originally I intended to use a host of the piccies for ST+ however since the
new menu change I've no need so it's just as well there is so many other
programs on the Disc, ranging from DTP obviously though to fonts, printer
drivers, spoolers and the like.
It was clear that Steve and his fellow compilers had a huge task ahead of
them, in fact the preliminary documentation stated that they still had a
momentous amount of space even after plonking on what they first planned.
To say that they filled out the disk is an acurate piece of wording however,
to say they padded it isn't, every extra piece of software was once more
carefully chosen. The acclaimed Geneology program, Family roots (version 1) is
on te disc, not just a demo, though there are loads of them to choose from,
but the ful, unrestricted version, also on the Disc come a few more complete
'giveaways' exclusive to Floppyshop including DEGASART by Markotek, the full
version of the highly acclaimed three part computer graphics tutorial,
normally sold separately for £5 or more. X-Lator by Gair Shields. The full
registered version of this excellent German to English translation program. ,
the aforementioned FAMILY ROOTS I and also EDITH PROFESSIONAL. A Floppyshop
exclusive, the full version of Edith Professional. Edith is a very highly
specified text editor from Germany.
Where is it then...?
Finding your way around any CD can be a nightmare! With this in mind, you'll
find a folder on the disc entitled DIRECTOR.Y inside the _CATALOG folder. This
contains versions of the ST/STe and TT/Falcon catalogue programs along with
the appropriate text files describing the contents of the DTP + Graphics CD.
In addition you will find a README.1ST file in the main folders which mentions
what type of software you should expect to find in the folder. Finally there's
a DIR. TXT file in the same location showing the entire directory structure
for the relevant folder.
This essentially makes browsing for a specific set of files or programs a
breeze, I didn't have to look far to find what I initially wanted, the rest
will take me hours to browse, even with the easy-find catalogues.
Pagestream Fonts, Calamus Fonts, even art package fonts are included, this is
totally a DTP enthusiasts dream. Demo's, PD and shareware are all catered for
and all for an amazing 35 UKP.
How does it fare then, Dave?....

CONTENT - 93% - Blummin loads mate...
EASE OF USE - 76% - Easy to use index with custom TOMS displayer, functional
if slightly uninspiring.
