This procedure assumes you know have some experience with Windows. If
you are a novice, get someone competent to set this up for you.
Please do not call us for help until you have consulted either the
Windows' manual or your local Windows' expert. We are not Windows'
experts at all.
RUNNING THE DOS VERSION OF THE ONLINE BIBLE UNDER WINDOWS
=========================================================
The following files are provided to help you run the Online Bible
under Windows.
- ONLINE.ICO Online Bible icon.
- ONLINE.PIF Online Bible .PIF file
To set up the Online Bible Mini-Menu under the "Applications" group in
Windows, do the following:
1) In the "Program Manager" window, double click on the "Applications"
window to open the applications group.
2) Click on the Program Manager "FILE" option.
3) Click on the "NEW" option. A window opens titled "New Program
Object" with "Program Item" marked.
4) Click on "OK". A window titled "Program Item Properties" opens.
4a) Under "Description" type: "Online Bible".
4b) Under "Command Line" type: C:\BIBLE\ONLINE.PIF
5) Click on "Change Icon". A window titled "Change Icon" opens. Click
OK to indicate you want to create an icon for this program.
5a) Under "File Name" type: C:\BIBLE\ONLINE.ICO
6) Click "OK" three times to return to the "Applications" window. The
Online Bible icon is now displayed in this window.
NOTE: This documentation assumes you installed the program on the
C:\BIBLE directory. If this is not the case, make the
appropriate changes in the above procedure to correspond to the
directory where you installed the program.
If you wish to install the Online Bible in its own program group
or a group other than the applications group, consult your
Windows' manual. Please do not call us. Thank you.
To toggle between windowed and full screen mode press ALT ENTER.
Note the Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Greek and Hebrew packages can only
run as full screen window applications. We do not recommend running in
"Windowed" mode. The screen text is too small to be easily read.
For more information on the above procedure, consult your Windows'
manual.
CD-ROM under Windows
====================
To run CD-ROM version under Windows, first install the CD-ROM on your
hard drive and follow above instructions to create an icon in the
"Applications" window..
Writing to the Windows' Clipboard
=================================
To write to the Windows' clipboard, use a special file name of "@cb".
Any place in the Online Bible where you can specify a file name, you
can use this special file name to write directly to the clipboard.
This allows you to import text into most word processors. This works
well with the Online Bible "Quick Print" facility to transfer notes,
topics, definitions, texts etc. directly to you word processor.
The following restrictions apply:
1) Windows must run in enhanced mode. If you have a /386 or better
with at least 2 megs of memory or more, it defaults to enhanced
mode. You can force enhanced mode on a /386 or /486 by starting
Windows by issuing the following DOS command.
win /3
If Windows is not set up properly, you will get the file "@cb"
created in your default hard disk directory. Go buy some more
computer memory.
2) You cannot transfer Bible texts that use non-Roman fonts. That is,
the Russian, Arabic, Greek, Hebrew and Chinese texts. These are
transferred in transliterated format and you must use the
capabilities of your word processor to print the texts correctly.
3) The maximum you can transfer is 32760 characters of data. If you
write more than this, on the first 32760 bytes are written to the
clipboard. If you want more than that, write the data to a file
and retrieve the file with your word processor.
4) Each time you write to the clipboard, the previous clipboard
contents are lost. Therefore retrieve the data from the clipboard
into your word processor, before you write to the clipboard again.
5) The Windows' clipboard does not work under WIN-OS/2 or WARP because
IBM did not implement the interface. Fax a complaint to
1-800-426-6063. Indicate that the DOS interface INT 2F subfunctions
17xx are not implemented correctly and they do work correctly on a
real MS-DOS and Windows system to allow interchange of data using
the clipborad.
6) If you get a "General Protection Fault" using the clipboard, do not
complain to us. This is either a bug in your word processor or in
Windows itself.
7) To use the cut and paste facility when running the Online Bible as a
windowed application (not full screen), add the following to your
SYSTEM.INI file in the appropiate Windows' directory.
[NonWindowsApp]
MouseinDOSBox=)
"When you want to copy a section of scipture, hold the left mouse
button down and drag and select what you want to copy. Then click the
right mouse button and your selection will be copied to the Window's
clipboard. Move to your Windows' word processor and paste your
selection into the document." (Page 52, Christian Computing, Jan.
1995)

the January 1995 issue of Christian Computing.
