L List/Select File Use this option to: 1.) List Disks Files, Sizes, Attributes 2.) Select a File Name for the File Name Buffer 3.) Do an On-The-Fly File Delete 4.) Add File Names to the Clip Board 5.) Move Clip Board Files into Directory Options Available to Command: 1.) Search Mask - Files may be searched using any valid DOS Search Mask... *.*, *.exe, A??BC.*, etc. 2.) Output may be Sorted. ** MORE **List/Select File (Continued) Steps 1 and 2, Search & List Options: Enter a Search Mask: - Enter any valid DOS search mask. Sort Output: - Press [RETURN] for Yes or Enter [N] for No. For Example, to list files ending with EXE... Enter *.EXE ** MORE ** List/Select File (Continued) PAGES: Use PgDn for the next screen of the file list Use PgUp for the previous screen Available Commands: Use the cursors (Up and Down) to select a file. [RETURN] Enters the Hi-Lighted file name [DEL] Deletes the Hi-Lighted File [INS] Moves Clip Board Files into Directory [GRAY+] Enters the Hi-Lighted File into the Clip Board [ESC] Exit List/Select Files. D Change Drive Use this option to change the drive FileBoss is currently looking at. Any valid logical drive will be accepted. P Change Directory Use this option to: 1.) Change Directory 2.) Remove Directories 3.) Create Directories A directory list (similar to the Files List) is displayed. ** MORE ** Change Directory (Continued) FileBoss begins its directory search from the current directory. Once you have selected a directory, FileBoss searches for subdirectories off the selected directory. If any are found, FileBoss continues with the directory list so that you can move as deeply as you like into the existing subdirectories. You can stop at any point by pressing [ESC]. You can stop at the current directory by selecting <Current>. Selecting <Parent> sets the directory one level above the current directory. ** MORE **Change Directory (Continued) Commands Available to Option while in directory listing: [RETURN] Changes to the Hi-Lighted directory and searches for continued subdirectories. [DEL] Deletes/Removes the Hi-Lighted directory. This option will fail if the directory is not empty. [INS] Activates an ADD DIRECTORY Window. [ESC] Quit. Stop directory changes. C Copy File(s) Use this option to copy files between directories and drives. You can enter any valid DOS search mask. Any valid combination of Drive:\Directory\[File, Mask] for SOURCE will be accepted. Do not designate the file name in TARGET unless you want to change the file name during the copy event. M Move File(s) Use this option to move files between directories. You can enter any valid DOS search mask. Any valid combination of Drive:\Directory\[File, Mask] for SOURCE will be accepted. Perform BULK directory moves by using DOS wild-card characters (*,?) in the SOURCE. Do not designate the file name in DESTINATION. Just the [drive:\]directory. ** MORE ** Move File(s) (Continued) Files can also be MOVED via the clip board. A clip board MOVE allows files from different directories to to be MOVED to DESTINATION simultaneously. All MOVE commands will fail if: The file already exists in DESTINATION An invalid directory was entered for DESTINATION The file to move is PROTECTED (Read Only) Attempt was made to move files across disks R Rename File Use this command to change the name of a file. DOS wild- card characters are not allowed. This command will fail if: The NEW file name already exists. An invalid file name was entered in OLD or NEW. OLD file is PROTECTED (Read Only). E Delete File(s) Use this command to erase a file or files. Bulk file deletes can be done by using DOS wild-card characters (*,?) in the file name. This command will fail if the file is PROTECTED (Read Only) or HIDDEN. You can also delete a file from the File List by pressing the [Del] key. See List/Select File for more information. X Make Directory Use this command to create new directories. Any valid DOS Directory\Sub\NextSub, etc. format will be accepted. Directories can also be created from within the Change Directory Window. Y Remove Directory Use this command to remove an empty directory. Directories can also be removed from the Directory List by pressing the [Del] key. See Change Directory. H Hide/Unhide File Use this command to Hide or Unhide a file. Advantages of Hidden Files are: - They are not detected by a DOS DIR command and are not listed. - They cannot be deleted by a DEL command. Hidden files can be modified by programs that recognize them. You can combine HIDE and PROTECT attributes for added protection. O Protect/Unprotect Use this command to make a file Read-Only. Advantages of PROTECTED Files are: - They cannot be modified unless the Read-Only attribute is changed to Read-Write. - They cannot be deleted by a DEL command. You can combine HIDE and PROTECT attributes for added protection. Z Miscellaneous Use this command to access FileBoss's Command Sub-Set: - E Execute File - S Read/Change System Time - C Read/Change System Date - B Browse/Edit Batch/Text File - I Get Disk Information - V Toggle Disk Verify Function - R Read Environment Table - M Modify Search Path T Temporary D.O.S. Use this command to temporarily access DOS. Type EXIT at DOS's command prompt to return to FileBoss. E Execute File Use this command to run a file and return to FileBoss afterward. Any executable file (.EXE, .COM, .BAT) can be run as long as there is sufficient memory available. This command is useful when you want to test batch files created or edited by the FileBoss Browse/Edit utility. You can designate paths with the file name to run. Parameters (a command tail) can be passed to the program you want to run by entering them at the PARAMETERS TO PASS prompt. ** MORE **Execute File (Continued) For Example, to run CHKDSK at the directory called DOS enter \DOS\CHKDSK at the name prompt. Enter /F at the PARAMETER prompt to pass the parameter /F to CHKDSK. All intrinsic DOS commands (such as DIR, DEL, COPY, etc.) may be run by the Execute File command. Be sure to pass the command tail at the parameter prompt. Name: DIR Parameter: /W/P S Read/Change System Time Use this command to read or set the system time. On-board clocks will not be permanently altered by this command. C Read/Change System Date Use this command to read or set the system date. On-board system clocks will not be permanently altered by this command. B Browse/Edit Batch/Text File Use this command to review and/or edit text and batch files. Enter the name of the file to be browsed at the prompt. A Path may be included to access files outside the current directory. The view window scrolls by pressing the cursor up and down keys. EDITING A FILE Press F2 to enter the edit mode. The hi-lighted line ** MORE **Browse/Edit (Continued) is now in the field editor. Make changes as you like. Editing Functions: Insert Lines = F3 & F5 Delete Lines = F9 Move Up = Cursor Up Move Down = Cursor Down & [RETURN] ** MORE ** Browse/Edit (Continued) Adding Lines to the end of the file: Position the hi-light bar at the end of the file and type away. Create blank lines by pressing [RETURN] or Cursor Down. Press [ESC] to leave the edit mode. QUIT THE BROWSE UTILITY by pressing [ESC] in the view mode. You will be prompted to save changes (if any were made) before returning to the FileBoss menus. ** MORE **Browse/Edit (Continued) CREATING NEW FILES: Enter a new file name at the prompt. FileBoss will prompt you by responding that the file was not found and will ask if you want to create it. Type Y. The new file is then created and displayed. Press F2 to enter the edit mode. Press [ESC] to exit the edit mode and review your work. Press [ESC] to leave the Browse utility and answer Yes at the Save Changes prompt I Get Disk Information This command returns several facts about the default drive: Disk Type - Floppy (removables) - - DS = Double Sided, SS = Single Sided Hard Disks and Floppies: - Sectors Per track reveals the allocation technique of the disk's format. - Sector size. 512 Bytes is standard. - Total Disk Capacity - Free Space V Toggle Disk Verify Function This command toggles DOS's verify function. Set this option ON if you suspect your disk files have not written properly due to disk errors, etc. The option will slow your disk i/o somewhat. Your disk controller must support VERIFY for this function to operate properly. R Read Environment Table This option reports your system's current environment settings. PATH COMSPEC PROMPT Etc. M Modify Search Path This option allows you to change your system's secondary search path. If the Temp DOS or Execute file commands fail set your search path to the directory where command.com resides. See your DOS manual for more on PATH.
