  16. The perfect tense translates the following English past tenses:
  17.  
  18.      * I watched
  19.      * I have watched
  20.      * I did watch
  21.      * I was watching
  22.      * I used to watch
  23.  
  24. The perfect and imperfect tenses have the same meaning in German;
  25. generally, the perfect tense is used in speech and the imperfect in
  26. writing and stylistically you should be consistent. Note that 'haben',
  27. 'sein' and the modal verbs are not usually used in the perfect tense,
  28. even in speech.

  37. The perfect tense is a COMPOUND tense, this means it has two parts:
  38.  
  39.      * The PRESENT tense of 'haben' or 'sein' (the AUXILLIARY verb)
  40.      * The PAST PARTICIPLE.
  41.  
  42. The past participle of regular verbs is formed by taking the stem and
  43. adding 'ge-' to the beginning and '-t' to the end.
  44.  
  45. The past participle of irregular verbs has to be learnt - sorry! As with
  46. most tenses, there are patterns. Note that you can spot irregular verbs
  47. as their past participles don't have a 't' at the end.

  49. You also need to decide which auxilliary verb to use; the rule is basically
  50. that you use 'haben' for all verbs except the so-called verbs of motion or
  51. change of state.

  57. The impersonal construction for 'I like it' is not included in VerbMaster
  58. because it only exists in the third person:
