  46.  
  47.         This file explains how to setup and to configure the ELSA
  48.         Windows NT driver software for your graphics board.
  49.  
  50. 1.1     Requirements
  51.  
  52.         This driver software only runs on ELSA AGP bus graphics
  53.         boards.
  54.

  57.         For more information on configuring installed ELSA graphics
  58.         drivers, refer to the Windows Help or to the help files to
  59.         ELSA Utilities.

  64. 2       Installation
  65.  
  66.         NOTE:   This driver was designed for full functionality
  67.         under Windows NT 4.0 only!
  68.  
  69.         There are several ways to install an ELSA graphics driver:
  70.         - Automatic installation by ELSA Setup Utility  (2.1)
  71.         - Via the Windows dialog "display properties"   (2.2)
  72.         - During the NT Windows 4.0 installation        (2.3)
  73.  
  74. 2.1     Automatic installation by ELSA Setup Utility
  75.  
  76.         First of all, start the Windows NT. To run SETUP.EXE then,
  77.         you can either double click on it in the Microsoft
  78.         Explorer or choose "Run..." in the "Start" menu.
  79.  
  80.         NOTE: Please close all programs before running Setup - 
  81.               especially older ELSA utilities.

  83. 2.1.1   Further Hints and Configuration

  85. 2.2     Manual Installation
  86.  
  87. 2.2.1   Manual Installation of the graphics driver
  88.  
  89.         NOTE:   First install the Standard-VGA driver, then shut
  90.         down your computer and exchange the graphics board.
  91.  
  92.         Click on the symbol "Control Panel" in the
  93.         Startmenu/Settings or on the desktop with the right mouse
  94.         button and select "Properties"in the pop-up menu. Select
  95.         here "Desplay" (DISPLAY.CPL) and, under the tab "Settings",
  96.         click on the key "Change configuration..." to modify the
  97.         display settings.
  98.  
  99.         Selecting the ELSA graphics board by selecting "Change..."
  100.         in the following dialog. The dialog box "Select graphics
  101.         board" appears with a selection of available drivers (under
  102.         "Model").
  103.  
  104.         Select the key "Other..."in the lower right-hand of the
  105.         dialog box. The dialog "Install from disk" appears with an
  106.         indication of path or floppy drive ("A:\"). Change the
  107.         entry to the path where you find the driver files for your
  108.         board (e.g."D:\GLoria\XXL\WINNT40") and confirm with
  109.         "Continue". Now a list of ELSA graphics drivers is
  110.         displayed. Select the driver for your board. Confirm the
  111.         dialog. The driver is installed after confirming the
  112.         warning that a third-party driver will be installed. Close
  113.         all display windows.
  114.  
  115.         NOTE: With Windows NT 4.0, graphics drivers cannot be
  116.         loaded dynamically.
  117.  
  118.         To activate the ELSA driver the computer has to be
  119.         restarted. Please press >>Yes<< in the relevant dialog.
  120.         The system will reboot and the initial installation is
  121.         finished.
  122.  
  123.         The initial installation of ELSA drivers for Microsoft
  124.         Windows NT 4.0 installs the driver in a resolution of
  125.         640*480 pixel at 60Hz refresh.
  126.  
  127.         NOTE:   With the installation of the Windows NT 4.0 driver,
  128.         the ELSA OpenGL driver is automatically installed .

  130. 2.2.2   Manual Installation of ELSA Utilities
  131.  
  132.         The ELSA utilities can be easily installed from the
  133.         Explorer by clicking on the appropriate .INF file with the
  134.         right mouse button (see 2) and then selecting "Install...".
  135.  
  136.         NOTE: The utilities can be uninstalled in the Control Panel
  137.         under "Software", "Install/Uninstall...".
  138.  
  139. 2.3     Setup During System Installation
  140.  
  141.         NOTE: You will need installation floppy disks  (see 2.4).
  142.  
  143.         With a first-time or new installation of Windows NT, the
  144.         identification of hardware and software components is
  145.         followed by the query if you wish to accept the settings
  146.         selected by Windows NT. DO NOT press ENTER!
  147.         Move the highlight to "Display:". Choose here "Other"
  148.         (requires disk provided by a hardware manufacturer). Insert
  149.         disk 1 and select the driver for your graphics board.
  150.         Continue the installation following all instructions.
  151.  
  152.         After restarting, Windows NT reboots in graphics mode.
  153.  
  154.         NOTE: the ELSA utilities must be subsequently installed
  155.         manually (section 3.1). With the installation of the
  156.         Windows NT 4.0 driver, the ELSA OpenGL driver is not
  157.         automatically installed.

  159. 2.4     Making Installation Disks
  160.  
  161.         To create installation disks for the ELSA graphics driver
  162.         you will need four empty floppy disks labeled 
  163.         "ELSA Windows NT 4.0 DISK 1", 
  164.         "ELSA Windows NT 4.0 DISK 2",
  165.         "ELSA Windows NT 4.0 DISK 3" and
  166.         "ELSA Windows NT 4.0 DISK 4".
  167.  
  168.         Please note that not all listed files are required and some
  169.         files may have different filename extensions (e.g.
  170.         "EGLXLD.dl_" instead of "EGLXLD.dll").

  237. 2.5     Testing the Installation and Determining the Driver Version
  238.         Number

  240. 2.5.1   Testing the Installation
  241.  
  242.         Select from the Start menu "Settings" and in the Control
  243.         Panel click on "Display". Select the tab "Settings" and
  244.         there the key "Change configuration...". The following
  245.         dialog gives information of the manufacturer, the version
  246.         number and the current driver files.
  247.  
  248.         NOTE:   If you see "Version Information missing ", you did
  249.         not set US English as the system language. This problem
  250.         will appear in all non-American NT installations.
  251.  
  252. 2.5.2   Determining the Version Number of the Driver via the Driver
  253.         Files
  254.  
  255.         Use the Explorer to inspect the file properties for one of
  256.         the files EG*.SYS, EG*.DLL, or EMG*.DLL. The file EG*.SYS
  257.         can be found in the directory System32\Drivers and System32
  258.         of your Windows NT, the files EG*.DLL and EMG*.DLL in the
  259.         System32\index.

  264. 3       Additional Configuration Options
  265.  
  266. 3.1     How to Install and to Configure the Driver
  267.  
  268.         If necessary, all tools can be manually installed
  269.         afterwards. To do this, change to the corresponding tool
  270.         subdirectory (e.g. i386\GLSET), click with the right mouse
  271.         button on the ".INF" file and select the entry "Install"
  272.         from the context menu. After a restart the tools are fully
  273.         installed.
  274.  
  275.         There follows a description of all the possible settings of
  276.         the ELSA graphics driver for Windows NT and of the ELSA
  277.         utilities.
  278.  
  279. 3.1.1   Application Settings
  280.  
  281.         The ELSA Application Settings property page allows you to
  282.         configure the 3D options on ELSA GLoria graphics boards.
  283.         You will find the settings under "Start menu/Control
  284.         Panel/Display". You also will find a detailed description
  285.         by clicking the Help key.
  286.  
  287. 3.2     ELSA POWERlib
  288.  
  289.         ELSA offers the toolkit POWERlib as an option for the
  290.         programmer. This is for creating your own applications
  291.         which use ELSA graphics boards for graphical output. This
  292.         tool is available for Windows NT.
  293.  
  294.

  297. 4       Known Problems
  298.  
  299.         - If the application under OpenGL requests "Double
  300.           Buffering" and the GLoria cannot realize it, software
  301.           emulation will be installed automatically.
  302.           To force hardware OpenGL you have to disable double
  303.           buffering in your application!
  304.  
  305.         - The driver cannot run on a system where a port COM4 is
  306.           installed.
  307.  
  308.         - It is possible that some computers need a very long time
  309.           to boot.
  310.  
  311.         - IDEAS Master Series 6: Enabling the "Caps" results in
  312.           display errors in shades.
  313.  
  314.         - SolidWorks98: Bad refresh problems may occurr using 15bpp
  315.           resolutions
  316.  
  317.         - N-World 3.2: Buttons and menues are not displayed
  318.           correctly
  319.  
  320.         - Stereo capabilities are not yet supported
  321.  
  322.         - Softimage: Running an animation in fastplayback-mode in 
  323.           one or more shaded views will cause flickering in these 
  324.           views. Activate fastplayback in one wireframe view to 
  325.           solve the problem. You also can completly turn of the 
  326.           problem by deactivating the pageflip mechanism (force 
  327.           buffer blit) but this will result in prefomance loss!
