Here's the latest revision of the open jam sessions list.  Further
additions, comments, corrections, etc. VIA MAIL PLEASE, are welcome.
I'll maintain the list, revise it, and repost it periodically.
My thanks to all of you who have contributed to the list!

This edition of the list has been sorted by State/Province/Country to make
it a bit easier to find entries for a particular area.  In response
to reader requests, I'm also trying to figure out a way to classify
jam sessions into loose categories, i.e. "blues", "folk", etc., so that
it's a bit easier to locate sessions by genre.

Finally, if you notice a missing "Contributed-by" field where your name
should be, please let me know; it's handy to have someone to steer
questions to when they come up, and it's also nice to know who
should get the credit for the entry.  As a note to folks out there
who have questions about particular jams: sometimes the person who
contributed the entry has current information, sometimes they don't.
The best way to find out is to ask nicely, and not to be too surprised
if it turns out that they moved away from the area 2 years ago. :-)

Tucson, AZ:    Rusty Nail, 326 N. 4th Avenue, has a Tuesday night
    "Celtic Jam" ... actually a mish-mash of contra dance music +
    american/anglo/keltic tunes + whatever.  They also have an open
    mike night on Fridays.

Berkeley, CA: The Starry Plough, corner of Shattuck and Prince
    Irish music and dancing every Monday night.  Dancing classes
    start around 7pm, music starts around 9pm.

Covina, CA: The Fret House - guitar store by day, open mic session at night.
    Open mic is the first Saturday of the month, starting at 8 pm
    and going till around midnight.  There's a sign-up at 7:30, it
    costs a buck either to play or watch and refreshments are served
    at intermission.  Overall the crowd is very friendly and the
    sound system is excellent.  The average performer is moderately
    talented and plays both familiar tunes and original material.

Davis, CA: There is a "traditional" tune jam at Steve's Pizza, 314 F St.,
    on alternate Wednesday evenings from 7:30 - 10:00 PM.  Beginners
    are welcome; the level of playing is variable, ranging from novice
    to competent amateur level.  Both Irish and traditional American
    tunes are commonly played.

Folsom, CA: Sutter Street Saloon, 614 Sutter St, 916/985-3280;
    Sun, 8pm; $3.00 cover. A pretty loose blues jam in the historical
    section of town.  The jam is host by The Blues Busters; the guy
    to talk to is the guitarist, Jimmy. [ Update: defunct as of July 1993]

Lodi, CA: R Place, 710 South Beckman Road, 209/369-4767
    Thu, 8pm; no cover. Guitar Mac and the Blues Express plays a set,
    then anyone can come up to jam. A real bunch of gentlemen and a
    good band. [ Update: defunct as of July 1993 ]

Los Angeles, CA: In Melrose, the Nucleus Nuance is a classy place with
    a Monday night jam session.  Mostly real book type tunes, good
    house rhythm section but rhythm players can also sit it.

Sacramento, CA: There's a pretty traditional blues jam held at the
    "Torch club", 16th and Lst in Downtown Sacramento every Sun
    and Tues night from 9pm 1-am. Ranging from good to
    pro musicians. No cover.

Santa Cruz, CA: Callahan's - On Water St. one block east (and slightly
    north) of Ocean St.  Thursday night blues jam, 8:30 - 1. House
    band plays a couple sets.  Sign up on set list (usually 4 sets).
    Players range from not very good to very good. Anyone who gets on
    the list gets to play.  Also have a "talent night" on Sundays.

Santa Cruz, CA: The Kuumbwa holds a weekly jam, usually on Tuesday nights.
    Admission is $2; usually mainstream jazz, beginner to advanced.

San Diego, CA:    The Espresso Literati (a cafe/bookstore) has a Saturday
    afternoon jam from 2-5 PM, hosted by guitarist Art Johnson
    and a rhythm section.  It usually consists of a first set by
    Art and his friends then the jammers sit in.  Espresso Literati is
    in La Jolla (a nice part of San Diego), at the corner of
    Fay and Kline (downtown La Jolla. Not to be confused with
    downtown San Diego).  Jazz, real book type stuff.

San Jose, CA:  Garden City, 360 S. Saratoga Ave., has Tuesday night
    jazz jam session hosted by pianist Smith Dobson supplying
    the core rythm section.  Pretty open atmosphere, real book

San Francisco, CA:  The Plough and Stars, 116 Clement, SF, has an open
    Irish jam on Sunday nights. This is a very hot session, the level
    of playing is at a professional level. Sessions begin at 8 PM or so,
    and often last until 1 or 2 AM.  Leif Sorbye, of Tempest and formerly
    Golden Bough, has been a regular in the past.

San Francisco, CA:  Owl & Monkey Cafe, 9th Street btwn Irving & Judah (Sunset).
    Folk music every Thursday night.  Signup at least one or two Thursdays
    in advance.  [10 minutes each.]  It gets crowded really fast, so show
    up early.  Really laid back atmosphere.  They also have an open poetry
    night -- I forget which night [I'll find out.]

Boulder, CO: J.J. Mccabe's, downtown Boulder about the 1000 block of Walnut,
    no longer has live music.

Boulder, CO: The Outback (3141 28th St.) has a jam session on Thursday nights.

Boulder, CO: Round Midnight, 8th & Pearl, has a jazz jam on Wednesday nights.
    The house band starts at 9, jam goes from 10-12.  The environment seems
    to depend on who is booked as the house band for the month, but when I
    was there, with Joe Bonner leading the band, everyone was welcome to
    play as much as they liked.  Phone [phone].

Boulder, CO: There is a jam session at the Boulder Theatre (transplanted
    from the old JJ Mccabe's) but it's apparently somewhat overblown.
    Brian notes: "The jam session was moved to the Fox Theatre, where
    it became even more exclusive, but that scene ended in May 93.
    Now it's resurfacing at the Boulder Theatre and I have no reason
    to think it will be any less exclusive.  The theatre's have large
    stages, PA, & lighting systems resulting in a "big production"
    which, IMO, is completely inappropriate for such a jam session."

Boulder, CO: The Colorado Daily mentioned that The Pearl Street Cellar (nee
    Club Makalu) at Ninth and Pearl has a Wednesday blues jam sponsored by
    the group Bleeker Street. I haven't made it there yet. It's free
    according to the article. No other specifics mentioned.

Ft. Collins, CO: The Bar Bazaar (downtown) is once again holding a Monday
    Blues Jam; Mark Van Ark leads it.  Pretty open after the
    first set.  They also have a call-in-to-schedule-in-advance
    "acoustic showcase" hosted by Scott Allen on Wednesday nights;
    some of the time is spent in open jam.

Ft. Collins, CO: Linden's (downtown) has an acoustic jam hosted by
    Don Cordes and Rob Solomon *most* Tuesdays.  Update: as of 9/93,
    this jam has been discontinued.

Ft. Collins, CO: AJ's on Linden (downtown) has a rock and roll jam
    on Wednesday nights.  It's pretty loose, with a tendency
    towards 70's/80's classic rock tunes.  As of 9/93, this jam
    has been discontinued, probably because AJ's has been discontinued. ;-)

Denver, CO: Swallow Hill Music Association has an open acoustic blues jam
    on the third Sunday of the month; the session is led by Mary Flower
    and takes place from 4 to 6 pm.  There's also an open bluegrass
    jam (also on the third Sunday) from 1 to 3 pm.

Washington, DC: New Vegas Lounge, 1415 P Street NW, [phone] has an
    open mike night on Thursdays. It's run by a local band led by
    Rickie Lee who is a hot guitarist. The club is run by Dr. Blues
    who will get up and sing without much encouragement. Lots of fun,
    but Ave. P and 14th is not a nice place to be at two in the morning.

Washington, D.C.:    The Zoo Bar on Connecticut Avenue, just across from
    the main entrance to the National Zoo, has an Irish music jam
    every Sunday night at 9:00 PM.  This jam has tended to change
    location every few years, and also it skips nights occasionally
    when there's some special event.

Washington, D.C.: A note from John about current info:
    BTW, I highly recommend anyone wanting to know what's currently
    happening in town, as far as the music scene is concerned, pick up a
    copy of the Washington City Paper (free, comes out on Thursdays) and
    possibly the Friday edition of the Washington Post for their Weekend
    magazine (which also includes Baltimore clubs in its listings). These
    two together will basically inform you about 80-90% of the live music
    clubs in the area.

Atlanta, GA: "Sounds of Buckhead" no longer has an open jam; they've
     gone to a DJ/dance format.

Atlanta, GA: Fellini's Pasta in Little 5 Points has a Monday night jazz jam,
    which starts at 10 PM.  The house rhythm section is the JAS trio,
    one of whom (James) leads the session.

Atlanta, GA: Just Jazz in Buckhead has a Sunday night jazz jam, and
    a Tuesday night blues jam "with the Hammond B3 Organ".
    Both start at 9 PM; call 404-355-5423 for more details.

Atlanta, GA: Penta Hotel, 26th floor, in downtown Atlanta...starts at 9 PM
    on Wednesdays. The purpose of this open Jazz session is to
    recruit local folks for the live broadcasts on Friday and Saturday.

Chicago, IL: Kingston Mines, on Halsted a few blocks north of Fullerton,
    has a blues jam on Monday nights from 9-??.  Amateur jam is
    usually during the first part of the evening, pro jam is later.
    This is *THE* blues jam; folks such as Keith Richards, Vanessa
    Davis, Albert King, Koko Taylor, and so on have been known
    to drop in.  [phone].  [ Update: in 6/93, Wilbur Pan
    <[e-mail]> reported that the paper lists the
    Frank Pelligrino Blues Band as playing on Mondays and suggests
    that the jam session may no longer be actice.  Can anyone

Chicago, IL: B L U E S Etcetera, 1124 W Belmont, 312/525-8989;
    Weds. 9pm; $3.50 cover This is a well laid out, spacious club
    near Wrigley Field. Open jam sessions follow a set by Glenn
    Davis and Straight Shooter.  Also has an open jazz jam on
    Mondays at 9:30 with Brad Goode Quartet, no cover.

    Sometimes Mama Rosa makes her great lasagna. Rosa's also does the
    periodic 1:30-6am BluesCruises on Lake Michigan during the summer.

    Tues. 9:30pm; $3 cover Very favorite small club in same
    neighborhood as Kingston Mines. It's been around for years. Jams
    hosted by Ron Shanaver. [ Update: As of June 1993, Chris Sherpitis
    <[e-mail]> reports that Wise Fools has finally been
    shut down for good.  There have been intermittent troubles with
    the IRS (the US tax collection agency) in the past; I wonder if

Chicago, IL: Hugh's, 720 S. Barrington Rd. in Streamwood, [phone],
    has an open jam on Sundays beginning at 6 pm.

Chicago, IL: Lee's Unlead Blues, 7401 South South Chicago Blvd.,
    [phone].  Every Friday and Saturday Lee (a woman) hosts
    Buddy Scott & The Rib Tips. Buddy is a Chicago staple along with
    Muddy Waters, Koko Taylor, and others.  He has been at Lee's for
    at least the past 5 years.  He is almost always on Chicago Blues
    Legends tapes. There is an open mic usually on the late set both
    nights.  The first starts around 11pm.  Good local regulars
    (including Johnnny Taylor's son) appear.

    Note: Buddy is also at Rosa's on Monday night.  There is no charge
    at either club ONLY WHEN BUDDY APPEARS.  He does not allow a cover
    to be charged when he plays.

Chicago, IL: The (Irish) Abbey Pub, 3420 W. Grace, has open sessions
    for Irish traditional music every Sunday night (starting
    around 8pm).  The people here are _fairly_ serious about what
    they do, but they still have a lot of fun doing it.  One tends
    to get a few very strong players (at least one or two each
    session I have been to so far) who more or less dominate each
    session, as well as a few people who will tend to just sit
    around and come in when they feel like it.  The overall
    atmosphere is quite friendly, though.  This is (to my
    knowledge) the best place in Chicago for real Irish sessions.
    There is no cover.

    Also, every now and then, they will have a internationally
    famous performer (often an all-Ireland champion) come by
    (usually on Wednesdays, I think) and play some tunes.  Form
    what I've heard, if you are a reasonably good musician, the
    performer will often let you up on stage to play along for a
    few tunes.  For these nights, there is a cover charge
    (anywhere form $3-$15 dollars, depending on the performer).

    (Further comments from Greg) The Abby Pub (At Grace and Elston,
    312-478-4408) was the site of one of the hottest Irish sessions in town.
    There was a session on Sunday nights, and one during the week (Wed or
    Thurs?) as well.  People like Liz Carroll, Marty Fahey and other Chicago
    Irish notables would play there when I was there. ['87-'91]  If there
    are other sessions in Chicago, this is the place to find out about them.

Brookfield, IL: (western suburb of Chicago): Irish Times, 8869
    Burlington, has open sessions every Wednesday night.  The
    attitude here is a little less formal than at the Abbey, and
    it tends to show.  The songs tend to be less articulate, and
    more like the playing often found in the southern areas of
    Ireland.  They also occaisionally break out into other styles
    of folk.  When I was there last, one group of people started
    playing blues, followed by another group that started playing
    bluegrass/old-time fiddle.  The music is almost entirely Irish
    otherwise, though.  The players here also enjoy singing (much
    more so than at the Abbey), so if you like to sing irish
    ballads, this is a good place to go.  There is no cover charge.
    There is a very good fiddle player who is a regular here,
    Although I am may be wrong, I remember someone telling me that
    she was either a student or a playing partner of Liz Carroll.
    I found her playing quite enjoyable, and easy to learn off of
    (from the standpoint of another fiddle player).

         Wednesday nights.  Jam run by John Kattke (gtr/keys/sax) former
         keyboardist for the Buddy Guy Band, the Deadbeats, and many other
         Chicago bands.  10 PM

Knightstown, IN: There is regular Bluegrass jam session in Indiana.
    It's at Doug's Pickin' Parlor in Knightstown, on Rte 40 about
    halfway between Indianapolis and Richmond.  I've never been,
    but a buddy of mine says there are 20-40 musicians every
    Wednesday night, with another session Fridays.  Generally there
    are two groups, beginners and advanced that fill the place.
    I hope to get over in July to check it out and send a better review.

Indianapolis, IN: The Patio in Broadripple has a blues jam on Tuesday nights.
    Better musicians than the Slippery Noodle (see above) but more
    of them, too, so you might not get quite as much stage time.
    Reasonably easy to get into, especially if you become a regular.

Bloomington, IN: The Bluebird Nightclub, 216 North Walnut.
    The evening start off at about 10:00 with the house band, The Blues
    All Stars, playing a least one set.  Fairly loose and easy to get to
    sit in.  Players range from fair to excellent, mostly local.  There
    have been some celebrity appearances, such as members of John
    Mellencamps' band (who are, after all, locals) and others.  But those
    are rare.  It's not unusal to wait until midnight to play, so be
    prepared to wait.

    nights.  A fair bit of old-time is played, too.  It starts around
    7:30 and goes till 10:30 or 11 most nights.  The Celtic Trader is

    Starts pretty early.  You have to sign up.  House band does a
    couple of short sets, but there's time to jam.  The house band
    will even back you up if you are, say, a guitartist and you need
    a bassist and drummer, etc.  Pretty good jam.  Some "clique-ishness"
    but unknowns do get their shots.  Talk to Wally Smith, the house

    musician in town. He's recorded with Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello,

    just got back from a European tour promoting their new CD. He's
    an oustanding guitarist. Anyhow, about the open mike, the ones
    I've seen were basically acoustic. Ocassionally, he invites
    special guests, some talented local musicians, to join him for
    a set. Whitey's also serves a good chili. The kitchen stays
    open fairly late. They've got pool tables and other games.

    Unhappily, this venue closed in April of 1993.  However, as
    of 9/93, a new business has opened in the New Melody's place at

    a host band comes on and plays a few of their own tunes, then
    the stage opens up for jamming on miscellaneous blues and rock.
    All levels of players are welcome and don't have to worry

Edmonton, AB, Canada: The Commercial Hotel. This dive in Edmonton
    between 103 and 104 streets on Whyte (82nd) Avenue has a blues
    jam every Saturday from 2PM til 6PM (or later, depending on the
    host band). The current week's house band opens the show with a
    small set and usually finishes with a tune or two.
    Musicianship is usually good, but participation is clique-ish
    in the sense that most of the people have at least a
    semi-regular gig either in or out of town. If you can convince
    the guy running the Jam that you know which way is up, you'll
    likely get on after an hour's wait. The place is usually
    crawling with drummers, and is usually packed, so if you have a
    band with you, that will improve your chances. They also have a
    jam on Monday evenings, but I don't know whether it's still
    running. Much less crowded on Monday.

Edmonton, AB, Canada: The Yardbird Suite, on 103 St and 85 Ave has a Jazz
    Jam on Tuesday evenings at 9PM til Midnight or so. Very small crowd,

Vancouver, BC, Ca:  The UBC grad centre has a monthly jam/showcase every
       month.  During the summer of 1993 it will be every four weeks
       beginning May 21.  From September on it will be the first Friday
       of each month, but will be moved to the second one in the event
       of a holiday or special event.   The summer jams are casual,
       all types of music welcome, with no tight schedule.  They will
       be from 7:00 p.m. to midnight.  (The May 21 jam may start late,
       if there is a hockey game.)  The summer jams are held downstairs
       in Koerner's Pub or outdoors later on.  The winter jams are
       held upstairs in Thea's, are often crowded, and may have a
       waiting list.  Last year we had folk from 5 to 7:30, jazz from
       7:30 to 9:00, blues from 9:00 to 10:30 and rock from 10:30
       until midnight or until the bartender cut us off (sometimes 1:00).
         For the summer of 1993, the weekly Tuesday drop-in jams (musicians
       only)  have been suspended, but they may resume in September.  For

Vancouver, BC, Canada: W.I.S.E. Hall (upstairs), 1882 Adanac, [phone].
        Every Sunday there is a jam/open mic from four to eight, hosted by Peter
        Alan and Jellyroll Blues Band.   Although the host band is an acoustic
        blues band, electric players are welcome.  Also, it is not restricted
        to blues musicians --- rockabilly, celtic, folk, jazz, rock, etc. are
        also welcome.  Some very high calibre musicians show up.  As of
        April, 1993, this has moved downstairs and is an acoustic jam
        without PA,  but it will move back upstairs soon.  Some free beer
        for musicians.  More organized than the Wed--Sat ones, which compete
        with regular pub activities, but it is still casual.
              As mentioned above, every Wed.--Sat. the club allows
        acoustic jamming (no PA) in the downstairs lounge, with folk,
        blues, celtic, etc. musicians sitting around drinking beer
        and trading licks.  This can be fun, but this depends on who shows
        up (sometimes nobody).  I have found that it is a good idea to
        do your own organizing and call a few people first.  There are
        two (not the best) acoustic house guitars.  I bet jams happen
        more often on Friday and Saturday, and after concerts and dances,
        although Wedneday and Thursday used to be big nights.  Jams often
        don't begin until late, after 9 weeknights and 10 on Friday and
        Saturday, after people have a chance to have a few beer.  Non-members
        have to be signed in, but this isn't a problem if you are a
        musician and probably isn't a problem for audience for the Sunday
        afternoon jams.  It sometimes goes right to 2 (last call) or later.
        Occasionally a musician from an upstairs concert comes down and
        jams --- Johnny Cunningham (ace Scottish fiddler) was once
        there until 2:45 a.m., and Alan MacLeod brings his warpipes on
        Sundays and is often around on other nights when not on tour.

    8:30pm until 1:00am or a wee bit later. Different local folk-singers/
    musicians host it every week. The music ranges from Celtic to
    experimental, with covers of everyone from Stan Rogers to Vic Chesnutt
    (who? ok, so he's not exactly folk... still, when Angie O'Brien gets
    up there and belts out a Chesnutt tune...!). There's absolutely no
    admission, and if it's a slow night, Claude the waiter gets up to
    sing a few, too.

London, ON, Canada: Ledbelly's Blues Hall 400 Clarence St. at Dundas,
    [phone] hosts a (mostly blues, some jazz and rock) jam every
    Saturday afternoon starting around 4:00pm and going 'till 7:00pm or so.
    It's hosted by whatever band happens to be doing the weekend gig there.
    The players are usually competent to very good and there is usually a
    decent sized crowd. Talk to the band to get up and jam - you can
    usually do several tunes if the crowd likes you and there aren't a lot
    of people wanting to jam. Some of the good local players will show
    at this jam.

    Ledbelly's also organizes the annual London blues festival held
    outside in Harris Park for one weekend every August.

    This relatively informal jam is held every Tuesday night. It's hosted
    by the bar owner (Steve McCann - keys, vocals, bass pedals - if no
    bassist shows) and a few regular jammers.  The place is a bit of a dive
    and the musical calibre ranges from inexperinced to competent. They
    play a fairly wide variety of styles ranging from rock and blues to

    [phone], hosts a blues jam every Wednesday night.
    The Hot Flames (house band) supply the rhythm section for any
    jammers who are interested, but rhythm players also sit in.
    The good local players are usually here.  This bar has a very
    pleasant atmosphere and the level of performance is
    competent to very good.

    Oh yeah, it's nominally a Blues jam but you hear also some bluesy
    jazz (they think that's blues here in Holland.)

    Kevin Glackin and Ronan Browne here, along with any other greats

    good ones, but it could have changed.

Carrick, Co. Donegal, Ireland: McGinley's (I think).  As of summer, 1991,
    there was a session every Sunday night with fiddler James Byrne
    hosting things.  When I was there, Con Cassidy from Teilann was also

London, Egland: A note from Greg on sessions there:
    Too many sessions to list here, and in any case, I haven't gone to
    more than a few of them.  Here's what you do:  buy TIME OUT, the
    weekly magazine listing entertainment events in London, look in
    the music section under folk.  All the Irish sessions are listed.  Last
    I looked, there were two on Tuesdays, one on Wednesdays, four on
    Thursdays, two on Fridays, one on Saturday, two on Sundays.  Nearly all
    of them were accessible by tube, although very few were in central
    London, you have to go to outlaying areas.  I'm told that the 'Irish
    part of town' is near the Kensal tube stop.

Cregg Castle, Co. Galway, Ireland: This is a bed & breakfast in a
    17th century Irish Castle that also hosts a center for
    Irish Traditional music. The proprietors play Uillean pipes,
    whistles, Bodhran, etc., and during the summers have help
    from an 'artist in residence.' There are regular sessions
    Friday nights, but other nights as well if the mood arises.
    Hosts are a bit scattered as far as the B&B is concerned; be
    sure to remind them to show you where your room is if you
    are staying overnight.
