VERBMASTER: THE AID TO LEARNING FOREIGN VERBS
FRENCH MODULE
by and (c) Nigel Caplan, 1995.
***** GrammarText *****
***** The PAST HISTORIC Tense *****
Checklist: GCSE - Not needed
A Level - Recognition only - not needed in writing
- 1 - ===== Use =====
The Past Historic (le passé simple) is a LITERARY tense, which means it is
NEVER used in spoken or colloquial French. It is, however, common in novels,
as a narrative tense, indicating the action that happened next. It
translates ONLY the English construction:
* I watched.
(ie the construction 'I have watched' cannot take the Past Historic - use
the perfect instead.)
- 2 - ===== Formation =====
Regular verbs: have a look at the standard conjugations of -er / -ir / -re
verbs from the file 'Regulars'.
Irregular verbs: The irregular verbs do look very irregular! Note especially
the very irregular conjugations of 'avoir' and 'être': j'eus and je fus, &c.
