DMAid 1.1 for Windows
This is the second release of the windoz version of DMAid. Originally a dos
program written in the early eighties, DMAid for DOS was able to roll your
dice for you, generate npc/pc characters complete with spells, saving throws,
etc. DMAid for DOS would also roll up complete rooms for the DM that could be
modified as needed or used as-is. A lot of on-line reference info saved time
looking through the manuals when playing. A combat tracking system was also
used to track the damage of monsters so the DM didn't have to keep a scratch
pad of tallies. All this is planned for the windows version too.
I would like to hear from you as to what you think is the most
important feature missing from DMAid. The easiest way to reach me is
at frank.neal@colossus.org.
You will still see a lot of open space since I am still working on adding new
features. Some buttons are inactive and are marked with a hint as "under
construction". Most buttons have hint boxes that appear after you hold the
cursor over the area for 1 second.
The main screen comes up with a row of buttons along the bottom. Four
buttons are active. They are: Dice, NPC, Combat, and Quit.
DICE
The dice option allows for an unlimited number of die sides and number
of die. There are two auto reset buttons that return the options back
to their presets or if off, allow continual reuse of a selected type
of setup. All setups are saved between sessions in the DMAID.INI file
that is located in the same directory as the DMAid program itself.
The die weight simply adds or subtracts the selected number from each
die rolled in a particular setup.
NPC
The PC/NPC generator allows for the generation of characters. This
area is not complete but it does allow for basic generation.
Not all classes may be generated and no provisions are made for
multiclassed characters. Adjustments for a characters race
is made. A spell database will be added in the future
COMBAT
This area is for the DM when he is managing a melee session. DMAid
tracks up to 25 monsters (3 in unregistered version) for remaining
hitpoints. 1-25 monsters of any level may be generated automatically or
the hit points may be entered either by entering a value in the hit
points spin box and then clicking on the monster(s) that one wants to
assign that value to or the DM may use the individual spin buttons on
each box to add hit points.
During combat the DM need only click on an individual monster's spin
buttons to remove points of damage done by players.
UTILITIES
This are is for any items needed to maintain DMAid or its databases.
Currently only printer setup is located here.
INSTALLATION
Installation of DMAid is very simple. Make a directory where you wish to
install DMAid. There should be two files in this directory. DMAID.EXE and
DMAID.INI. Then use the FILE command to add DMAid to an existing or new
program group. That is all there is to it.
INI FILE
The INI file is totally maintained by DMAid. There is no need to edit it
manually. A word on INI files in general. I get so mad when some backwoods
jerk programmer adds his ini trash to my WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI file. I'd like
to take him out and shoot'em. With this in mind I never modify any of the
windoz INI files unless there is a real reason and I cannot keep the info in
my own directory, in my own INI file. In the case of DMAid I never touch any
INI file other than DMAID.INI. If you don't like DMAid, to delete it just
delete the above programs and the icon. That is all there is to it. I hope
others will follow this example. Windoz is flaky enough without any help from
outside programmers.
SCREEN RESOLUTION
DMAid is made to work with 1024x768 and 640x480 only. Due to
shortcomings in my programming abilities I have not mastered the ideas
behind window resizing and scaling. Sorry, I am working on this. The
window sizes are saved though in the INI file so they stay where you
put them between sessions.
BUGS
They are there somewhere. It is just a matter of who finds them. If you do,
please let me know.
ABOUT DMAID
DMAid was written with the most advanced windoz development language of our
time, DELPHI. If you program in windoz and you haven't tried it yet I suggest
you do. A tip is in order though. Be sure to order the "optional" object
reference and language manual for $35. Borland like Microsoft is being a jerk
about documentation and have the warped idea that you do not need printed
manuals. They think they can improve the bottom line without them. It is a
sorry day for programmers everywhere.
FILES
The following files are included with DMAid
DMAID.EXE Main program
DMAID.INI Main program INI file
DMAID.DOC Program docs
MNAMES.DTA Male NPC/PC names data
FNAMES.DTA Female NPC/PC names data
FILE_ID.DIZ BBS file info, user may discard
REGISTRATION
DMAid is a shareware program. If you like it and you are the type that likes
to support shareware and you find it fills your needs then you will register
it. If not, you will use it anyway, without registration. There is no silly 30
day notice to tell you to stop using DMAid. It won't make any difference to
those that freeload. The best I can do is to ask you to register it if you
like it. Use a serial number of 0 (zero) during your evaluation period.
If you do register it you will receive a serial number from us that
will enable some of the features that are not functional in the
non-registered version. Most notably will be the enabling of all the
print features for the characters. The program will print now but none
of the stats will be shown.
Registration is for the life of the program. As new versions come out
the key you originally received will continue to work. There will be
no additional charges or upgrades as features are added.
Show the first name and last name exactly as you wish it to be used on
your registration.
To register, send $20 to:
Frank R. Neal
15980 Antioch Rd.
Stilwell, KS 66085
Visa and MasterCard are also accepted. Email or mail your credit card
number, Name as it appears on the card, the amount ($20,00), and the
card expiration date. The first and last name on the credit card will
be used for registration.
Email may be sent to me at frank.neal@colossus.org or if you are still
in the stone age you may reach me at 76563,1777.
FREE REGISTRATION
I need about 700 male D&D type names and 200 female names in standard
ascii format. I will give a free registration to the first person from
whom I accept a list of this size. I will give one for the male and
one for the female. If your list is accepted I become the owner of the
list and the submitter retains no rights. The names need to be one per
line with a maximum length of 25 characters. Each line shall be
terminated with a CR/LF.
RELEASE HISTORY
05-14-95
Ver 1.0 Initial release.
05-19-95
Ver 1.1 I was sure red faced with 1.0. Seems the print
routines, that are shareware, were crippled by the author and I didn't
know it. Seem that it will not run without Delphi being loaded. So
when DMAid is in stand alone run mode it stoped with a message telling
the user to register his program. Well the check was in the mail and
it is here and the problem is corrected so the program is at least
operational now.
Also added the first version of the combat manager so that is why we
are at version 1.1 instead of 1.01
XX-XX-XX
Ver 1.2 You can tell I am new to windows with the sizes of the windows
being what they are. I think I have the screens fixed to where they
work on 1024x768 or 640x480.
I was overflowing an integer value for the gold piece generator that caused
an overflow error. Fixed.
Added a label to show current value of user defined die in DICE window.
NPC/PC generator now generates names automaticly in auto mode. Name may also
be entered manualy now also.
Allowed spell counts are now generated automaticly for Wizards and Clerics
per the spell tables.
Added a utility window. This window currently only has access to the printer
setup. More to come inthe future.
