Super GT FAQ for Beginners
By Mark Kim
Version 3.0
Last Update: 3December97
Release Date: 3December97
Driving games, no matter what platform, has always been Sega's
specialty. From the classic driving hit Turbo, to the deluxe cabinet
revolution of Hang-On and Out Run, to the technological wonders of Virtua
Racing, to the vicious life-like entertainment of Daytona USA, Indy 500, and
Manx TT Superbike, the name Sega has always been synonymous with Racing.
Now Yu Suzuki brings us the most expensive racing game ever yet:
Super GT. Produced under the supervision of the BPR Racing Organization and
promoted by many well-known companies around the world (such as Porsche and
Elf), Super GT has became the exotic art of all Yu Suzuki efforts. Super GT
features four expensive cars, Model 3 Power, real-time audio, and the VR
buttons shared with Daytona USA and Virtua Racing. Hiroko Hamano puts the
icing in its cake with life-like audio and music. Moving at 60fps, Super GT
has no equal.
Newer versions of this FAQ can be picked up at my website located at
http://verasnaship.simplenet.com/text, which is my FAQ Archive site.
Because Super GT was expensive to produce, it was necessary for Yu
Suzuki to use ads during the game. For example, you will see "Elf" on the
Porsche 911. Ads do help cover the expenses incurred through the game. I
hope this FAQ will help cover the troublesome spots in the game.
Originally, Super GT was supposed to be released as Daytona USA 2.
However, the use of International sport cars instead of American Stock Cars
has compelled Sega to think twice before calling it Scud Race/Super GT.
Also, Yu Suzuki developed this game under supervision of the BPR org., thus
creating a brand new racer utilizing new sport cars.
If you have any fixes or changes for this faq, please e-mail me at
verasnaship@earthling.net. Your help is needed to complete this strategy
list!!!
If you are a gamer who frequents home systems, Super GT won't reach
the home market. Sony has beaten Sega for the rights to use the Porsche Car
for a home video game, so Super GT will stay in the arcades.

BASICS
Braking: You may think that you must use one foot in order to brake and
throttle. This is false in Super GT. In order to drive efficiently, rest
your left foot on the brake, and place your right foot on the accelerator.
This way, you can throttle while braking. However, in certain instances, you
should not try to brake without releasing the pedal first. If possible, then
you can apply the right amount of brake, then turn the wheel, throttle up,
and turn the wheel at the opposite direction. Be careful when you do this
because you may have to deal with a spinout. I recommend that you use the
brake while throttling your first couple of times, and as your skills rise,
powerslide.
Shifting: You must know when to shift in Super GT. If you use Manual, it's
important to see the redline on the top-middle of the screen. When you
reach the redline, shift up. However, when you want to change gears to slow
down around corners, you should not downshift right away or you will lose
control. Never shift too early or you will lose speed. Therefore, when you
go around a hairpin, you should either release the pedal or hit the brake
hard, then downshift to the desired gear. You may have to deal with sliding
so be ready to countersteer.
Grass: Your worst enemy in Super GT is not the time limit, it's the patches
of grass strewn throughout the course. If for any reason you touch the grass
during the race, you will lose speed and you will also lose control, and
eventually you will spin-out. It's important not to touch the grass as you
are cutting the corners or powersliding.
Powersliding: I would not prefer sliding on your first few attempts, since
the nature of the slide will throw you out of control. If you want to slide,
then you reduce your speed to a reasonable measure, release the pedal a little
bit, bank the car to the direction you want to drift, hit the pedal hard,
then as you slide, you must counterbank the car IMMEDIATELY (bank AGAINST the
direction your car is fishtailing). While sliding, it's best to go half-
throttle, since you may be thrown off after the slide. Once the squealing of
the tires silences, try to keep the car floored on the straight line while
going full throttle once again.
Real Players Only: To play a Time Lap or Real Players Only game, hold the
start button while deciding on the drivetrain. Real Players Only can only
be activated when all players select it.
=============================================================================
VIEWPOINTS
Like Daytona USA and Virtua Racing, you can use the four VR buttons to change
your views during gameplay. You can either view the action inside the car,
inside the car with the hood, above the car, or above the car wide.
=============================================================================
THE CARS
Super GT features four different cars
Porsche 911:
(Top Speed: 210 AT, 215 MT)
The Porsche 911 is the easiest car to use in the game. It's small wheelbase
has the best handling and stability in the game, but falls short in overall
ratings. You won't get the fastest lap with the Porsche, but it's necessary
to use if you want to master courses such as the Classic Castle Course, where
the focus is concentrated on driving competency. Though the grip makes it
difficult to drift around bad turns, the Porsche won't spin out too much
during powerslides. This is a beginner's car.
=============================================================================
Ferrari F40
Engine: DOHC 32V 90Degree V8 Turbo Displacement(ci/cc): 367/2936
Horsepower: 478@7000rpm Torque (Approximate): 340@6000rpm
Drivetrain: 5-speed ZF Manual Ratio: 7.8:1
Curb Weight: 1100kg Top Speed, Real Life: 324kmh
Top Speeds, Super GT: 217mph AT, 224mph MT
Source: http://www.ferrari.com
=============================================================================
The Ferrari F40 is no longer in production (replaced by the F50), but the car
is still worth looking at. After all, the F40 provides a good balance of
speed and handling, but your countersteer time must increase because the long
wheelbase makes it possible to throw you out of control. Despite the long
wheelbase, sliding is acceptable to utilize by the expert driver. Once you
have mastered the art of drifting in Super GT, then choose the F40. The
balance of Speed and Handling makes the Ferrari suitable for all courses.
=============================================================================
Dodge Viper RT-10
Engine: OHV 20V V-10 with SMPI Displacement(liters): 8.0
Horsepower: 450@5200rpm Torque: 490@3700rpm
Drivetrain: 6-speed Manual Ratio: Unknown
Curb Weight: Unknown Top Speed, Real Life: 170mph
Top Speeds, Super GT: 211mph AT, 218mph MT
Source: http://www.4adodge.com
=============================================================================
Arguably Detroit's proudest creation yet, the Dodge Viper has the most torque
in the game. This gives the Viper great acceleration and crisp speed
recovery from heavy turns. Handling is surprising good, but top-speed and
stability leaves a lot to be desired. You should use the Viper at Mystery
Ruins and Classic Castle: These two courses are very technical: a lot of
shifting is required. However, with the massive torque in the engine, you
should be able to recover speed very quickly.
McLaren F1:
(Top Speed: 221 AT, 230 MT)
This is the fastest and the most expensive car in the world. Powered by a
BMW-built V12, the McLaren only gets four miles to a gallon--Not a car that
you want to commute. Think of the McLaren as the ultimate tool for Dolphin
Tunnel and Twilight Airport. Because of the 107-inch wheelbase, you should
try not to steer too hard with the McLaren, because if you do, then you will
spin out of control. Make sure that you slow down ahead of time before
sliding around bad corners, and immediately countersteer after the slide
begins, or you will lose control.
=============================================================================
DOLPHIN TUNNEL (4 Laps)
Difficulty: Beginner Number of Entries: 40
Course Focus: High Speed Ideal Cars: McLaren F1 and Ferrari F40
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Although Dolphin Tunnel should be easy, you will have to master the Submarine
Curve and the Surfing Turn if you want to have the best lap. I suggest you
to use the Ferrari F40 your first couple of times, then as your skill builds
up, switch to the McLaren. You may wish to use the Automatic in this course
(although Manual has better speeds). I can't use the Viper or the Porsche
because the emphasis here is on speed. Try to avoid any screw-ups here and
you should be able to reach the top three.
The Sega Saturn Twin CPU Tower and the Dream Big Bridge: Since this is a
beginner course, you start the race in full speed. Keep the car as straight
as possible to increase speed.
Whale Back: You can take this turn at top speed, but be sure not to touch
the dirt. Move from the Center of the track to the left to shave off some
time.
Enter the Dolphin Tunnel: Be prepared to encounter a jump after the Whale
Back. Keep the car running straight to avoid losing control.
Sea Wall: From the easy right and into the Sea Wall, you can go full speed.
Just make sure that you are not losing control, though.
Submarine Curve: Be prepared to slow down on this turn. You should go no
faster than 163mph here. Try not to go full throttle until after the curve.
You can slide here at the Submarine Curve, but since the turn happens so fast,
sliding may be dangerous here. Cut from the outside to reduce the severity
of the turn.
Surfing Turn: Watch out for the grass as you attempt to cut the apex. Do
not take this turn any faster than 156mph. You are welcome to slide, but when
you start sliding, immediately bank the wheel against the direction you are
turning, and do not go full throttle.
After the Surfing Turn: After the turn, you should start speed recovery here
to catch up with the competition. If you are sloppy with the Surfing Turn
slide, then you are not doing too hot.
=============================================================================
TWILIGHT AIRPORT (4 Laps)
Difficulty Level: Beginner Number of Entries: 40
Course Focus: High Speed Ideal Cars: Ferrari F40 and McLaren F1
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Twilight Airport is more intense than Dolphin Tunnel since there are two
straightaways long enough for any super car to reach its great speed.
It's always a good idea to keep the car running as straight as possible on
the two straightaways in order to maximize your speed. Although the Ferrari
and the McLaren can't reach the top possible speed, you can reach a reasonable
speed of 210+ if you can take caution on the Sunset Tower and the Sun's Edge.
The music should keep you in the racing mood. Manual Transmission should
suit you well, but Automatic should give you some control. Just make sure
you do not choose the Porsche or the Viper.
To Venus Straight: Since this is another beginner course, you start the race
at full speed.
First Curve: Be very careful of any player exiting from the pit when playing
Twilight Airport in multiplayer mode.
Sunset Tower Turn: Try to reduce your speed to no less than 158mph. Make
sure that you are going no faster than 171mph since this is a hairpin. Do
not go full throttle after the Sunset Tower Turn. It's possible to slide
at high speeds, and still recover after the Sunset Tower Turn. Just counter
bank the wheel after you start sliding.
New Crescent: You can take this turn at full speed. You can cut the apex,
but do not touch the grass. If necessary, you may have to reduce speed
slightly. If you want to go at least 180+mph, you should slide from the
Sunset Tower Turn (Release the pedal, and downshift to 3 at the Sunset Tower
Turn, then immediately slide right, shift back to 4, then begin to counter-
steer, and use half-throttle until you don't hear the squealing).
Midnight Curve: This easy left should be no problem. Full speed is OK here.
Try to cut the turn from the outside to maximize speed. Watch out for the
wall, though.
Hermes Straight: You should be keeping a straight line here to maximize
speed. When you see a sign alerting you of the Sun's Edge, release the pedal,
downshift to 3rd gear, slide your car gently, and as you slide, shift back to
4th gear, use half-throttle, and counter-steer immediately.
Sun's Edge: You must not bank the wheel too hard as you will be sliding
for too long. Just bank the car just right so you can avoid going on the left
side the the Twilight Airport Taxi Port. As always, do not go full throttle
until after passing the turn.
=============================================================================
MYSTERY RUINS (3 Laps)
Difficulty: Intermediate Number of Entries: 30
Course Focus: Semi-Technical Ideal Cars: Ferrari F40, Dodge Viper
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is where things begin to get hectic. You have some gruesome turns to
master in Mystery Ruins. While cutting the apex, keep this in mind: Never
touch the grass, this course is almost harder than Classic Castle just because
of the amount of grass it has.
The Salamander Temple: It's time to play with the big boys. No more rolling
start.
The Giant Steps: You can take this ess here at full speed.
Turn 3 and the Dragon Claw: Negotiate these two sharp corners by adjusting
your speed according to the sharpness of the turn. You should take on Turn 3
at no more than 183mph and the Dragon Claw at no more than 163mph. Try not
to slide on the Dragon Claw, because as you pass the first time extension,
you will have to deal with a jump and if your car is not straight, then you
lose control.
Dragon Fang: You can take the jump and the next ess at full speed. Just
make sure you keep the car as straight as possible on the jump.
Centaur Stock Farm: You may wish to slide here, but you must know how to cut
the apex from out-to-in. Otherwise, you should be going no faster than 145mph
on the Centaur Stock Farm. If you wish to slide, then make sure that you are
not going too fast, but just fishtail the car just right so you can recover
by the time you finish making the turn. Be sure not to go in the grass.
The Overcross: This is as close as a straightaway can get: Use it wisely.
Pearl Tear Curve: This turn is a killer. Make sure that you are not going
faster than 128mph here, as it's easy to get fooled here. You should speed
out if you think that you may have to go in the grass. A better name for this
turn is Hairpin.
Pegasus Curve: Use the Out-and-In technique to get your way here. Try not
to go faster than 145mph here. Do not go full throttle as it makes it easy
to go too fast. You can slide, but make sure you don't fishtail the car too
hard: it makes you lose control. Immediately bank against the direction
you are sliding, and don't accelerate after the turn.
Back into the Salamander Temple: If you went too fast, then you are going to
slam into a barrier really hard. Watch your speed at all times.
=============================================================================
CLASSIC CASTLE (3 Laps)
Difficulty: Advanced Number of Entries: 20
Course Focus: Technical Ideal Cars: Porsche 911 and Dodge Viper
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This Exotic Setting is definitely a master's course, with blind turns and
seemingly hard to maneuver corners. Don't expect to complete this course all
the time, though. Classic Castle centers your ability to be a competent
driver rather than on speed. Your main concerns will be at the Scorpion
Trail, the Cancer Bubble Ring, the Twin Ess when crossing the Gemini Towers,
and the Bull's Horn as you enter the Taurus Colosseum.
Aries Street: You will be starting the race in the same manner as with the
Mystery Ruins Course.
Capricorn Bent: You will encounter an easy right and an easy left just after
the Aries Street. Full speed is OK here.
Scorpio Bridge: By the time you get to the Scorpio Bridge, you should be
reducing your speed to no slower than 140mph. You should be going no faster
than 150mph here. If you want to slide, then reduce speed as you go on the
bridge, then start fishtailing the car, perform the slide at the Scorpion
Trail, immediately counterbank the steering wheel.
Scorpion Trail: You may go on the uneven surface without losing speed, but
if you went too fast, then you will slam into the wall. If you get into the
uneven surface, go back to the main surface to avoid hitting the tower.
Libra Courtyard and Pisces Pond: You can take the easy ess and the first time
extension without losing speed.
Virgo Arcades: Beware when you car wheelies. Keep a straight line at all
times.
Harp Hall: Lower your speed to about 128mph here, since you are about to go
into the Cancer Bubble Ring Next. Do not go full throttle after passing the
Cancer Bubble Ring. You may reduce your speed to 133mph here, but it's kinda
dangerous since you are going into the Cancer Bubble Ring Next.
Cancer Bubble Ring: Stay inside the semicircle and do not go full throttle
while passing the Cancer Bubble Ring. Accelerate after passing the Cancer
Bubble Ring. Do not go outside of the Bubble. You may slam into a barrier
if you miscalculate the Cancer Bubble Ring.
Turn 10: You can take on both the second Time Extension and this turn at
full throttle.
Twin Ess: Don't let the straight fool you. These curves are hairpin turns.
You will need to slow down if you want to get out of these turns clean. Try
to stay outside of the first turn, and try to cut the apex on the second turn.
Leo's Tunnel: After you pass the Twin Ess, the track narrows at Leo's Tunnel.
Bull's Horn: This is the worst turn in the whole game. As insurance, you can
hit one of the sharp right signs at your left and use the out-and-in technique
to reduce the severity of the turn. Reduce your speed to about 150mph.
Taurus Colosseum: If you wish to slide to pass the Bull's Horn, then you will
be going inside the grass here, and you must be careful because if the bull
hits you, you are out of luck.

How to suggest fixes:
I have read a message from this guy who thinks that I drive like Helen Keller.
He has used a lot of profanity when he suggested me to make fixes on the
Twilight Airport Section of this FAQ. You are always welcome to suggest any
fixes on my FAQ. However, I have established some rules when making fixes.
Here are the rules:
- Your subject must be Super GT FAQ Fix
