Maggie 23
Review by Dave.
Maggie... the very name inspires the question of 'how long can they keep this
up?', well, suffice to say there's life in the old girl yet...quite a lot of
life actually.
Let's 'ave a look guv'nor... :)
Unlike another zine (reviewed this issue) the Maggie team have their own
custom intro, a nice little affair that wait's patiently for a keypress, once
done your off to... the GEM desktop...
Maggie possesses no intro, a god send to some, a let down for others, I'm the
latter having seen just what quality intro's the Maggie team can produce,
nevertheless, issue 23 weighs in with a mighty-huge-whopping great 800+k of
text for you to wade through.
Oil slick smooth comes the shell, although relatively a new one Mr.Tat is
already looking at improving it or even completely coding a new one again from
scratch, reader opinions are requested.
It's sometimes hard to review a zine that's so well respected, often the
reviewer is in 'awe' of the zine or in total fear for upsetting folk by saying
the wrong word, thankfully, neither of these apply here, Maggie is well
respected in Atari circles and with every reason, whilst maybe not as visually
pleasing as some the Maggie team concentrate heavily on the little details
that a lot of other diskzines forget (ST+ included).
The files range from interviews to reviews, Jody 'I'm normal, honest'' Smith
makes a guest (soon to become regular) appearance, as does our (ex???) music
editor Nev wilson.
The usual mix of wit and serious banter makes Maggie the daddie of the
diskmags, this issue is by no means an exception, as I mentioned earlier
there's well over 800k of text, all scrumpled up into one, 550k odd linkfile.
As ever the text displayer is the same, blisteringly 'how can you read that
fast' displayer Maggie's that Maggie's been using since at least issue 18,
it's stood the test of time well and many, many people still swear by it (tho'
some at it)...<g>...
Articles by CiH, Feliece and the rest of the crew make up some of the figures
but articles from readers help along the numbers and the diversity, ranging
from Atari show reports to general wibbles, game reviews to hardware help
issue 23 looks as good as ever, plenty to keep you busy in between the months
until issue 24 (Bi-Monthly, Chris?...:))
In all another excellent issue, there's so much to read I couldn't possibly
start ranting about the odd one... well, there is of course the Spice Girls
guide to Atari computers ect. that bears a mention.
And.....
INTRO - 0-100% - There isn't one, great if you hate 'em, tuff if
you don't...
SHELL - 81% - Possibly about to undergo another change.
ARTICLE [count] - 94% - There's 'kin loads of the things Guv'.
ARTICLE [content] - 81% - The Maggie standard has paved the way for others to
imitate...but never equalled
EXTRA FEATURES - 90% - On-line? help, at the click of a button.
1st Word+ text files, very smart.
OVERALL - 89% - It's Maggie, nuff said.. :)
