  11. Welcome to n-Track.
  12. This program will turn your computer in to a powerful multitrack recorder:
  13. all you need is a full duplex soundcard, Windows 95, a microphone and some
  14. free space on your hard drive.
  15. There are no limitations on what you can realize with this program:
  16. the most powerful feature is that the tracks (wave files) aren't mixed
  17. together in a sigle wave file and then played. The mixing process is done
  18. "on the fly": in this way you can alter the volume and pan settings while
  19. listening to your song or even while recording.
  20. Compose or record a MIDI file and use it as a base while recording the
  21. other tracks.
  22. You can also use your favourite wave editor (for example Goldwave) to add
  23. some effects on a particular track: you won't have no more the need of
  24. sophisticated and very expensive multieffects devices.
  25. You can add reverb, delay, chorus, flanging etc. via software, listen to the
  26. overall result, restore the original track (having made a backup copy
  27. brefore modifying it), make some other changes etc.

  29. The program has no theorical limitations on the number of tracks:
  30. with my Pentium 100, 32 megabytes of RAM and a quite slow hard drive, I can
  31. easily work with 4 tracks.

  33. To install n-Track: create a new directory, unzip the archive you've
  34. downloaded in it and create a new shortcut on your Start Menu to the
  35. file n-Track.exe.
  36.  
  37. Working with nTrack is easy: to start a new song, record the first track
  38. (usually the rithm base). 
  39. Once you have finished click on the stop button.
  40. You will notice that the filename of the track you've just recorded will
  41. appear on the list box. Select it and adjust the volume and pan settings (you
  42. can do so while listening to the track).
  43. Now you are ready to add a new track: click again on the record button, make
  44. sure you are ready to play and click on the OK button.
  45. While you are recording, notice the value that will appear near the "lag"
  46. writing on the window. Once you have finished recording the track, write this
  47. value in the preferences dialog box (accessible via the Options menu).
  48. This values represents the shift that occurs between the recorded track
  49. and the ones being played. If this value is < 0, write it positive in the
  50. preferences. When playing back, the program will shift all the tracks by this
  51. value against the first track. So always check that the first track (the
  52. upper one) that appears in the list box, is the first one that you have
  53. recorded. Anyway this is not a critical factor, because the lag value
  54. usually is some hundreds. To obtain the actual shift divide this
  55. value by the sampling frequency (typically 44100 hz).
  56. If the lag value oscillates too widely, it means that there is some problem
  57. and that the program may not work properly.
  58. Once you have finished your song save it via the File menu.
  59. The .sng file that the program will create will contain the mixing
  60. information and the compensation value.
  61. When recording, make sure that the recording level is adeguate:
  62. use a mixer to adjust the levels (creative mixer contains also a
  63. spectrum analyzer and a vu meter so you can verify if the levels
  64. are correct). If the rec level is too high you will notice distortion,
  65. while if the rec level is too low, the signal-to-noise ratio will be low.
  66. If the overall volume level is too low you can boost the volume of all
  67. tracks by using the boost slider, but always check that in the moments
  68. when the song is louder this boost doesn't introduce distortion.
  69. Writing in the "MIDI file" edit box the filename of a midi file,
  70. this will be played back in sync with all the other wav tracks.
  71. Make sure that you have selected the desired MIDI output device in
  72. the Multimedia/Midi sheet of the control panel.

  74. For Sound Blaster owners:
  75.         clicking the right mouse button on the creative mixer and then
  76.         selecting "Input-output settings", will allow you to set
  77.         the mic and line-in gain roughly (*1, *2, *4).
  78.         Make sure you have enabled the driver's full duplex support and
  79.         that you have disabled the stereo enhanchement feature.
  80.         When operating in full duplex, the sound quality you'll hear while
  81.         recording will be very poor. In fact the 16 bit audio samples are
  82.         truncated by the SB's driver to 8 bit. This is not a program's fault,
  83.         but a limitation of the hardware:
  84.         the Sound Blaster hardware can use only one 16 bit and one 8 bit
  85.         DMA channel at a time, so either the recorded data will be 8 bit (even
  86.         if the actual format is 16 bit) or the same will happen to the data being
  87.         played. I've obviously choosen to make the playing tracks sound worse
  88.         so the recorded one will be effectively 16 bit.
  89.         So when playing back all the tracks without recording the audio
  90.         quality will not be penalized.
  91.         After having checked the recording level, remember to turn off
  92.         the creative mixer's vu-meters: if you don't you'll get enourmous
  93.         lag times.

  95. Known Bugs:
  96. This program is an early beta: I have tested it only on a SB32 and an AWE32
  97. both Plug And Play.
  98. The only sample format is 16 bit. The 48000 Hz sampling frequency is not
  99. tested at all.
  100. Sometimes the left and right channel swap while playing. Don't know if
  101. it's a problem of the program or of the sound card driver.
  102.  
  103. Midi sync is still in development:
  104.         the midi filename will not be saved
  105.         and there isn't any indication on elapsed time.
  106.         The time slider has no effect on the midi track.
  107.
