(1) INSTALLATION & MACHINE REQUIREMENTS
This is the 3Dfx upgrade to the original European version
of I-War. It will not run unless it is installed
over an installation of the original I-War.
The Upgrade is Multilingual. English, French and German
are supported.
The upgrade is provided in WinZip self-extracting format.
To install:
1) Double click on the I-War_3Dfx_upgrade.exe
2) Follow the on-screen instructions.
3) When prompted for the installation path,
click UNZIP if the pathname correctly shows where
you originally installed I-War.
( Normally C:\Program Files\I-War\ )
If the path is not correct, then enter the pathname
where I-War is installed, then click UNZIP.
4) That's it!

DirectX5 compatible Sound card
Quad speed CD-ROM drive

DirectX5 or later installed
Several configuration files for popular joystick types have
been included in the "joysticks" folder. These are
unsupported and are provided for your convenience only.
I-War 3Dfx has been fully tested on both Windows 95
and Windows 98.
------------------------------------------------------
(2) 3DFX GLIDE
In 3Dfx mode I-War 3Dfx uses 3Dfx Glide drivers.
Glide version 2.43 (Voodoo1) or 2.5 or later (Voodoo2)
must be installed for the game to run.
Glide 2.43 is supplied with the drivers for some 3Dfx
Voodoo1 cards. If you have a Voodoo1 card and glide isn't
installed on your PC, you can download it from the 3Dfx
web site: http://www.3dfx.com, or obtain it from your
3Dfx card manufacturer.
Glide 2.5 is integrated with Voodoo2 card drivers, and so
should be automatically included when your Voodoo2
drivers are installed.
-------------------------------------------------------
(3) SCREEN MODES SUPPORTED
I-War 3Dfx supports two different display
resolutions, 640x480 and 800x600. 640x480 is the only
mode available for the Software and 3Dfx Voodoo1
versions.
800x600 mode is specific to Voodoo2 cards, and won't work
in Software or Voodoo1 mode. 640x480 is also available
for Voodoo2 cards, by selecting the Voodoo1 shortcut.
We regret that Voodoo2 SLI mode and 1024x768 resolution
is not supported.
Note that there will be a border around some screens and
the in-game movies in Voodoo2 800x600 mode. This is normal.
-------------------------------------------------------
(4) UNINSTALLATION ISSUES
To uninstall the game select the uninstall icon in the Start Menu
or go to the Add/Remove Programs option in Control Panel, select
I-War and click Add/Remove.
The uninstallation process will leave many files behind. This
is normal as these are the new files installed for the upgrade.
You can safely delete all the remaining I-War files, though you
might wish to keep your save-game files you have created during
your sessions in I-War.
These are denoted as *.SAV files
You can either back these up or delete them as required. If you
intend to re-install I-War at a later date, be sure to
back them up as a fresh install will overwrite them.
-------------------------------------------------------
(5) THE GAME LAUNCHER
The I-War 3Dfx upgrade replaces the original game executable with a game
launcher menu. The menu allows you to launch the game in any of the
three graphics modes, and also allows you to choose the game's language.
You run the game launcher by selecting the original I-War shortcut
created during the original install.
-------------------------------------------------------
(6) CREATING A SHORTCUT
You can create a shortcut to run the game without the game launcher menu
if you wish.
To do this follow these steps:
1) Go to the Independence War installation directory - normally:
c:\program files\particle systems\independence war\
2) Right click on the file Game.exe, and select 'Create Shortcut' from the
menu. An Icon should appear called 'shortcut to Game.exe'
3) Drag the icon to a location on your desktop.
4) Right click on the icon and select 'properties' from the menu.
5) If you're running in 3Dfx mode add the commands -b -16 to the end of the
text box labelled 'target' (make sure that the commands are placed after
any quotation marks).
6) If you're running voodoo2 mode then add -800x600 after the other commands.
7) If you want to run the game in French or German add the commands -french or
-german to the target line.
8) click on OK
9) Double click on the icon to run the game.
You can rename the shortcut by clicking on the name and editing it.
-------------------------------------------------------
(7) DIFFERENCES FROM THE ORIGINAL I-WAR
The I-War 3Dfx upgrade is not just a 'patch' - Over 1300 files have been added,
and many others modified. Many improvements, big and small have been implemented.
Here's a summary of what's changed since the original version:
(a) 3Dfx Voodoo1 (640 x 480) and Voodoo2 (800 x 600) are now supported,
with many graphical enhancements including high detail ships,
shield effects, missile trails, new nebulas, and many others.
(b) Two modes of play are now available:
1) Simulation - the ship flies as described in the manual, and all
the features are available as in the original
I-War.
2) Arcade Mode - An easier flight mode, with the following changes:
- The ship flies where you point it, with virtually no drifting.
- Weapons are three times more powerful.
- Ripple fire mode is not available
- The Dreadnaught's systems never go off line.
- The following missions have extra or more powerful enemies:
WEP Advanced (Destroyer has stronger hull)
Salvage (More mines)
Evacuation (One extra enemy ship in each attack wave)
Wild Weasel (Extra enemy fighters)
At All Costs (Extra enemy corvettes)
- The following missions aren't available in Arcade mode:
Asteroids Dellox
Wep Advanced II
Surgery
The Precision Factor
Power Extreme
(c) New detail level options have been added.
(d) Many missions have been tweaked and tuned. See if you can spot
the differences.
(e) The VIEW HAT option now snaps the view in 90 degree angles.
(f) Hull strength indicator bar has been added to the top right of
the HUD.
(g) The damage system has been tweaked to prevent premature
explosion of the ship in some situations.
(h) The keyboard layout has been changed to better suit non-uk
keyboards. Specifically the following keys have been added:
(The original keys should still work)
c (press twice) - Command module separation
s (Hold down) - Activate Lateral thrusters
n - Toggle Normal(Assisted)/Free thruster flight modes
SHIFT-R - Attempt remote log-on to target
LEFT SHIFT-F1 - Chase view
LEFT SHIFT-F2 - Contact view
LEFT SHIFT-F3 - Missile View
LEFT SHIFT-F4 - Fixed External View
(i) Mouse wheel support has been added - using the mouse wheel
on a mouse wheel equipped mouse will scroll the contacts list.
(j) The key bindings can be re-assigned by editing the keybind.ini file.
(k) New radio chatter background noise has been added.
