- COMPUTER CHEF DOCUMENTATION -
Computer Chef is largely self documenting. So little will be covered here.
With Computer Chef you can search recipe files by ingredient, keywords,
or title; creating a working list of recipes. You can add to this list or
prune it down. In this way, you can put together a list of recipes for an
entire meal! Once you've found a recipe you like, you can revise it for
different amounts, write it out as a file, or print it.
In order to use Computer Chef you need to have the file CHEF.COM and
CHEFUNIT.TBL on the same drive/user. You can keep the recipe files on another
disk (same user) if you wish. There is a menu option to search another disk
for recipes.
Of course, one of the nicest things about this program is it's ability to
increase the number of recipes. Recipe files are simply created with your
favorite text editor. Here's how it works:
General Info:
-------------
1. Max ingredients allowed = 40
2. Max text allowed = 3000 characters
(a) Call up location with [c/x=],, look at"length"for total.
3. The Word 'KEY WORDS:' must be in UPERCASE.
4. Recipe files on disk must be named [RECIPES.1 , RECIPES.2 etc.]
5. Layout of recipes:
1. Initial Comment (optional)
2. Title.
3. Ingredients.
4. Instructions.
5. Serves or Makes (optional)
6. KEY WORDS (optional).
7. Sepatator (use '-----')
6. CHEFUNIT.TBL containes a list of units that are not to be divided.
And must be on the same drive/user as CHEF.COM.
EXAMPLE
-------
Something different for lunch.
Cheesers
4 tortillas 1/2 lb mild cheddar, thinly sliced
2 green peppers, diced or grated
1 zucchini, diced 1/2 c diced or shredded chicken, ham,
1 onion, diced turkey, or ground beef (opt.)
Lay tortillas flat on cookie sheets. Layer chosen ingredients on each
tortilla, beginning with meat, if any. Top with cheese. Put cookie sheets
into oven and bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees or until cheese is bubbling.
Remove from oven and serve immediately.
This dish is well-suited to substituting any left over meat and vegetables you
may have for those listed here. We like to use thin slices of celery and
mushrooms in place of the green pepper and zucchini.
Makes 4.
KEY WORDS: appetizer, main dish, leftovers, snack, kids, hi-pro, vegetarian,
lunch, brunch, easy, quick, menu-7

KEYWORDS
--------
Here is a list of commonly used keywords. These aren't the only ones, but
just suggestions.
Appetizer Gift Pasta
Baked goods Hi-Pro Eggs
Beverage Holiday Cheese
Bread Kids Vegetables
Breakfest Leftovers Poultry
Brunch Lunch Fish
Casserole Main dish Meat
Cookies Make ahead Meatless
Dessert Outdoor Snack
Easy Potluck Pastry
Entertain Salad Sauce
Ethnic Soup Merinated
Freezes well Spicy Merinade
Note: When making your key word list you should always put what kind of food
the recipe makes. (e.g., Dessert, Casserole, etc.)
One way of trying to keep the recipes organized (probably impossible with
everyone adding their own contributions) is to use one of the following as a
keyword in each of your recipes. This way, if you're looking for a specific
kind of food, you can search for 'menu-7' for instance.
Menu 1 - Holiday Menu 6 - WOK
Menu 2 - Middle Eastern Menu 7 - Vegetarian
Menu 3 - Barbecue Menu 8 - Seafood
Menu 4 - Brunch Menu 9 - Nutrition
Menu 5 - Company Coming Menu 10- Poultry
ONE FINAL WORD: At the time of this writing there are five recipe files in this
library (hence the name CHEF-5.LBR). As far as I know there is no real limit
to the length of a recipe file (except perhaps disk space). I have kept the
length of the files to 40k-45k. Any larger and things begin to get cumbersome
and that's about all my text editor can handle. In order to achieve some
standard of conformity, if you add a significant number of recipes and create
another recipe file (recipes.6 for instance) change the update number from CHEF-
5.LBR (as it is now) to CHEF-6.LBR and release it into the public domain for
all to enjoy. I think this would be preferable to having a bunch of seperate
recipe files floating around. Thanks.
