  7.   Just a few words before  the  article
  8. when I speak about Rap groups  I  don't
  9. talk about famous  rap  bands  but  all
  10. those unknow bands that appear  in  all
  11. our cities and that  consist  of  young
  12. people.

  15.    Hip Hop  and  Piracy is not the same
  16. thing.It's more than that... That's the
  17. same idea...
  18.     But one is  white  &  middle class,
  19. the other is proletarian and coloured.
  20.  Coding/Cracking scenes can be wild and
  21. collective like the Rap scene is...

  24. ]  1 -  NOTION OF GROUP and  A NEED FOR
  25. ]INDIVIDUAL RECOGNITION.
  26.  
  27.  In a society, which  is  known  to  be
  28. individualist,the B.BOYS and  the  demo
  29. makers   have  created  the  GROUP.   A
  30. collective  struturation   based   upon
  31. distribution of  the  fonctions  within
  32. the band.
  33.   A computer band has different members
  34. with differents tasks... There are some
  35. coders,graphists,swappers ...
  36.   and a Possee can have dancers,taggers
  37. rappers...
  38.   The  knowledge   of  each  members is
  39. optimised , in order to be better  than
  40. rivals. If  there's  no  leader in  the
  41. band  there  is  always a  "locomotive"
  42. in order to motivate the band.
  43.   Nevertheless  guests  can come in the
  44. band to do a  job. And  conversely  all
  45. the band  is  not necesary taking  part
  46. in a project,even  if  they  are  still
  47. in contact. (Mail,phone,modems...)

  50. ]   2 - THE NAMES ...
  51.  
  52.  If the names of the members of a  band
  53. can  often  be  found  in  a  scroller,
  54. rappers  often  spell  their  names  in
  55. their  songs   and   a  tagger   writes
  56. everywhere his pseudonym.
  57.   If  it is  easy to understand why the
  58. taggers   and   the   crackers   choose
  59. nicknames.  It  can  be  strange   that
  60. Rappers  or demo coders don't use their
  61. real names.
  62.  The names used are often inspired from
  63. movies,cartoons....
  64. ] LUKE SKYWALKER ,TERMINATOR X, MAD MAX,
  65. ]EAZY E,THE BLADE RUNNERS,ZIGGY STARDUST
  66. ]THE LORD,GARFIELD,DEE NASTY...

  68. [ With a pseudonym a new life begins.We
  69. [are independants from our family , our
  70. [origins,the laws...

  73. ]  3 - THE GROUP & HIS SPHERE

  75.   Once again , demos & hip hop have the
  76. same objectives.The band (by the way of
  77. his members )  must  be  associated  to
  78. an artistic feat. We try to impress our
  79. underworld with virtuosity as Dj , with
  80. his  madness  to  tag impossible place,
  81. with the maximum use of  a  68000. What
  82. is  looked  for, is  to be acknowledged
  83. by his little  scene. Nevertheless  the
  84. group is not a desert island;wars exist
  85. between bands, but  it  gives a kind of
  86. credibility   to  the  reality  of  the
  87. scene.  But  the enemies are nammed and
  88. very seldom fought. The  computer group
  89. nammed them "lamers"  and  the  hip hop
  90. movement "suckers".
  91.  There  are  2  ways  of  communication
  92. between  the bands , the 1st one is the
  93. "real contact" : Coding party, concert,
  94. sound system. And  the  second  is  the
  95. greetings, wich  can  be found on  some
  96. songs,sleeve,scrollers...
  97.   To find his name in a greetings list,
  98. show  you are involved in the movement,
  99. and that  you are respected. It's a bit
  100. also like associating  his  own work to
  101. the nammed persons.It looks like a name
  102. sampling (!?).
  103.      However  each  movement  has   its
  104. specificities. The computer bands  have
  105. an european scene  and  are  in contact
  106. with many bands. But frontiers  between
  107. band disapeared, and  German,swedish or
  108. French demos are the same  and  we  all
  109. are trying  to  speak  english. Whereas
  110. the  rap  movement  is  very  different
  111. according  to  their  original country,
  112. languages,ethnies,political ideas...

  115. ]  4 - FEAR OF EMPTY
  116.  
  117.  Fear of future ? Refuse of reality. If
  118. we (young people) don't hate the  empty
  119. we like very much the full.Rappers  let
  120. the radio playing all day long, Taggers
  121. fill all the  surfaces up. ( the  walls
  122. but also his bedroom,exercice books...)
  123.    A  good  rap may  be very noisy like
  124. public enemy; there's  no space for any
  125. other sound. Moreover  a  rap record is
  126. most of the time filled up with remixes
  127. stories,greets...
  128.  The  packers do menus without any free
  129. sectors, and the coders use 100 percent
  130. of the capcity  of their microprocesor.

  133. ]  5 - A NEW DESIGN

  135. [ If many people don't like to listen to
  136. [rap, it isn't because 90 per 100 of the
  137. [rap   records  aren't  interesting  but
  138. [because it can  be  judged  like  other
  139. [music. It  must be appreciated with his
  140. [own criterions. That's  the  same thing
  141. [with demos.
  142.      Most  people   find   demos   very
  143. boring  and  can't  enjoy  them because
  144. they don't know  what  is  hard  to do.

  146.  The texts/lyrics are also important in
  147. the two movements. And  both have their
  148. jargon: The crackers use  "GFX", "ZAK",
  149. "LAMERS", "WRAP"...  The rappers  "YO",
  150. "DOPE","SUCKER"...

  153. ]  6 - REBELS WITHOUT A PAUSE

  155. [  As there are cool/soft rappers,& nice
  156. [demo  coders , the  scenes  also   have
  157. [crackers & radical rappers.

  159.  Afrocentrism; "Fight the power";"Don't
  160. believe the hype" are some of the motos
  161. of harcore rap bands.

  163.  Piracy has also his radical boys, thus
  164. in Germany (CCC), USA  and  in  Holland
  165. hackers ask for  the  right  to look at
  166. some protected datas on some top secret
  167. boards , or   revolt  against  the  so-
  168. high-prices of softwares.

  171. ]if you tag, or  if  you simply have  an
  172. ]opinion about my article, please  write
  173. ]us. Express  us  why you are in a group
  174. ]( even on ST ). Are  you  conscious  to
  175. ]keep  in  the   background   from   our
  176. ]society , your  family...?     Are  you
  177. ]conscious  to  take  part  in something
  178. ]you can't share with most people ?
