- Vegetarian Restaurants:
-
- Chicago Diner, 3411 N. Halsted, 935-6696
- - The best vegetarian restaurant in the Midwest. Not all vegan, but
- very vegan friendly. Tofu burgers, good soy shakes, etc. Some
- really good vegan pasta cream sauces, various vegan specials like
- seitan stroganoff, cabbage rolls w/artichoke sauce, a terrific
- Paella and fairly creative tofu roulades. All desserts vegan.
- Open Sun-Thu 11am-9pm, Fri-Sat 11am-9:30pm. Near the Addison 'el'
- station.
-
- Soul Vegetarian East, 2 blocks east of I-94's 75th Street exit.
- - Vegan. Great lentil soup and "roast beef" sandwich. Very
- inexpensive. Try the appetizer-combo platter to experience the
- chef's full range. Homemade dairyless ice-cream. On Sundays you'll
- get a fixed meal, down-home style.
-
- Country Life, 17 W. 717 Roosevelt, Oakbrook Terrace, (708) 629-2454

-
- Natraj, 2240 W. Devon
- - Indian. In USA's most bustling Indian district.
-
- Udupi Palace, 2543 W Devon, 338-2152.
- - Newly opened South Indian vegetarian restaurant. Most of the fare
- is vegan. Exceptionally prepared. Excellent food quality & service.
- Large portions.
-
- Standard India Resaurant, on Belmont
- - Indian Vegetarian. All-you-can-eat buffet.
-
- The Bread Shop
- - Near the Addison 'el' station.
-
- | Cafe Voltaire, 3231 N. Clark Street, 528-3136
- | - Very small cafe. Sometimes features plays in a downstairs room (does
- | anyone know if it's wheelchair accessible?). Open late.
-
-
- Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants:
-
- | Ethio Cafe, one block south of Mama Desta's on Clark
- | - As modest as Mama Desta's is showy, this tiny restaurant revolves
- | almost entirely around its $5.99 all-you-can-eat vegetarian buffet,
- | a feast of various textures and degrees of heat that will leave you
- | fat and happy.
-
- | The Lucky Platter, on Main St. in Evanston just E of Chicago Ave
- | - Vegetarian ragout and Mexican polenta are just two of a half-dozen
- | delectable vegetarian items on their innovative menu. Inexpensive.
-
- | Lulu's on Davis and Orrington in downtown Evanston
- | - "Dim Sum and Then Some" is the slogan for this converted hot-dog
- | stand that serves a variety of Oriental dishes at excellent prices.
- | One side of the menu is vegetarian, the other non.
-
- Charlie Trotter's, 816 W. Armitage
- - The best restaurant in Chicago. Has a vegetarian degustation menu,
- and you can get a vegan version by asking when you make
- reservations. The place is mondo expensive, expect dinner to cost
- anywhere from $100 to $200 per person. You also must wear a jacket
- and tie and make reservations at least a few days in advance, but
- the food is a sensual experience of orgasmic proportions.
- Unbelievable.
-

- (it escapes me at the moment). Highly recommended. The atmosphere
- is really cool inside, too.

- The Blue Heron, 1091 S. Virginia Street, 786-4110

- Generally a very good place for vegetarians. Few restaurants have

-
- The Chariot, 420 Eddy St, (607) 273-0081
- The Nines, 311 College Ave, (607) 272-1888

- by the same people but I have less personal experience with it.
-
- Joe's Restaurant, 602 W Buffalo, (607) 273-2693
- Little Joe's, 410 Eddy, (607) 273-2771

-
- Just a Taste, 116 N Aurora, (607) 277-9463
- - Wine and tapas bar. Many options for tapas (appetizer sized dishes
- -- make a meal from two or three), fewer for entrees. Good spinach
- salad.
-
- Moosewood, Dewitt Mall, (607) 273-9610
- - Of the Moosewood cookbooks fame. Not in the vegetarian restaurant
- category because they serve fish. Overrated in my opinion --
- Cabbagetown is better and cheaper.
-
- Sangam, 424 Eddy, (607) 273-1006
- - Northern Indian. Lunch buffet with at least two vegetarian main

-

- Oneonta
- -------
-
- In the "small" town of Oneonta there are about 20 pizza joints where
- you have no problem ordering pizza sans cheese.
-
- They have one restaurant that (used to be exclusively) serves
- vegetarian and vegan meals (I had scrambled tofu w/whole wheat toast
- and home fries for breakfast the other day). This place is ALWAYS
- packed.
-
- There are restaurants that cater to a vegetarian clientelle, and
- rarely look askance when you ask for something sans meat or query them
- about the soup stock, etc. I was at one place a few weeks ago and
- happen to be an acquaintance of the manager. I told him that the
- dinner menu needed more vegetarian, low-fat (not cheese laden) meals.
- The salad bar is excellent there, so at least that's something. He
- said they tried a veggie burger at lunch, and it was wildly
- successful, so they are going to add things to their dinner menu as
- well.

-
- Aladdin's, on Monroe
- - Middle-Eastern. Falafel, etc.
-
- Oscar's, Monroe Ave. near Goodman
- - Though the last time I recommended this place, they had a Hepatitis
- alert!!
-
- Hong Kong, on Alexander St. between Park and East
- - Will make almost any dish vegetarian. Moo Shu No-Pork is very good.
- Chinese Vegetable with Garlic Sauce is my all time favorite.
-
- Alexi's, on Monroe near Aladdin's
- - Excellent Veg Pizza and Pasta.
-
- Alvin Ord's, on Monroe across from Aladdin's
- - Excellent Veg Sandwich. Tofu burgers.
-
- Big Apple, Park Ave. btwn Culver & Berkley
- - Some excellent veg dishes. Great atmosphere, a little expensive.
-
- Thai Taste, Mt. Hope plaza
- - _Cheap_ food. They'll do most of their dishes vegetarian on request.
- - 'Vegetarian' in Thai means 'substitute tofu for flesh'. Be sure to
- insist on no fish sauce or other animal products.
-
- Raj Mahal, corner of Monroe and Alexander
-
- Wildseeds Bookstore and Cafe, 7?? University Avenue
- - Not a huge selection but pretty good.

- Syracuse
- --------
-
- It has been extremely frustrating trying to eat vegetarian in
- Syracuse. Eating out is a real problem. I am not all that crazy about
- salad and I have been actually lectured by people when I ask for
- things that are not specifically on the menu. The two Mexican joints I
- have tried both appear to put bacon in their beans. It is REALLY
- difficult to find Italian foods here that are not laden with cheese
- and/or meat.
-
- However...
-
- Vegetarian Restaurants:
-
- Cafe Margeaux, 317 West Fayette Street, 472-5498
