  19. This is a very complete and well organized text on data communications.  
  20. The intent of the work is to address the components of a computer
  21. network system, and this succeeds quite well.  (Those interested in
  22. network specific topics, such as routing, should look elsewhere.)
  23.  
  24. Areas covered include introductory material, layered protocols,
  25. polling protocols, satellite networks, local area networks, packet
  26. switching, X.25, digital networks, a brief look at TCP/IP, personal
  27. computers, PBX and upper layer protocols.  Additional reference
  28. material is included in the appendices.

  30. Occasionally, the material becomes too specific and shows signs of
  31. age.  The chapter on personal computer networks uses concepts and
  32. jargon which will be quite foreign to those familiar with the micro
  33. field.  By and large, however, this is an excellent source not only
  34. for a general overview, but as a reference in a number of data
  35. communications areas.
