Important, please read this first!
----------------------------------
If you have downloaded, or received Visual Computer Dictionary Plus files
in zipped format (three files VCDP_01.ZIP, VCDP_02.ZIP and VCDP_03.ZIP)
you must decompress the files into an empty subdirectory on a hard disk,
change to that subdirectory, and run the installation program INSTALL.EXE.
This will create the necessary subdirectories and assign the files
accordingly. If the installation is successful, a message will confirm
this at the end of the installation program.
INTRODUCTION:
------------
The quick installation instructions will help you install and start using
the Visual Computer Dictionary Plus as quickly as possible. The program
is easily installed just by following a few simple instructions.
To navigate and to use Visual Computer Dictionary Plus is also very easy
and fast. Just by pointing and clicking the left mouse button on various
buttons takes you to any desired location instantly. Please read the
following installation instructions carefully and you will be up and
running Visual Computer Dictionary Plus in no time.
1 ...Installing Visual Computer Dictionary Plus
------------------------------------------
(Floppy disk recipients only; BBS downloaders see above.)
The following instructions assume your hard disk is Drive C and your floppy
disk is in Drive A. If you have a different configuration, please substitute
your drive letters.
* Insert disk no. 1 into the floppy drive A.
* Type A: and press ENTER at the DOS prompt to switch over to
drive A, which then becomes the active drive.
* Type INSTALL and press ENTER. This will bring up a small
informative message that shows the installation procedure.
Type INSTALL C A (this tells the computer to install the
program on hard drive C from floppy drive A) and press ENTER.
* The installation process will start and all the files will
decompress automatically into their proper directories.
You will be prompted to insert disk no. 2 and disk no. 3 into
the floppy drive and to press any key to continue. After
installation is completed, you will be asked to insert
disk no. 1 again into the floppy drive and press ENTER.
* This will finish the installation process and a short message
informs you that the installation is completed and that you can
start the Visual Computer Dictionary Plus program.
2 ...Starting Visual Computer Dictionary Plus
----------------------------------------
Visual Computer Dictionary Plus is designed to make navigation through the
program simple and as easy as possible. All you need to move quickly from
definition to definition is point and click the left mouse button to go
forward and the right mouse button to go back. Of course you can navigate
easily by using the keyboard, but using the mouse to navigate around
is the easiest way to go.
* Type VDICTION and press ENTER in the VDICTION directory. This
starts the program and you will see a short message and
information screen that stays visible for about five seconds
after which the initial screen appears.
* From this intial screen you can use a mouse to activate individual
buttons. The buttons are "About", "Credits", "Help", "Exit" and
"The Visual Computer Dictionary +." Clicking the left mouse
button on any one of these buttons activates additional actions.
You can also use the TAB key to highlight individual buttons
and press the ENTER or F1 keys to activate the actions.
* You should read the information contained in the "About",
"Credits" and "Help" screens, because it shows you related
information. "Help" screen explains the navigational methods
you need to know. The "Exit" button takes you out of the
program back to the DOS prompt.
3 ...Using and Navigating in Visual Computer Dictionary Plus.
-------------------------------------------------------
You can start using Visual Computer Dictionary Plus by simply clicking the
left mouse button on "The Visual Computer Dictionary Plus" button (it says
"Click here to begin"). You can also press the TAB key to highlight this
button and then press the F1 or ENTER key to start the action.
* After you click on "The Visual Computer Dictionary Plus" button,
the Visual Computer Dictionary Index screen appears. When you
move the mouse pointer around this screen you will notice that
the mouse pointer changes from an arrow to a pointing hand.
Every time your mouse pointer changes to a pointing hand, it
indicates a link that can be activated.
* Click on any one of the buttons that display letters of the
alphabet and it will open an Index List screen. The Index List
screen shows individual definitions that start with the letter
you selected. For example, clicking the left mouse button when
the pointing hand is on the button with the letter C opens an
Index List that displays all Visual Computer Dictionary Plus
definitions that start with the letter C.
* Clicking the left mouse button on any word, for example the word
"Capture", opens the screen that displays the definition of the
word "Capture" and shows its related picture. Additional buttons
become available to you, so you can access these functions
directly from the definition screen. Clicking the right mouse
button takes you back to the Index List.
* You can also use keyboard by pressing TAB or SHIFT TAB to
highlight buttons and then press the F1 or ENTER keys to activate
those buttons. Pressing ESC key takes you back step by step
in reverse order.
* You can access "Exit", "Help" and "Return to Main Index" from
anywhere in the program. Clicking on the "Exit" button anywhere
inside of the program takes you back to the initial screen. This
way you can easily come back if you change your mind. Only while
you are at the initial screen, clicking the "Exit" button
terminates the program.
* Clicking the left mouse button on the "Acronyms", "Symbols"
and "DOS Commands" buttons activates additional features available
in Visual Computer Dictionary Plus. Acronyms are contained in
a seperate section for easy and quick access. A small keyboard
provides easy display and access to individual acronyms.
* Some definitions, when they exceed a window's format, may be
scrolled up and down by either using the mouse to click on the
page up and page down buttons, or by using the page up and
page down keys on the keyboard. These buttons become available
only if the text overflows the window that contains the
definition text.
* Clicking the "Symbols" button opens up a list of basic symbols
that you can individually access, again by clicking on any one
of the symbols. This also applies to the "DOS Commands" button.
The "DOS Commands" button opens a special display screen that
makes access to any DOS command very simple.
* Click on any button that shows the letters of the alphabet and
the list of DOS commands that start with the letter you selected
appears. Once again, clicking the selected word opens a screen
that explains the DOS command you have selected.
* DOS commands that are part of Visual Computer Dictionary Plus
are commands that relate to all versions of DOS up to version
6.2 and are meant to quickly explain individual commands without
going into too much detail. If you need detailed information
on any of the DOS commands, please refer to a DOS manual.
4 ...Searching for definitions in Visual Computer Dictionary Plus
------------------------------------------------------------
Searching in Visual Computer Dictionary Plus for words or definitions is
a very easy and simple task. Text search is used to search individual words
or definitions in each of the available listings. Searches may be conducted
across all topics. The searched word is then displayed and highlighted for
you to access or you can continue to search for next occurence.
* Text searches may be accessed anywhere in the program. You can
either click the left mouse button on the "Search" button or press
the [ALT] + [S] key combination on your keyboard to open up a
search text window. Type in the word you wish to access. For
example, typing "notebook" while you are in the Main Index List
and pressing ENTER or clicking the "Search Next" button will
take you to the word "notebook".
* At this point, you can close the text search window by clicking
on the "Close" button and then click on the word "notebook" to
access that definition.
* This is all you need to access everything in the dictionary.
If you wish to find out more, please read the help screen.
