Pennsylvania
Philadelphia
------------
Vegetarian Restaurants:
Govinda's, South Street west of Broad Street (new location), 829-0077
- Hare Krishna vegetarian restaurant. Buffet. Pay by weight or $12.95
for all you can eat. Good food, though buffet selection is small for
the price. Great homemade bread. Friendly.
Singapore Chinese Vegetarian Restaurant(?), on Race Street between
10th and 11th, Chinatown
- We had one of the best vegetarian meals ever. The resaurant has
copied a regular Chinese menu, but substituted ALL the meat with
TVP, wheat gluten, etc. Dim sum items. Friendly owner. Great food,
quality, service, surroundings.
- I dislike this restaurant because the menu only has typical Chinese
restaurant dishes with TVP substituted for meat. There are no
creative vegetarian dishes.
1010 Cherry Street, 10th & Cherry, betw Arch & Race
- Chinese Kosher vegetarian restaurant. Serves some gourmet fare.
Delicious Sesame Lemon "Beef," Watercress with Tofu Soup. Have
blintzes.
Harmony, 9th & Arch, in Chinatown
- Chinese vegetarian restaurant.
There is a kosher Chinese vegetarian restaurant in the North-East of
Philadelphia.
Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants:
New Delhi, (I think that it is located at Walnut & 42nd (!!)).
- Indian restaurant with buffet lunches and dinners which comprise of
a good number of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. The food is
very good. If you don't like spicy food, then stay away.
Taco House, 12th & Pine
- Not too fancy, just basic cheap vegetarian student food.
Afreeya's, on Germantown Avenue in the Germantown section
- African. Very good. Specialize in raw vegetarian foods.
SouthEast Chinese Restaurant, 10th & Arch Street
- Has full variety of mock-meat (seitan) as well as `normal'
vegetarian food.
Sala Thai, at 5th and Bainbridge
- Has a very tasty vegetarian menu.
Nice falafel place near South Street.

gluten, etc. Gina's a very friendly person. Don't miss this place
if you're near town.
Summertown
----------
The Farm, 156 Drakes Lane, (615) 964-3574
- An ex-vegetarian-hippie-commune located on 3 square miles of land
just outside of Summertown. They call themselves a cooperative
nondenominational religious community. Among the businesses located
on The Farm is 'The Store' which is a small store that sells
vegetarian food, tie-dyed t-shirts, and non-vegetarian marshmellows
(the only non-vegetarian item I could find). Also located on The
Farm is a soy dairy, but there are no restaurants or other places
where one can get a meal. You can stay at their campground for $5 a
night. The Farm is an interesting place for a quick visit, but it
did not meet my expectations. To get there, take route 20 west just
out of town to Drakes Lane, go a mile or so to a fork in the road,
take the right side fork, it will take you to the gate into The
Farm.

Vegetarian Restaurants:
Kalachandji's, 5430 Gurley Ave, 827-6330
- Hare Krishna lacto-vegetarian restaurant. They serve an all-you-can-
eat buffet twice a day. Dinner's ~$8, lunch is cheaper. BTW:
Kalachandji's is a favorite with visiting veggy musicians, many of
whom have left autographed pictures and letters of recommendation
to be displayed in the lobby. Among them are Crissie Hynde(sp?),
Annie Lennox, and the B-52's.
Paisley Palace, 6106 Luther Lane at Preston, 368-2456
- Really good veggy-Indian cuisine. Now only open for lunch. Lunch
buffet Mon-Sun 11:30am-2:30pm. Order off the menu until 3:30pm.
This place is great, please go there!
Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants:
Phil`s Cafe, 2815 Elm Street, 761-8400
- Not strictly veggy, but close. Basically Tex-Mex, with lots of
interesting items like black bean nachos, and spinach enchilladas.

insist on no fish sauce or other animal products.
Kebab 'n' Kurry, 401 N Central Expwy, 231-5556
(N Central Expwy just north of Beltline - west side)

(N Central Expwy just south of Beltline - west side)
- South Indian, great Masala Dosa.
El Gallo De Oro, on Maple
- Hole in the wall Mexican/Guatamalan. Mostly omnivorous, but good
Chile Rellenos and beans.
- My memory of this place suggests to me that the food touches no
fats other than the purest lard. I'd caution vegetarians to be
careful. The owners/employees tend to speak little English.
Akbar (at Northeast Corner of COIT & Beltline)
- Indian food.
India Palace, 12817 Preston Road (corner LBJ), 392-0190
- Touted as the "best" Indian food in Dallas. Typical, but very good
Indian food. They have a vegetarian thali plate (ovo-lacto), this
is a full meal for one price. Expensive.
Bombay Cricket Club (Downtown Dallas)
- This is the sister restarant to India Palace. Not as good and more
expensive.
ZuZu, 6 locations in the Dallas/Plano area
- Very fresh Tex-Mex food. They have a bean burito plate that you can
order sans dairy. I order with double rice, corn tortillas and a
salad. They have the best chips and salsa in Dallas. Inexpensive.
- ** Note: They may use chicken broth to make their rice.
Cafe Greek, SW corner LBJ and Preston
- Vegetarian platter comes with humus, baba ganoush, falafel,
spanikopita, tabouli, a salad (I ask them to 86 the feta cheese)
and bread. Good, but moderately expensive.
Sinbad's Palace, Skillman and Abrams, 340-4445
- Middle-eastern food. Their "1st Voyage" is a vegetarian meal of
baba ganoush, falafel, salad, couscous, pita bread, and baklava
(delicious). Ask them to go light on the oil. If your are lucky, you
might get to see the belly dancer! Moderately expensive.
River Nile, 7001 Fair Oaks, 363-1128
(just east of upper Greenville near Park Lane)
- Ethiopian. There are two vegetarian dishes on the menu. Both are
good. You eat with your hands using large rounds of flat bread to
scoop up the food. The waitstaff is slightly incompetent. I
recommend you pay with cash. Inexpensive.
The Dream Cafe, 2828 Routh Street, 954-0486
(near Downtown in the Quadrangle)
- Very popular with the yuppie crowd, but casual. Good breakfasts.
Moderately expensive.
Joey Tomato's, 3232 McKinney Avenue, 754-0380
- Italian food. Very good veggie pizza. Made with grilled veggies.
They don't think you are weird for ordering without cheese (it's on
the menu that way). Inexpensive.
Cafe Panda, 7909 Inwood Road, 902-9500
- Chinese. They have a great vegetarian egg roll and veg moo shu that
you can order without eggs. Very good. I don't recommend the cold
noodles (they are frozen and taste that way). This is a classy
restaurant. Expensive.
- ** Note: Their "vegetarian" soup is made with chicken broth. I had
asked about this specifically before and they told me it wasn't,
but the last time I was there the "vegetarian" soup had chicken
in it!
If you're stuck with a group of carnivores who want to go to
one of the popular places, Tia's (Tex-Mex), Chili's (Southwestern)
and Houstons and TGI Fridays (steak/burgers) all offer veggie
alternatives, though the best dish at Houstons, the California Salad
is off the menu but still available.

Washington
Many thanks to Phil Hughes for co-ordinating the section on
Washington state.
Bellevue
--------
Raga, 556 108th Ave NE, Bellevue, 450-0336
- Very impressive. If you like good Indian food, it's worth a trip to
Bellevue to check this place out. There is a nice vegetarian section
on the menu. Dinner is order-off-the-menu, the mostly vegetarian
all-you-can-eat lunch buffet is $6.95, and well worth it.
Public Market, Crossroads Mall, NE 8th and 156th Ave NE
- A food circus with a variety of food booths, many of which have
vegetarian food. A Taste (Bite?) of India features Southern Indian
dosas (savory stuffed pancakes), and lots of other veggie
selections. There are also Middle Eastern, Italian, Chinese,
Japanese, Filipino and a pizza place, all of which have a few veg
selections. Generally inexpensive.
The Twelve Baskets, 201 106th NE, 455-3684
- "Health food" restaurant that has grown up into a fair sized
vegetarian restaurant.
Everett
-------
The India Palace, 1405 Hewitt Avenue, 252-8543
- Lunch and dinner 7-days a week. All you can eat buffet lunch is
$5.95 and available on weekends too.
Glacier
-------
There is a WONDERFUL little place that I can't remember the name of,
almost entirely veggie. Its about a mile out of glacier (the foot of
Mt. Baker) right on the "highway". It's very small. On weekend
evenings you will NOT get in without a reservation.
The italian restaurant right in Glacier is incredible, too. Terrific
veggie lasagna and run by super people.
Seattle
-------
The Seattle area has a fair number of vegetarians, and is a pretty
good place for vegetarians to live. There is Puget Consumer Coop, a
natural food coop with 5 area stores (most of which are full
supermarket size). There are several good all-vegetarian restaurants,
many restaurants that have at least a few vegetarian dishes, and most
of those that don't are very accommodating about whipping up something
special.
Public transit is really decent in Seattle and free in the core of
downtown. Off peak bus service to other places (like the U-district)
is $.85, $1.00 at peak times and you can get a transfer good for 2
hours.
Vegetarian Restaurants:
Bamboo Garden, 364 Roy Street (Queen Anne area), 282-6616
- They are a kosher vegan Chinese restaurant (really!). They have
excellent vegan "meat" dishes. The only non-vegan item is the the
fortune cookie that has egg in it. Open Mon-Sun 11am-10pm.
Black Cat Cafe, 41st and Roosevelt, 547-3887
- This used to be Morningtown. Just opened the beginning of September.
Redecorated and clean. Menu choices such as garbanzo-dal burritos,
veggie scramble, fresh squeezed OJ. Entrees in the $3.50-$5 range.
| Seems pretty tasty. Vegan options.
Blue Planet, 2208 North 45th, 632-0750
- Organic multicultural cuisine and a juice bar.
Cafe Flora, E. Madison St. (in the heart of the Madison Valley).
- Stay away if things yuppie make you ill, but if you enjoy artsy
food, no alcohol and a pleasant environment that just happens to be
vegetarian, this is a nice place. Dinner entrees run around 8-$15.
Our "Cafe Flora regular" says their food has gone from good to
excellent. She calls it "reasonably priced gourmet". Portions are
good. Some vegan options, which are indicated on the menu. Cafe
Flora is doing *a lot* of business: early evening is always very
busy.
Five Loaves Deli, 2719 E Madison (Madison Park area), 726-7989
- Vegan. A Seventh Day Adventist bakery and deli. Great Sunday brunch.
Closed Friday and Saturday.
Globe Cafe, 1531 14th Avenue, 324-8815
- Simple vegan food, really good baked items, latte with soy milk.
Funky atmosphere; worker owned.
Honey Bear Bakery, 56th and Meridian
- Good bakery with a few lunch choices that are all vegetarian.
Mid City Cafe, 5509 University Way, 623-7979
- Lacto-vegetarian. Formerly located downtown they have relocated to
the U district. Soup, veggie burgers with more choices to come.
Silence Heart-Nest Restaurant, 5247 University Way NE, U-district
- All vegetarian Indian food. Lots of vegan items. Sri Chinmoy fans
usual stuff.
Sunlight Cafe, 64th and Roosevelt
- Seattle's oldest real vegetarian restaurant. Most things have dairy.
They also have additive free beer and wine.
Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants:
Ali Baba's, 707 E. Pine
- One of Seattle's good Middle-Eastern restaurants.
Arnie's Northshore, 1900 N Northlake Way
- Although there isn't anything vegetarian on the menu, they're really
good about whipping up special stuff, such as stir-fried veggies or
a fleshless pasta. They're very accomodating.
Axum, 42nd & Brooklyn in the U-district
- Good Ethiopian food with reasonable vegetarian choices.
Azteca restaurants (locations throught the greater Seattle area)
- Now serve a non-fat bean dish as an option instead of their refried
beans, and they claim the beans are vegetarian. You can have these
non-fat beans in any of their dishes that contains beans.
Bizzaro Italian Cafe, 1307 North 46th Street, 545-7327
- This is a fairly strange Italian restaurant that has a good
assortment of interesting vegetarian choices. Expect to find things
like artichoke hearts, eggplant and feta cheeze in various dishes.
The atmosphere is as interesting as the food with all sorts of
strange things hanging from the ceiling and waiters that are pretty
strange in their own right. Open for dinner with moderate prices
($7-$12). Wine is available.
| Cafe Illiterati, 5327 Ballard Avenue, 782-0191
- Wonderful vegetarian (ovo-lacto) selections: their vegetable
pot-pie is amazing, and their Saturday and Sunday breakfast menu has
a few selections (such as the eggs florentine) that shouldn't be
missed.
Cafe Loc, 2 locations:
407 Broad (near Seattle Center)
Food Circus at Seattle Center
- Inexpensive good Vietnamese entrees. Lots of vegetarian stuff.
Cafe Long 12517 Lake City Way NE in Lake City
- Good assortment of cheap Vietnamese food, a large percentage of
which are vegetarian.
College Inn Pub, 4006 University Way NE.
- Veggie burger, vegetarian burrito, sometimes lentil soup. (One of
the cooks is vegetarian).
Flowers, 42nd and University (University District)
- Mostly vegetarian. An ex-flower shop that is now a restaurant with a
bar. Many choices are vegan. Excellent vegetarian lunch buffet with
pasta (containing eggs) being the only non-vegan choices.
Grand Palace, 417 2nd Avenue
- Thai restaurant. Curried vegetables and tofu. Noodles and vegetable
soup.
Gravity Bar, 2 locations:
415 Broadway E, (Capitol Hill), 325-7186
113 Virginia, (near Pike Place Public Market), 448-8826
- Mostly vegetarian. To quote their menu, "modern food". All sorts of
rather strange dishes and lots of fresh fruit and veggie drinks.
Maybe more yuppified than some places, but certainly a good juice
bar with many vegetarian choices on the menu. Also, vegan choices.
Julia's, two locations:
in Wallingford, 1714 N 44th, (Wallingford)
Park Place, 5410 Ballard Ave NW, (Ballard)
- Wallingford is probably the better choice for veggie choices. A
mid-priced restaurant with beer and wine. Not hippie, not formal,
just all around pleasant.
Macheezmo Mouse, 4129 University Way & 211 Broadway E
- Burritos and stuff with a reasonable number of veggie choices.
Inexpensive, clean and they have beer. Menu lists calories and
fat as % of calories.
New Orleans Restaurant, 81 Yesler Way, Pioneer Square, 622-2563
- Here's something different for the Pacific Northwest - Creole food.
Gumbo is a delicious okra soup and the New Orleans Restaurant has a
vegetarian variety. They also make a vegetarian eggplant dish.
| The Oasis, 5020 University Way NE, 527-4101
| - Authentic Middle Eastern food. Falafel, maftool, garlic rice,
| imjadarah, Sri-Lankan curry, pesto. Daily rice special (rice with
| some sort of veggie topping such as green beans and a sauce) for
| $3.95. Most meals around $6.
Panchito's, 1st and Cherry, Pioneer Square
- Mexican restaurant. Lardless refried beans, burritos and tacos.
Panko's, 4850 Greenlake Way (south of Greenlake)
- A "stir-fry" sort of place with reasonable vegetarian choices
including tofu tomato curry chow mein. Say hi to Guy, the
cook/owner. He will remember you.
| Pepe's on University Way, 4535 University Way NE, 633-3544
| - Fast Mexican food that is really fast and Mexican. Doesn't look like
| much from the outside but inside it is clean, has a great mural on
| the wall and has nice veggie choices at reasonable prices such as a
| veggie burrito (rice, beans, lettuce, tomato and sour cream) for
| $3.75, bean and cheese burrito for $2.75 and a "lunch box" special
| consisting of your choice of burrito, rice, beans and a soft drink
| for $4.50. To top things off, they make their own tortillas, both
| flour and corn, and even use a comal to grind the corn. Yes, you can
| order in Spanish.
Red Robin Burger and Spirits Emporiums (various Seattle locations)
- Meatless burger, veggie primavera, meat-free salad choices. (I was
told -- by a Red Robin employee -- that the veggie burger is
excellent and a great seller.)
Sergio's Poco Loco, 4518 University Way (in the Ave Arcade)
- A fast food window with a counter inside. Monster vegetarian
burritos (beans, rice, tomato, avocado, cheeze) for $3.50, other
vegetarian choices.

- A fresh food cafe (ingredients come from the market itself) with
lots of vegetarian choices.

good desserts, and a great veggie submarine sandwich.
Triangle Tavern, 3507 Fremont Place (Fremont)
- They have vegetarian dishes on their menu including a middle eastern
appetizer plate, vegetarian sandwich, vegetarian lasagne and lots of
micro-brew beers on tap. Often their soup de jour is vegetarian.
Thai:
- 'Vegetarian' in Thai means 'substitute tofu for flesh'. Be sure to
insist on no fish sauce or other animal products.
King's Chinese Restaurant, 15th NE and Lake City Way (Maple Leaf area)
- Now Chinese and Thai with lots of vegetarian choices. Healthy: no
MSG, brown rice available.
Little Thai, 4142 Brooklyn Ave NE (On 42nd NE, between University Way
and Brooklyn in the old church building)
- Thai. Very good. Lots of vegan choices. Vegetarian (vegan) lunch
for $3.75.
Phad Thai, 8530 Greenwood Ave N, 784-1830
- Lots of vegetarian choices; no MSG, moderate prices.

University Way between 42nd and 52nd. Many have menues in the window.
Park and take a stroll.

supermarket.
| Puget Consumer Coop, 7 locations
- A natural food coop. Most are full supermarket size.
Rainbow Grocery, 15th Ave E, between Harrison and Republican
- Cute little grocery store with bulk foods, reasonable choices and
some organic produce.
