  24. I have a 1040st that has recently developed problems playing digitized
  25. sound. It will play ordinary game sounds ok, but the streplay demo
  26. sounds scratchy and low. Music Studio also has problems. I want to fix
  27. this myself so what chip should I replace? I can get a sound chip, but
  28. I wanted to check if I'm looking at the right culprit. Thanks...

  55. In response to the above Ref, I think that there still a relatively large
  56. market for Pit's Shareware Aladin. For instant at the School of Architecture,
  57. National University of Singapore, I am teaching computer graphics course to
  58. the 1st Year (98 Students) and 4th year Computer Electives (15 Students) each
  59. year. One of the program I demonstrate in the classes is SCHEMA by Mark Van
  60. Norman (I bought from Harvard Graduate School of Design). Since we have only
  61. 5 ALadin (Version 1.3e) and 1 Magic Sac (Version 6.1) for student to use.
  62. The shareware will be inexpensive enough for each student to buy one for their
  63. own use.  There are 20 Atari 520STs with 1MB EZ RAM upgraded and 6 Mega 4s for
  64. these 2 courses. I myself own 1 each of MagicSac 6.1, Spectre 128, Spectre GCR
  65. and Aladin 1.3e. Forget to mention that SCHEMA is a Mac 3D Modeling Prg selling
  66. to the Harvard's students at US$20.Please release your shareware quick,Regard.

  76. I have changed the switch for my mouse. I bought 2 switches for about $0.25
  77. each from a local electronic part dealer. Just looking for the one that has
  78. 4 pins and selecting the one that has softest action. Check it contact assign-
  79. ment with Ohm meter before replacement as not all of them have the same contact
  80. as the Atari mouse switch. I have to bend up 1 pin (not connect) and soldered
  81. only 3 pins to the pc board. It may require some filing of the button to adjust
  82. it to the correct height.  Mac using micro switch for its mouse. I also found
  83. suitable size micro switch that could be used for Atari mouse but you will have
  84.  to cut the stems underneath the mouse buttons. I am still not keen to do that
  85. yet. Micro switch is much higher than the square button type switchs used in
  86. the original Atari mouse. Althogh it has 4 pins connects to pc board but it is
  87. only on/off actions therefore the 2 pin Micro switch will work. Sujarittanonta

  141. I would like to ask you about Appletalk support. I don't need it personally
  142. but I was in Computer Works last Saturday when a young woman came in looking
  143. for a STacy. It seems that she wants to buy a STacy Spectre-GCR to take to
  144. work. she has all kinds of Macs at work and wants to have a laptop/portable
  145. Mac for use at her home. Hence, she wanted to buy  a STacy. When Jeff (the
  146. store manager) demoed your Spectre (1.9f I believe) she was sold. Unfortunately,
  147. CW didn't have any STacys or Spectre-GCRs in stock ( :-) ), so she left
  148. empty handed. I tried to sell her on a 1040ST with a Spectre but she really
  149.  wanted
  150. a STacy Spectre-GCR.

  152. Anyway, the gist is that she wanted to be able to hook up the STacy to the
  153. Appletalk network at her job. Jeff said that you couldn't do that.
  154.  
  155. So, it would be a big asset if you could figure out how to add Attletalk to
  156. Spectre-GCR by the time the STacys are available. Heck, I might even buy one
  157. if you could get Appletalk to work (we have Macs all over the place at work!).

  181. The suggestion was made that instead of using a cartridge, code that works
  182. like the MAC ROMs but doesn't violate Apple's copyright could be used. This
  183. is a great idea. No one has done it yet, which is one of the reasons why no
  184. Apple clones (other than STs :-) exist yet.

  186. It is a technical difficulty, or a legal one? How does Phoenix et al. get
  187. away with IBM clone ROMs? Licensing? Work-alike?

  212. The clone chips cover only the BIOS part of the OS.  Basically, all that
  213. does is control access to resources (drives, video, etc).  The rest of
  214. the OS is available on disk from Microsoft.
  215.  
  216. The Mac is a different story: not only would you have to re-engineer
  217. the basic stuff, you'd have to create the screen interface, event
  218. management, and all that other stuff.

  220. It's the difference between cloning BIOS and cloning Gemdos, the AES and
  221. VDI.

  235. drives.  One has an old SF 314 with a corner button eject and the other
  236. has a 520STfm.

  238. 1.  What is a reliable and cheap DS drive to buy as a replacement?  Netters
  239.     have mentioned a Toshiba model several times.

  241. 2.  Are there any hardware changes that need to be made?  For example, if

  274. Sounds like it might be the same problem I fixed in Arkaniod (access to
  275. undocumented mouse position memory location).

  293.     Earlier, I posted a message about using DEPICT (I think that is
  294. the name...I'm on the Spectre GCR and can't get to my ST side) to create
  295. PICT files from Degas.PI3 files.
  296.     Here's something else that is pretty slick.  Using SNAPSHOT.TOS, etc.,
  297. take a picture of Dave Small's ABOUT SPECTRE graphic.  Convert this to
  298. a .PICT.  Edit it with a suitable painting program on the Mac side of
  299. your ST so that only the graphic exists.  Now then, use this as a
  300. startup screen via BACKDROP desk accessory.  HEE HEE... funny seeing the
  301. Spectre GCR EMULATOR picture on a Mac.  The Macintosh Representative at
  302. our campus 'demanded' to have one.  He now has it as his startup screen on
  303. his Macs.

  327. other laser printers, even with faster print engines, in certain
  328. situations.  Several people posted articles saying, yes, in real life,
  329. they have seen this.

  331. I can assure you that, running Ultrascript, the SLM804 will beat the pants
  332. of your Panasonic laser printer printing, for example, full page bitmaps.

  334. Why don't you benchmark it in various situations before you shoot your
  335. mouth off? Why can't you include a little disclaimer, "Well, there are
  336. situations where the SLM804 is a lot faster than the Panasonic." Yes,
  337. the Panasonic may be the best printer for you, but not necessarily for
  338. everyone else. They might be very surprised to plug it in and find
  339. that it doesn't print 11 pages per minute, every minute.

  378. Dear netlanders. Many thanks to all of you sending me messages about where and
  379. how to get ZOO. Ok, I received ZOO and while you're reading this, I'll start
  380. trying it out.
  381. But now another question (fascinated by the fast answers): does anybody know
  382. about a new (or: the newest) version of GULAAM? That's an UNIX-like shell
  383. for the ST and I simply *LOVE* it. Filename completion, cmd buffering and the
  384. built-in uEmacs and terminal emulator - just the sort of things I need.
  385. My version (sri, didn't look at the version number - gettin' old...) is abt 2
  386. years old and throws BOMBs when I use the MEM command (BTW: thank you, ATARI,
  387. for the nice built-in symbolic debugger. It knows only one symbol (BOMB), but
  388. that's a very clear way to show a bug, hehehe).
  389. If anybody happens to know about a new souped-up version of GULAAM, please
  390. drop me a few lines.
