PCVR Presents.....
Virtual Racquetball for the PC
This program allows a person using an IBM personal computer to play racquetball in a
virtual environment. The system uses the VR rendering package REND386 and a Mattel
Powerglove.
When the game begins you face the inside of a racquetball court. To your right is a
racquet and right in front of you is your hand. As you look around, a purple ball bounces
off of the walls. You grab your racquet and begin trying to hit the ball.
Requirements: 80386 IBM personal computer or better
Mattel Powerglove attached to Parallel Port
Execution: The program is executed by entering the command:
rb court.wld
at the DOS command line. The system will search for the glove and then present the game
to you. Your first step is to grab the racquet. Using the keys detailed below, you move to
the left and forward until the hand is even with the racquets handle. Once this is achieved,
grip the glove and the racquet will be attached to your hand. As a helpful indicator, the
distance number at the top of the screen will be between 0 and 350 when you are close to
the handle. It is only at this point when the racquet will be attached to your hand.
Once you have the racquet, the number at the top will be the distance indicator between
the middle net part of the racquet and the ball. The first thing you should do
is press the Y key to turn your body to the right, then use the arrows to turn
your head to the right until you see your hand. Position your view so you can
see your hand and as much of the court as possible. There are two ways to
hit the ball. The first is to hit the ball with the front of your racquet.
This will cause the ball to speed toward the front of the court. The second
way is to hit the ball with the back of your racquet. This will cause the
ball to speed to the back of the court. The ball will slow down in each case
over time.
The easiest way to use the game is to set up the glove to the right of your
computer and face the monitor. This way you can move your body with the
keyboard keys and the glove at the same time. It takes some getting use
to but after a while you can run around the court pretty easily.
The action keys are:
L,l - move body to the left
R,r - move body to the right
F,f - move body forward
B,b - move body backward
Y,y - turn 90 degrees to the right
right arrow - turn head to the right
left arrow - turn head to the left
up arrow - tilt head up
down arrow - tilt head down
Source: The source to the program is included so that you may change the keys are
any other parameters of the game. The libraries and object files necessary
are included in the self extracting file called SOURCE.EXE.
Sega: Sega 3D glasses support will be included shortly.
