  3. This appendix will answer many of your questions about THE DISCOVERERS.
  4. If you do not find the answer to your question here you can call Knowledge
  5. Adventure Inc. at (818) 249-0212, or write down your question and fax it to 
  6. us at (818) 542-4205.  Before calling Knowledge Adventure, please be seated 
  7. at your computer with the DOS prompt on the screen.

  9. You can also read commonly asked technical questions and answers, among other
  10. things, on the Knowledge Adventure Bulletin Board System.  The BBS is

  14. ABOUT INSTALLATION
  15.  
  16. My disk compression program indicates that I have enough disk space, but The
  17. Discoverers will not install completely.  Why not?
  18.  
  19. Programs such as Stacker that compress your files on the hard disk may
  20. indicate that you have enough disk space to install THE DISCOVERERS 
  21. completely when you really do not.  These programs report on your disk space 
  22. based on how much they are usually able to compress your files.  The files 
  23. that THE DISCOVERERS copies to your hard disk are already compressed and 
  24. your disk compression program will not be able to compress them further to 
  25. give you more space.  Try to move or remove any files you don't need in 
  26. order to make room for THE DISCOVERERS, then start the Install program from 
  27. the beginning.
  28.  
  29. ABOUT STARTUP
  30.  
  31. The program won't start or it freezes on the first screen.  What's wrong?
  32.  
  33. You may have incorrect sound and music drivers installed.  Use the SETUP.EXE
  34. program supplied with the software to change this configuration.  First,
  35. change to the DISCOVER directory on your hard drive, then type SETUP and
  36. press <Enter> to run the program.  Choose the correct sound device from the
  37. list offered.  If the problem persists, see "About sound and sound devices."
  38.  
  39. If you have correctly installed your sound device, edit the KA.CNF file in 
  40. the DISCOVER directory on your hard drive so that ExtraMemory is set to None.
  41. See "About program defaults" for more information about the KA.CNF file.
  42.  
  43. Also try unloading any TSR programs or reboot your computer from a DOS system
  44. disk.  This disk must have a "Files = 20" statement and any drivers necessary
  45. to access your CD-ROM or sound card.
  46.  
  47. ABOUT MICE
  48.  
  49. I can use the keyboard with THE DISCOVERERS, but my mouse doesn't work.  What
  50. should I do?
  51.  
  52. If you find that the cursor does not respond when you move the mouse, type
  53. cd\discover and press <Enter> at the DOS prompt from your hard drive.  Then
  54. type mouse and press <Enter>.  If this solves the problem, you can modify the
  55. mouse commands in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS file to use the mouse 
  56. driver supplied with THE DISCOVERERS instead of the one currently being used 
  57. by your system.
  58.  
  59. If you are a Windows user, try exiting Windows first (using File Exit).  
  60. Then, to start THE DISCOVERERS from the DOS prompt type DISCOVER and press 
  61. <Enter>.
  62.  
  63. If you have a Mouse Systems mouse or trackball, or a Mouse Systems-compatible
  64. mouse, you may experience the hand pointer jumping to the bottom left corner
  65. of the screen.  If so, you are using a version of the Mouse Systems mouse
  66. driver that is not compatible with the Microsoft mouse standard.  Please try
  67. the mouse driver that we have provided by following the instructions above,
  68. and the mouse should then work perfectly.

  70. ABOUT SOUND AND SOUND DEVICES
  71.  
  72. When I try to run THE DISCOVERERS I don't hear any music and I get the 
  73. message "Warning: Couldn't initialize music driver; Music output disabled."  
  74. What's wrong?
  75.  
  76. You may have configured THE DISCOVERERS for a different sound device than the
  77. one you have.  Run the SETUP.EXE program described under "About startup."
  78.  
  79. If the problem persists after you have followed the instructions above, your
  80. sound card's I/O address has probably been reconfigured.  In order for The
  81. Discoverers to find your card, you must specify the correct I/O address in 
  82. the KA.CNF file.  See MusicDevParams under "About program defaults" for more
  83. information about changing the KA.CNF file.  To change the address with the
  84. SETUP program, run SETUP.EXE and select the correct sound device from the 
  85. list offered.  If you still do not hear sound and/or music while the program 
  86. runs the sound and music tests, use the arrow keys to highlight Change Sound 
  87. Settings on menu and hit <ENTER>.  You will be given the Advanced User 
  88. Options screen. Refer to "SETUP - ADVANCED USER OPTIONS" for further 
  89. information.  Select RETURN TO THE MAIN MENU and that will get you back to 
  90. the Sound Test screen, where you can test the new settings that you have 
  91. chosen with the options Play Digitized Sound Test and Play Music Test.  
  92. Once you hear both music and sound select Save Sound Settings and Exit; 
  93. your new configuration will be saved to the KA.CNF file.
  94.  
  95. If you are still not hearing music during the music test, and you have 
  96. checked your sound card's correct address, it's likely that your sound card 
  97. and another device (such as a CD-ROM drive or scanner) may be sharing the 
  98. same I/O address.  Such a conflict may cause either THE DISCOVERERS or the 
  99. SETUP program to halt.  Write down the current configuration of all of the 
  100. device cards in your computer.  Try changing some of the settings (jumpers 
  101. or dip switches) to various configurations until all of your programs work 
  102. correctly.  If you wish, you can pull the peripheral cards out of your 
  103. computer and test just your sound card with THE DISCOVERERS.  Add cards one 
  104. by one until you find the problem.
  105.  
  106. When I try to run THE DISCOVERERS I don't get sound other than music and I 
  107. get the message "Warning: Couldn't initialize sound driver; Sound output
  108. disabled." What's wrong?
  109.  
  110. Follow the advice given for the previous question, but also check and correct
  111. the IRQ Vector and DMA Channel for your sound device.  See SoundDevParams
  112. under "About program defaults." 
  113.  
  114. If you have a sound card, but the sound is not working, make sure The
  115. Discoverers is configured for the correct sound device.  To see the
  116. configuration, type "type ka.cnf" from the DISCOVER directory on your hard 
  117. drive and press <Enter>.  To edit the configuration file in Windows, click 
  118. on the Discoverers Config icon.  To change the configuration, run the 
  119. SETUP.EXE program described under "About startup." Also, run the test 
  120. program supplied with your sound card to make sure it is working.  If there 
  121. is a volume control dial, make sure that it is turned up.  If it is still 
  122. not working, you may need to reconfigure your sound card jumper board 
  123. settings to another I/O address or IRQ vector.  If you've changed any of 
  124. the factory settings (switches, jumpers) on your sound card, you must let 
  125. the program know these new settings.  See MusicDevParams and SoundDevParams 
  126. under "About program defaults." 
  127.  
  128. I purchased a sound device after installing THE DISCOVERERS.  How do I get 
  129. the software to recognize my new piece of hardware?
  130.  
  131. Type setup at the DOS prompt from your C:\DISCOVER directory on your hard
  132. drive and press <Enter>.  Then highlight the corresponding sound device 
  133. and THE DISCOVERERS will be reconfigured to work with your new hardware.

  135. ABOUT HARDWARE COMPATIBILITY
  136.  
  137. Can I use THE DISCOVERERS on an EGA or laptop display?
  138.  
  139. THE DISCOVERERS won't run on some laptops because it uses a special high-
  140. resolution VGA mode.  It will not work on an EGA monitor, or on the internal-
  141. plasma or LCD monitors on laptop PCs.  Most laptops, however, have a 
  142. connector for an external monitor, and THE DISCOVERERS will work fine with 
  143. your laptop hooked to an external color VGA monitor with the internal LCD 
  144. monitor disabled.

  146. ABOUT SOFTWARE COMPATIBILITY
  147.  
  148. I have trouble running THE DISCOVERERS after using certain memory-resident
  149. programs.  What should I do?
  150.  
  151. THE DISCOVERERS requires approximately 520 kilobytes of RAM in order to run.
  152. Even when there is adequate total RAM to run the program, there may be
  153. conflicts with other programs occupying memory.  If you experience difficulty
  154. in running THE DISCOVERERS under these circumstances, please remove other
  155. programs from memory before starting THE DISCOVERERS.

  157. ABOUT PROGRAM DEFAULTS
  158.  
  159. Is there a way to change certain defaults in THE DISCOVERERS?
  160.  
  161. Yes.  You can change the default configurations by using a text editor (e.g.,
  162. the DOS text editor if you are using DOS version 5 or later) to alter the
  163. KA.CNF file in your DISCOVER directory on your hard drive, or by clicking on
  164. the Discoverers Config icon if you are running THE DISCOVERERS under Windows.
  165. The case of letters and spacing between words do not matter.
  166.  
  167. NOTE: The easiest way to change THE DISCOVERERS sound settings is to run the
  168. SETUP.EXE program described under "About startup" and under "About sound and
  169. sound devices." 
  170.  
  171. SoundDevice: Type the name of the sound device you have hooked up.  
  172.  
  173. AutoMovie: Type On or Off to make movies play automatically or only when you
  174. click on the Audio/Video button.
  175.  
  176. Printing: Type Detect, Yes, or No to indicate whether you want the program
  177. to automatically detect if your printer is hooked up, or to assume that it is
  178. on or off.
  179.  
  180. PrinterPort: Type LPT1, LPT2, or LPT3 to indicate which printer port your
  181. printer is hooked up to.
  182.  
  183. MusicVolume: Type a value from 50 to 80; the lower the number the softer the
  184. music volume while digitized sounds are playing.  This setting does not 
  185. change the overall music volume; music volume is altered only while 
  186. digitized sounds are being played.
  187.  
  188. MouseSensitivity: Type a value from 25 to 100 ; the higher the number, the
  189. more sensitive and responsive your mouse is to your movements.  Lower numbers
  190. make it easier for younger children to handle the mouse.
  191.  
  192. Music: Type On or Off to turn the musical accompaniment on or off.
  193.  
  194. DigitizedSound: Type On or Off to turn the digitized sound (narration) on or
  195. off.
  196.  
  197. ExtraMemory : Type Automatic, XMS, EMS, or None to indicate whether you want
  198. the program to detect extra memory and use it automatically or to use only
  199. extended, only expanded, or no extra memory.
  200.  
  201. MusicDevParams: THE DISCOVERERS will look for your sound card at the address
  202. set in the factory.  You need not change these default parameters unless you
  203. have changed the factory settings (switches, jumpers) on your sound card.
  204. Type an I/O address for your MIDI audio device, e.g., A240.  See the
  205. documentation that came with your audio device.  This setting can also be
  206. easily changed by running the SETUP.EXE program described under "About
  207. startup" and under "About sound and sound devices." 
  208.  
  209. SoundDevParams: THE DISCOVERERS will look for your sound card at the address
  210. set in the factory.  You need not change these default parameters unless you
  211. have changed the factory settings (switches, jumpers) on your sound card.
  212. Type an I/O Address, IRQ Vector, and DMA Channel for your digitized sound
  213. audio device, e.g., A220 I7 D3.  See the documentation that came with your
  214. audio device.  This setting can also be easily changed by running the
  215. SETUP.EXE program described under "About startup" and under "About sound and
  216. sound devices."

  218. NOTE: The following settings are not normally changed by users.

  220. MusicDriver: Indicate the name, including path, of the music driver to be 
  221. used by your sound device.
  222.  
  223. SoundDriver: Indicate the name, including path, of the sound driver to be 
  224. used by your sound device.
  225.  
  226. CDDRIVE: Indicate the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.
  227.  
  228. HDDRIVE: Indicate the drive letter of your hard drive.
  229.  
  230. CDROOT: Indicate the path of the CD-ROM directory containing THE DISCOVERERS
  231. files.
  232.  
  233. HDROOT: Indicate the path of the hard drive directory containing The
  234. Discoverers files.
  235.  
  236. I am using the CD-ROM version of THE DISCOVERERS with a 486 processor and the
  237. movies are pausing or running slowly.  What should I do?
  238.  
  239. First try running the program under Windows.  If that doesn't help, reinstall
  240. the program, selecting the 386 version of THE DISCOVERERS when asked.

  244. Can I print the graphic images?
  245.  
  246. NOTE: Images in this product may not be reproduced or transmitted in any form
  247. or by any means, electronic or mechanical, including photocopying, recording,
  248. or by any information storage and retrieval system.

  250. What can I do about video problems like stripes on the screen?
  251.  
  252. You may need to move some DIP switches on your video card.  For example, if
  253. you see horizontal stripes on the screen while using Headland Technology's
  254. Video-7 VRAM card to display VGA graphics, move DIP switch number 8 to the
  255. position opposite the one that it is currently in.  This will enable IBM
  256. nonstandard video modes to display correctly without affecting the operation
  257. of your other software.
  258.  
  259. Can I copy the disks from the 3.5-inch to 5.25-inch format to use at home?
  260.  
  261. No, the files are compressed in a unique arrangement.  You may exchange your
  262. 3.5-inch diskettes for high-density 5.25-inch diskettes by sending them to
  263. Knowledge Adventure, Inc. in their original, unopened envelope.
  264.  
  265. Is the program copyprotected?
  266.  
  267. No.  However, it may be difficult to copy from one medium to another, due to
  268. compression and disk arrangements.
  269.  
  270. Why does my VIRUSCAN program detect a virus on THE DISCOVERERS program?
  271.  
  272. There are old versions of the VIRUSCAN program that can be fooled to think
  273. there is a virus when there really isn't.  Check the program with Norton
  274. AntiVirus.  It probably won't report anything wrong.
