Picture Hunter v1.4 (L)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What is Picture Hunter ? Well, what it
does is simply to load itself into
memory and then allow other programs
(games, demos, utilities etc. to load
AFTER it.
Once another program has loaded it is
possible to FREEZE the action by
pressing the RESET button on the back
of your ST/STE ! By moving around
inside the computer's memory it is now
possible to locate the image you
originally froze so that Picture
Hunter can save it to disk as a Degas
low rez picture.
This version of Picture Hunter only
works in LOW resolution.
Instructions
~~~~~~~~~~~~
1/ Create a WORK disk by following the
instructions in the SET_UP.DOC and
then carry on from 2/ below to use
your WORK disk.
2/ Switch off your computer for 10
seconds to completely clear the
memory.
3/ Insert the Picture Hunter disk and
switch on. You will see a message
saying "Picture Hunter Is Not In The
Memory" and a few seconds after that a
menu will appear.
4/ Once the menu has appeared, Picture
Hunter has successfully loaded into
memory and you can now remove the disk
and insert the disk containing the
program from which you wish to "grab"
screenshots.
5/ There are 5 options listed in the
menu which I will now explain.
1) "Load From Boot". Select this if
the disk you wish to access normally
runs by reading the BOOT sector. If
you don't know if it does or doesn't
then don't worry ! Just try it and if
Picture Hunter doesn't find an
executable boot sector then it will
tell you and you can return to the
main menu.
2) "Load From Auto". Select this if
the program runs from an AUTO folder.
Again, if you aren't sure then select
the option as before and follow the
on-screen instructions.
3) "Go To Desktop". Select this if
you normally have to double-click on
the program from the desktop to run
it.
4) "Test Boot Sector". Tells you
whether or not the disk contains the
Picture Hunter Boot Sector.
5) "Insert Picture Hunter Boot
Sector". Handy option if you want to
immunize your disks.
Okay, assuming you've managed to
execute the program you were
interested in then the fun can begin !
Once the program is up-and-running
you can attempt to grab a screen by
pressing the RESET button on the back
of your computer. Now, when you do
this one of two things will happen.
a) The program itself has "erased the
RESET-VECTOR" which means that Picture
Hunter will do absolutely nothing !!
This program CANNOT have screenshots
taken from it. Sorry !!!!!!
b) The screen will break up and freeze
to display lots of multicoloured lines
and general interference.
If b) happens then you're in business!
If you now use the arrow keys to move
the screen around you will eventually
find (hopefully) the image that was
displayed just as you pressed the
reset button (I found that pressing
the down arrow and then the left/right
arrows is generally best). Line this
up so that it fills the screen neatly
(without any "noise" around the edges)
and then swap the program disk for the
(WORK) Picture Hunter disk and then
press "Space".
The screen will clear and you will
then be asked whether or not you want
to save the picture (that was
displayed BEFORE you pressed
"Space" !!). Select either yes or no.
If "Yes", then the picture will be
saved to disk as PICTURE0.PI1 (if it's
the FIRST picture saved). If "No" then
the Picture Hunter main menu will
appear for you to reload the original
program as in 5/ above.
Once your picture is on disk you can
view it using Picswitch in the
PICTURES folder on the master Picture
Hunter disk or use SPX.PRG which is an
excellent multi-format picture
sideshow program.
NOTE: If you switch off your ST/E
after having saved some pictures to
your Picture Hunter WORK disk, and
then use it later on, you will have to
rename the pictures you originally
saved otherwise they will be
overwritten !! P.H. automatically
saves the first picture from any new
session as PICTURE0.PI1.
Enjoy !!!!!
Please note that Picture Hunter will
not be able to save images from ALL
programs. Many games or demos
"interfere" with the RESET-VECTOR
which renders P.H. useless !!! Also
remember that it is illegal to "grab"
images from within COMMERCIAL
software. Use this program ONLY for
the purpose of saving images from
Public Domain software.
