  17. 1. What is iCal?

  20.   iCal is a web-based calendar that can be used to show meetings,
  21.   events, or other schedules. Your calendars can be viewed, edited,
  22.   and administered totally through the web. iCal is build for
  23.   thin-clients, so you access your calendar without any plug-ins 
  24.   orjava interpreters.
  25.  
  26.   iCal is a new type of application; built exclusively for the web.
  27.   The program comes with a built in web server that allows
  28.   for immediate access by anyone running a web browser.

  30. 2. What is new in 2.0?
  31. ----------------------
  32.  
  33.   There are a number of new features provided with the 2.0 release.
  34.  
  35.   a. The addition of new event types: Duration and Periodic.  This 
  36.      allows you to easily display events such as weekly meetings
  37.      or vacations
  38.   b. You can now view your calendar by year, month, week, or day, 
  39.      in either a block display or a list display
  40.   c. The text color and background color of events can be easily
  41.      changed
  42.   d. You can now publish your calendar to a HTML files that can be
  43.      uploaded to existing web servers

  45. 3. Installation
  46. ----------------

  48.     ZIP file Install:
  49.     If you have downloaded a ZIP, or self extracting archive from an online
  50.     service you will need to unpack the files to a temporary directory. Run
  51.     Add/Remove Programs for the Control Panel. Use Browse to locate the
  52.     Setup program.
  53.   
  54.     The Setup program properly installs iCal v 2.0 into the
  55.     Windows 95 and NT Registry.  This allows you to use the Uninstall 
  56.     feature to remove all traces of the program. This will not remove any 
  57.     calendar files you may have created.

  60. 4. Getting Started
  61. ---------------------
  62.   After installing iCal 2.0 here are the quick steps needed to demonstrate
  63.   the program.
  64.   
  65.   a. Bring up your web browser
  66.  
  67.   b. From your web browser enter the location: http://localhost for the
  68.      Netsite or Address to be opened.
  69.      
  70.   These two steps should bring up the iCal online Tutorial. From here you
  71.   can learn about the powerful feature of iCal and begin creating your own
  72.   calendars for personal use or for serving on your Intranet or even the 
  73.   Internet.

  75.   .... By Golly if you can perform the two steps above, we think you 
  76.   will be very impressed!

  78. 5. Troubleshooting
  79. ---------------------

  81. If you are unable to see the tutorial or your calendar through your
  82. browser, here are some things to check:
  83.  
  84.   On some computers with dial-up access to the Internet, you
  85.   may get no respone when you type in the URL http://localhost. 
  86.   Should this happen, try first connecting to the Internet, and 
  87.   then re-trying the above URL. This quite often occurs with IE 3.0.
  88.  
  89.   If you have an existing web server (such as Microsoft IIS Server)
  90.   running on your computer, you will have to change the Port setting
  91.   in iCal's Listener tab.  Try using a higher number such as 82 or 85.
  92.   Then, in your browser, you will need to type in:  http://localhost:82
  93.   (or change the 82 to match what you typed for iCal's port number)
  94.  
  95.   If you are in an Intranet that uses a proxy server you will 
  96.   likely need to make some settings to your browser. The method
  97.   for doing this varies depending on your browser.

  99.   For Netscape Communicator 4.0 you would
  100.   1) Select Edit/preferences from the menu
  101.   2) click advanced
  102.   3) click on Proxies
  103.   4) The Manual Proxy configuration will check. Click on the
  104.      view... button.
  105.   5) In the "Exceptions" add the IP address of your machine,
  106.      or the remote machine if iCal is running on another system.

  108.   For IE4.0 you would
  109.   1) Select view/Internet Options... from the menu
  110.   2) click the Connection Tab
  111.   3) Under Proxy Server click the Advanced button
  112.   4) In the "Exceptions" add the IP address of your machine,
  113.      or the remote machine if iCal is running on another system.

  117. 6. Why Register?

  120.   The Demo version of iCal is limited to 10 events per month and
  121.   only one calendars.
  122.  
  123.   * The individual registration has unlimited events per month.
  124.     The professional registration has unlimited events per month, and
  125.     also lets you have any number of calendars.
  126.  
  127.   * You will be entitled to six months of free upgrades.

  133.   So how do you get a registered version of iCal? Simple:

  135.   METHOD 1:
  136.      Purchase online from a secure web page. This registration form can
  137.      be found from the URL: http://www.brownbearsw.com/ical/  Great
  138.      care is taken to ensure the security and privacy of any information
  139.      transferred in this fashion. After process your order you will
  140.      be emailed a key code to fully enable your version of the software.
  141.  
  142.      This is by far the fastest and most efficient way to order. However,
  143.      it is recognized that some are uncomfortable commiting their
  144.      credit card to Internet transfer.

  146.   METHOD 2:
  147.      Send either $35 (individual) or $185 (professional) plus $5 shipping 
  148.      and handling ($10 for international shipping and handling) along with
