INSTRUCTIONS:
EMPEROR AKBAR'S FAVORITE GAME IS NOW READY TO PLAY TOMMY'S WAY! THIS NEAT
BOARD GAME IS FULL OF SUDDEN TWISTS AND TURNS, YET THE RULES ARE SUPER EASY.
OF COURSE THE GAME IS BEST PLAYED IN A ROYAL PALACE IN INDIA WITH SLAVES AS
PAWNS, BUT WE'LL DO OUR BEST.
DICE:
IN THE CLASSIC GAME, COWRIE SHELLS ARE USED, BUT WE WILL USE 6-SIDED DICE
INSTEAD.
PLAYERS:
THERE ARE 4 PLAYERS. THE KEYBOARD MAY PLAY 0-4 POSITIONS, THE COMPUTER WILL
AUTOMATICALLY PLAY THE REST. IN DEMO MODE, THE COMPUTER PLAYS ALL SIDES.
EACH PLAYER HAS PIECES OF A DIFFERENT COLOR (AND SHAPE FOR THE BENEFIT OF MONO
SCREENS).
GAME SAVE AND RESTORE:
IS AUTOMATIC WHEN EXITING AND ENTERING THE PROGRAM. TO ABORT A GAME AND START
ANOTHER, YOU MUST LEAVE THE PROGRAM AND DELETE THE FILE "PACHISI.TMP".
FIRST PLAYER:
THE FIRST PLAYER IS CHOSEN AT RANDOM BY THE COMPUTER. AFTER THAT, THE TURN
ROTATES CLOCKWISE (TO THE LEFT).
BOARD & PIECES:
THE BOARD IS COMPOSED OF 4 24-SQUARE MINIBOARDS LAID OUT IN A 4-LEAF CLOVER
ARRANGEMENT AROUND A CENTRAL HOME SQUARE. EACH MINIBOARD HAS 3 8-SQUARE
TRACKS AIMED AT THE HOME, BUT UNLESS THIS IS A PLAYER'S OWN MINIBOARD HIS
PAWNS HAVE TO RACE AROUND THE OUTER TRACK AND GO THROUGH TO THE NEXT MINIBOARD;
EACH PLAYER'S HOME PATH IS OFF LIMITS TO THE OTHER PLAYERS' PAWNS.
EACH PLAYER HAS THEIR OWN START BLOCK, ENTER SPACE, AND HOME ON THEIR MINIBOARD.
EACH PLAYER HAS 4 PAWNS. THERE ARE A NUMBER OF BLUE SAFETY SPACES SPACED AROUND
THE BOARD, AND THE ENTER SPACES ARE CONSIDERED SAFETY SPACES.
THE BOARD SQUARES ARE NUMBERED FROM 1 TO 96, SEE THE PROGRAM SCREEN TO SEE HOW.
OBJECT:
THE OBJECT OF THE GAME IS TO ENTER AND RACE YOUR PAWNS AROUND THE BOARD TO HOME
BASED ON THE ROLL OF 2 DICE. THE FIRST PLAYER TO MOVE ALL HIS PAWNS HOME WINS.
MOVES:
PAWNS MOVE COUNTERCLOCKWISE ALONG THE GAME BOARD PATH. AFTER ROLLING THE 2
DICE, YOU MAY MOVE 1 OR 2 PAWNS BASED ON THE DIE VALUES. E.G., IF A 2 AND
3 ARE ROLLED, YOU MAY MOVE 1 PAWN 2+3 SPACES OR 3+2 SPACES; OR MOVE 1 PAWN
2 SPACES AND ANOTHER PAWN 3 SPACES. YOU MUST MOVE WHENEVER POSSIBLE.
TO MOVE USING THE KEYBOARD:
USE THE ARROW KEYS ON THE NUMERIC KEY PAD TO POSITION TO THE DESIRED "FROM"
PAWN, THEN HIT THE <ENTER> KEY OR THE SPACEBAR; THEN POSITION TO THE DESIRED
"TO" PAWN AND HIT <ENTER> OR SPACEBAR AGAIN. TO PASS, HIT THE "P" KEY. TO
REDO A MOVE, HIT THE ESC KEY.
TO MOVE USING THE MOUSE:
JUST POINT AT THE "FROM" PAWN, HIT THE MOUSE BUTTON, THE HIT AT THE "TO" PAWN
SQUARE, AND HIT THE MOUSE BUTTON AGAIN. TO GO HOME, HIT THE HOME BLOCK (NEXT
TO THE PLACE WHERE STARTING PAWNS ARE STORED) AS THE "TO" POSITION. TO PASS,
POINT AT THE DICE AND HIT THE MOUSE BUTTON.
ENTERING:
TO ENTER YOUR PAWN ON THE GAME TRACK YOU HAVE TO ROLL A FIVE, EITHER AS A 5
ON ONE OR BOTH DICE, OR AS THE SUM OF THE 2 DICE. IF YOU CAN ENTER A PAWN
YOU MUST.
TO ENTER USING THE MOUSE:
JUST POINT TO THE START BLOCK WHERE YOU PAWNS ARE LOCATED, AND HIT A MOUSE
BUTTON.
OCCUPANCY & CAPTURING:
NO MORE THAN 2 PAWNS CAN OCCUPY ANY SPACE, BUT THEY MUST BE OF THE SAME COLOR.
IF A PAWN LANDS ON A SPACE OCCUPIED BY A SINGLE PAWN OF ANOTHER PLAYER, THE
FIRST PLAYER CAPTURES THE 2ND PLAYER'S PAWN, RETURNING IT TO ITS START BLOCK.
SAFETY SPACES:
PAWNS CANNOT BE CAPTURED ON A SAFETY SPACE, UNLESS IT IS YOUR ENTER SPACE AND
YOU ARE ENTERING YOUR PAWN AND ANOTHER PLAYER'S PAWN IS IN THE WAY. PAWNS
OF DIFFERENT COLORS CAN NEVER OCCUPY THE SAME SAFETY SPACE.
CAPTURE BONUS:
AFTER CAPTURING A PAWN BY A DICE MOVE, YOU MAY MOVE ANY ONE PAWN AN ADDITIONAL
20 SPACES AT THE END OF YOUR TURN; DO THIS BEFORE THE DOUBLES BONUS MOVE IF
ANY. NOTE THAT YOU HAVE TO MOVE YOUR PAWN THE FULL 20 SPACES OR YOU FORFEIT
THIS BONUS MOVE. IF YOU CAPTURED 2 OR MORE PAWNS BY YOUR DICE MOVE, YOU GET A
BONUS MOVE FOR EACH CAPTURE. AND, IF YOU CAPTURE A PAWN DURING THE BONUS MOVE
ITSELF, YOU GET YET ANOTHER FOR IT, ETC.
BLOCKADES:
TWO PAWNS OF THE SAME COLOR ON ANY BOARD SPACE FORM A BLOCKADE, WHICH NO OTHER
PAWN OF ANY COLOR CAN LAND ON, PASS, OR CAPTURE. THE TWO PAWNS IN A BLOCKADE
CANNOT BE MOVED TOGETHER IN THE SAME TURN TO FORM A NEW BLOCKADE.
DOUBLES:
IF YOU ROLL DOUBLES YOU GET AN EXTRA ROLL, AND UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES,
A BONUS MOVE.
DOUBLES/NO BONUS:
IF SOME OF YOUR PAWNS ARE STILL IN THE START BLOCK, THEN TAKE YOUR TURN AS
USUAL AND ROLL AGAIN (NO BONUS MOVE).
DOUBLES WITH BONUS MOVE:
IF ALL OF YOUR PAWNS ARE OUT OF THE START BLOCKS, THEN AS A BONUS YOU GET TO
USE THE 4 NUMBERS ON THE TOPS *AND* BOTTOMS OF THE 2 DICE IN YOUR TURN; BUT
YOU MUST USE ALL 4 NUMBERS IN YOUR TURN OR YOU CAN'T USE ANY. EITHER WAY YOU
GET ANOTHER ROLL. NOTE THAT THE 4 NUMBERS ALWAYS ADD UP TO 14 SINCE THE TOP
AND BOTTOM NUMBERS OF ANY DIE ALWAYS ADD UP TO 7.
TRIPLE DOUBLES:
IF YOU ROLL DOUBLES THREE TIMES IN A ROW, YOU HAVE TO SKIP YOUR TURN AFTER
TAKING THE PAWN CLOSEST TO HOME AND RETURNING IT TO YOUR START BLOCK.
GOING HOME:
TO REACH HOME, A PAWN MUST HAVE AN EXACT DIE ROLL, COUNTING THE HOME SQUARE
AS A SPACE. AFTER MOVING A PAWN HOME, YOU CAN MOVE ANY OTHER PAWN AN
ADDITIONAL 10 SPACES AT THE END OF YOUR TURN, PROVIDED YOU CAN MOVE IT THE
FULL 10 SPACES, ELSE YOU FORFEIT THIS BONUS.
FUNCTION KEY CONTROLS:
NOTE: THE SCREEN LEGEND FOR 'TOGGLE' FUNCTION KEYS (F1, F2) SHOWS THE MODE
THAT WILL BE ENTERED BY PRESSING THE KEY, WHICH IS THE OPPOSITE OF THE MODE
IN EFFECT AT THE TIME.

BY HITTING THE KEY AGAIN.
F4,F6 LOWER,RAISE THE PITCH OF THE SOUND MADE BY THE DICE. THE
PITCH, IN HERTZ, IS SHOWN AT THE BOTTOM RIGHT OF THE SCREEN.
F5 DISPLAY THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
F7 QUIT THE GAME WITH AUTOMATIC GAME SAVE. NOTE THAT THE
REQUEST TO QUIT WILL NOT BE ACTED UPON UNTIL THE CURRENT
MOVE IS COMPLETED.
IF YOU HIT THIS KEY ACCIDENTALLY AND THE GAME ABORTS,
DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY, YOU JUST HAVE TO RUN THE GAME
AGAIN AND IT STARTS BACK UP WHERE YOU LEFT OFF. (WE
MADE IT THIS WAY SO YOU CAN GO TO SLEEP AND HIT THE
KEYBOARD WITH YOUR FACE, THEN THE PROGRAM WILL LIKELY
ABORT AND BE WAITING SAFE FOR YOU WHEN YOU WAKE UP.)
F8,F9 SLOW DOWN, SPEED UP THE COMPUTER WHEN TAKING ITS TURN.
THE DELAY CONSTANT, IN SECONDS, IS SHOWN AT THE BOTTOM RIGHT
OF THE SCREEN.
F10 (COLOR MONITORS ONLY) CHANGE THE SCREEN BORDER COLOR.
