SECTION 1 - INTRODUCTION
In recent years there has been a trend away from publishing catalogues in book
form to preparing catalogues by computer and distributing them on magnetic
tape, with appearance in book form a secondary occurrence. This memo is the
result of the development of the documentation for the machine-readable ver-
sion of the catalogue and includes the basic information given in the original
preface of the published catalogue. This memo should be distributed along with
any copy of the machine-readable version of the catalogue.
1-1
SECTION 2 - FILE CONTENTS
A byte-by-byte description of the contents of the catalogue is given in Table
2-1. The information in the "Description" column is derived mainly from the
published version of the catalogue whenever possible. The "Suggested Format"
column is for FORTRAN-formatted reads.
Table 2-1. File Contents (1 of 3). CATALOGUE OF REFLECTION NEBULA
Suggested
Bytes Description Format
1 "V" A1
2-4 van den Bergh catalogue number I3
5 "*" if remark given; blank otherwise A1
6-15 Bonn (BD) or Cordoba Durchmusterung (CD)
number
6-7 Catalog Designation A2
8 Sign of declination zone A1
9-10 Zone (degrees) I2
11-15 Sequential number within zone I5
16 Blank 1X
17-24 Henry Draper (HD) number
17-22 HD number I6
23 "-" if second designation given; A1
blank otherwise
24 last digit of second designation if I1
applicable
25-29 Galactic longitude (degrees) F5.1
30-34 Galactic latitude (degrees) F5.1
35 Blank 1X
36-44 Spectral types from the Jaschek, Conde, and 9A1
de Sierra (1964) La Plata catalogue
45-49 V magnitude - photoelectric values from the F5.2
Warner and Swasey Observatory card catalogue
when given to two decimals.
V magnitude - others are from the BD and CD
catalogues (values are systematically too
bright for the fainter stars)
50 "V" if variable magnitude; blank otherwise A1

Table 2-1. File Contents (2 of 3)
Suggested
Bytes Description Format
51-55 Type I = nebula in which the illuminating star 5A1
is embedded in the nebulosity
Type II = nebula in which the illuminating star
is located outside the illuminated
nebulosity
(types given are: I, II, I-II, II P (peculiar),
II:, P(peculiar)
56-57 Blank 2X
58-61 Surface brightness on the blue prints of the 4A1
Palomar Sky Survey (PSS) - coded as follows:
VBR very bright
BR bright
M moderate
F faint
VF very faint
":" at end of code implies designation uncertain
62-65 Colors coded as follows: 4A1
VB very blue
B blue
MB moderately blue
I intermediate (equally bright on the
blue and red prints of the PSS)
MR moderately red
R red
VR very red
":" at the end of code implies designation uncertain
66-70 Absorption in the field containing reflection 5A1
nebula - coded as follows:
STR strong
MOD moderate
WK weak
ABS absent
These estimates are quite uncertain and may exhibit
a systematic dependence on distance.

Table 2-1. File Contents (3 of 3)
Suggested
Bytes Description Format
71-75 R(B) = maximum radii observed on the blue F5.1
prints of the PSS (arc minutes)
For stars like AE Aur, which is surrounded
by both emission and reflection nebulosity, the
quoted radius refers to the reflection nebula
only.
76 ":" If last digit is uncertain; blank otherwise A1
77-81 R(R) = maximum radii observed on the red F5.1
prints of the PSS (arc minutes)
Same note as for bytes 71-75.
82 ":" If last digit is uncertain; blank otherwise A1

SECTION 3 - FILE CHARACTERISTICS
The information contained in this section is sufficient for the user to read
the machine-readable version of the catalogue. The statistics of the contents
of the entire file are given in Table 3-1.

SECTION 4 - MODIFICATIONS AND REMARKS
The machine-readable version of the van den Bergh Reflection Nebulae Cata-
logue was received from the University of Maryland. This catalogue was pub-
lished In 1966 in the Astronomical Journal (volume 71, pages 990-998).
The original card deck was in the 026 punch and this was converted to a 029
deck. Two keypunch errors were corrected in the 029 version
1. #34 - the spectral type was changed from 09.5V to O9.5V (zero to
oh)
2. #112 - the brightness was changed from ";"to "F"
