- INTRODUCTION
-
- Description/Objective
-
- In 1-Player mode, Hoverski is a racing game in which the player must
- complete each track without running out of fuel. The game consists
- of 57 tracks divided into 6 leagues. The tracks consist of many
- different types of walls and hazards. The player begins each track with
- a certain amount of fuel, but most tracks require the player to gain
- additional fuel and/or improve his/her vehicle. Gaining fuel can be
- accomplished in one of two ways: performing stunts in the air or picking
- up items. There are also items that upgrade the Hoverski. In addition,
- there is a training mode and two 2-Player modes (see below).
-
- Running the Game
-
- We recommend playing the game on at least a 486 with a VESA local
- bus (VLB) video card. However, for improved gameplay, we recommend a
- Pentium 90 with a compatible sound card. For optimal gameplay, use a
- Sound Blaster AWE 32, a Gravis Ultrasound Classic, or a better sound
- card.
-
- Hoverski runs under DOS and Windows 95. Because Windows 95 may cause
- video slowdown and decreased sound compatibilty, you may want to try
- Restarting to MS-DOS Mode (found under Shut Down in the Start menu)
- rather than running the game directly from Windows 95. Caches (such
- as SmartDrive) generally improve performance as well.
-
-
- MENUS
-
- Getting Around
-
- The Hoverski menu system consists of a display area on the right hand
- side in which menus or information is shown and a set of buttons on the
- left that are used to select the current menu. The player moves a yellow
- highlight to select a menu or to select options within that menu.
-
- The menus can be navigated using the gamepad or the keyboard. To switch
- between the left and right hand sides of the screen, use the left and
- right keys or the gamepad directional pad (the Tab key also works).
- To select certain options, use Enter or a gamepad button.
-
- Options
-
- Move the highlight to one of the arrows and activate it to scroll
- through the various options.
-
- Game Mode - 1-Player, Training, 2-Player, and 2-Player Comp. 1-Player
- mode is described in the Introduction. In training mode, the player
- can select from any track and is not constrained by fuel; tracks can
- not be completed in training mode. In 2-Player mode, the players use
- unlimited fuel to compete for bonuses on any of the available tracks.
- In 2-Player Comp mode, the players compete for bonuses by racing each
- track in a particular league.
- (See In-Game Help for complete descriptions of all modes).
-
- Skill Level - Easy, Normal and Advanced. In Easy and Normal modes there
- are no additional environmental hazards, but in Advanced mode there
- is wind, fog/darkness, and turrets which drain the player's fuel when
- they shoot the Hoverski. Also, in Easy mode, the player is given
- extra fuel.
-
- Music Select - Random or Individual Songs. Random is default, but the
- player can choose a particular song to listen to.
-
- SFX & Music Volume - Use these sliders to adjust volume balance.
-
- Input Select - Select gamepad or keyboard for each player. If 2-Player
- mode is selected, only one player can use the gamepad.
-
- Help
-
- The Help menu provides descriptions of various aspects of how to play
- the game.
-
- Loading/Starting a Game
-
- There are four slots in which to save games. To start a game, select a
- slot that says 'new game' and enter your name. Your progress will only
- be saved when you complete a league. Whenever you start a new game, the
- Quick Help screen will appear. It is important to read this screen. To
- begin playing, go to the Track menu and select a league and a track if
- necessary. To load an existing save game, return to the Load menu and
- select the corresponding slot.
-
- Records
-
- The Records menu contains the top five lap times for each track and the
- points earned on those laps. To view the records for a track, first
- select a league and then choose a track. To view the map for that track,
- use the Map/Records toggle button.
-
-
- GAMEPLAY
-
- Controls/Tips
-
- For a description of gameplay controls and tips to improve play, refer
- to the Help menu.
-
- Environment
-
- Items
-
- Fuel Bonuses
-
- Fuel Bonuses come in 500 and 800 point packages. For every 100
- points gained, 1 unit of fuel is added to the player's existing
- supply.
-
- Vehicle Upgrades
-
- There are two vehicle upgrades the player can pick up: Top Speed
- and Grip. The Top Speed item increases the Hoverski's engine
- power. The Grip item decreases the amount the Hoverski skids as
- well as increases the Hoverski's turning rate in the air (which
- allows for better stunts). The vehicle upgrades only last for the
- duration of the current race.
-
- Nitros
-
- The player is given a certain number of nitros at the beginning of
- each lap. The number varies from track to track (sometimes the
- player doesn't receive any nitros per lap). Also, single nitros
- can be picked up as items.
-
- Advanced Items
-
- There are two items that only appear in Advanced difficulty
- levels: Shield and Goggles. Shield makes the Hoverski temporarily
- invulnerable to bullets from turrets (see below). Goggles let the
- player see through darkness and fog temporarily (see below).
-
- Wind, Darkness, Fog and Turrets
-
- These environmental hazards are present only in the advanced
- skill level. There are two types of wind: single-direction and
- fluctuating. Single-direction wind pushes in one direction for
- the entire race, while fluctuating wind changes direction
- constantly. Darkness and fog reduce the player's visibility.
- Turrets shoot at you from the ends of checkpoints. Their bullets
- reduce the player's fuel supply each time they hit the Hoverski.
-
- Walls/Obstacles
-
- For a description of the different types of walls and obstacles, see
- the Help menu.
-

- TROUBLESHOOTING
-
- Problem: When I run the game, there's no sound.
-
- Solution: The game may not be able to autodetect your sound card. First,
- try running the setup program for your sound card and make sure
- your sound card's environment variables are set:
-
- e.g. SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 or
- SET ULTRASND=220,1,1,7,7
-
- If you aren't sure what your environment variables are, see your
- sound card manual for help. If that doesn't work, you may have a
- hardware conflict. See your sound card manual for information on
- fixing hardware conflicts. Or, you can disable sound by using
- the "nosound" command-line option:
-
- e.g. hover.exe nosound
-
-
- Problem: The game loads slowly.
-
- Solution: Try using a cache, such as SmartDrive. This may also help game
- performance.
-
-
- Problem: While playing, the screen stutters or the frame rate is low.
-
- Solution: A cache may help (see above), but the problem is probably due
- to a slow video card or processor. Also, Windows 95 may cause the
- screen to stutter. Try Restarting to MS-DOS Mode. You can also
- disable sound to increase performance. Use the "nosound"
- command-line option:
-
- e.g. hover.exe nosound
-
-
- Problem: I start the game, but the cursor (or the Hoverski) goes out of
- control without me touching anything.
-
- Solution: The game may have incorrectly calibrated your gamepad. Try
- restarting the game, and make sure not to hold down the
- directional pad.
-
-
- Problem: My mouse doesn't work!
-
- Solution: Sorry, Hoverski does not have mouse support.
