  1. Print Drivers
  2. -------------
  3. Please ensure that you have the latest Windows print drivers. The
  4. latest Microsoft drivers can be obtained from their BBS at (206) 936-
  5. 6735. Compuserve users can GO MSL to find access them. Adobe has
  6. released its own PostScript 1 driver and is available from Adobe for
  7. $24.95 (800-833-6687). Alternatively, one can download it from places
  8. like Compuserve. LaserJet IV users must have a driver later than
  9. version 31.v1.27.
  10.  
  11. Printing with TrueType
  12. ----------------------
  13. Complex or poorly produced TrueType fonts can cause a number of
  14. problems in Windows. This is further aggravated if any of the following
  15. conditions are present:
  16.  
  17. You are using 4MB or less of memory.
  18. Symbol fonts without Unicode assigned values.
  19. You have a significant number of fonts installed, or a high number of
  20. complex TrueType fonts.
  21.  
  22. Workarounds may vary, but here are a few suggestions:

  24. If you use the HP LaserJet IV driver, try setting graphics mode to
  25. raster. To do this, double-click on the Control Panel icon, double-
  26. click on the printer icon, select the HP LaserJet 4 printer driver,
  27. press the Setup button, press the Options button, change the Graphics
  28. Mode from HP-GL/2 to raster in the Graphics section, press OK, press OK
  29. again, press the Close button, and close the Control Panel.

  31. With LaserJet III drivers, open the Control Panel, select Printers, and
  32. work your way through Setup, Options, of the L/Jet driver and turn on
  33. (x) Print True-Type as Graphics.

  35. If you are familiar with editing the WIN.INI file, insert the following
  36. lines (make a backup first).

  38. [TrueType]
  39. Outlinethreshold=200
  40. TTIFCollision=1
  41. TTEnable=1
  42. TTOnly=0
  43.  
  44. The last two lines are normally already present. The Outlinethreshold
  45. default is 256 (without its inclusion), but reducing this down will
  46. allow more complex fonts to print. However, there may be a price such
  47. as reduced processing speed, or some problem with other fonts.
  48. The TTIFCollision=1 gives preference to the use of Truetype when a user
  49. has more than one format of the same named font. The practice of having
  50. similar names should really be avoided at all costs.
  51. In addition, if you are using additional font rendering systems such as
  52. ATM, SuperPrint or Speedo, check the font substitution areas of the
  53. respective *.ini files to ensure that no duplication of font names can
  54. occur (i.e., having Helv or Helvetica substituted more than once in
  55. different files) this includes the WIN.INI.

  57. If incorrect substitution occurs, re-install all of your fonts. Also,
  58. try entering an additional line in the FontSubstitutes section of
  59. WIN.INI.

  65. To force the use of a particular font. (note that the above named fonts
  66. are examples of the font names as they appear on installation).

  68. Try to limit the number of fonts available to no more than 180. If you
  69. choose to have hundreds of fonts on your system, consider a font
  70. manager such as FontHandler.
  71.  
  72. If when installing a font, the same font with a different file name 
  73. is already installed, it is unlikely that you will be able to install 
  74. the new version as the first file in the directory is the one available. 
  75. So, remove the old font before installing.
  76.  
  77. Alternatively, if you have ATM, use the PostScript version.
