Virtus WalkThrough for Windows
Wins PC/Computing's MVP Award
CARY, N.C. (Nov. 17) - Virtus Corp.'s interactive
3-D modeling program, Virtus WalkThrough for Windows,
has won PC/Computing Magazine's coveted "Most Valuable
Product" award.
Competing in the painting and drawing Software
category, WalkThrough topped Adobe Photoshop
2.5, CorelDRAW 4.0 and Micrografx Picture
Publisher 4.0 to win one of the industry's
most sought-after awards. Winners were announced
at COMDEX/Fall in Las Vegas on November 14.
"We're thrilled to receive this award," said
David Smith, Virtus founder and president. "It
was an honor just to compete in the same category
with such incredible products."
Paul Somerson, editor-in-chief of PC/Computing said,
"This year's most valuable products and finalists
have a lot to brag about. Their selection is based
on evaluations designed to determine which are real
productivity tools."
PC/Computing editors considered more than 5,000 new
or updated hardware products and almost 6,000 software
packages -- introduced in the past 12 months -- before
selecting 93 products in 31 categories as finalists.
Selection criteria included product usability,
technological innovation and effectiveness in helping
users work productively.
WalkThrough provides an object-oriented, real-time
3-D graphics environment featuring affordable,
virtual exploration capabilities. When an object
is drawn in its 2-D window, the program
simultaneously displays a 3-D representation
in an adjacent window. Using a mouse, viewers
can navigate through each window at will, walking
through the models that they've created.
Effective WalkThrough applications have included
remodeling interiors, laying out factory floor
designs, planning trade show booths, designing
theater sets, storyboarding films, creating
product displays and animating client
presentations. The program requires an
IBM PC or compatible with a 386 or later
processor, 4MB of RAM, a VGA monitor and
Microsoft Windows version 3.1 or later.
Founded in 1990, Virtus Corp. is based in
Cary, N.C. The company's 3-D drawing and
visualization technology has been employed
in the development of major motion pictures
including "The Abyss" and "The Firm," and
is used throughout the world by architects,
set designers, interior designers, marketing
consultants and other creative professionals
The first Virtus product, Virtus WalkThrough
for the Macintosh, won MacUser Magazine's
coveted "Breakthrough Product of the Year"
award upon its release in 1990. The company's
newest product, Virtus VR, is now available
for Macs. Virtus VR for Windows will ship in
December. This program is a fun and affordable
drag-and-drop program that allows users to
create and explore 3-D worlds. It ships with
various galleries of objects that can be
added to new worlds, and with several
pre-built scenes including Dealey Plaza
on that fateful day in Dallas.
Privately held, Virtus is backed by
Motorola Inc.'s New Enterprises Division,
author Tom Clancy, filmmaker Michael Backes
and others. The company has emerged as a
