De Havilland Mosquito MKXVI\
\
History\
\
The Mosquito is one of the most famous aircraft that was almost never made.
In the fall of 1938, de Havilland submitted their notion of a high speed bomber
made entirely of wood, but attracted no interest. They only received half
hearted approval in 1940, yet the "Mossie" was to become the most versatile
aircraft in the RAF inventory. Possessing impressive speed in a stable, twin
engine platform, the Mossie was used as a reconnaissance plane, a fighter
bomber, a night fighter, a high altitude fighter, and even as a carrier based
aircraft.\
\
Luftwaffe Reichmarshall, Herman Goering, became nearly obsessed with the
Mosquito, and insisted that Germany produce a similar type. Focke Wulf's Ta154
was created as the answer to the Mossie. It too was made of wood, and even
took the name Mosquito. Through good fortune, the Allies happened to bomb the
only German factory that could manufacture the advanced resins needed to bond
aircraft quality plywood dependably. Replacement resin was not only ill suited
to the task, it actually devoured the wood. The Ta154 project was cancelled.\
\
The Mossie in Air Warrior\
The Mossie is fast - faster than most fighters - and has great guns. However,
it is no dogfighter. Although it turns well for a bomber, any true fighter can
out turn it. Climb rate is the same story; any fighter staying in the vertical
with the Mossie can make it a quick snack unless the energy disparity is vast
in the Mosquito's favor.\
\
Unlike other bombers in Air Warrior, the Mossie has no gunner positions. Then
again, it can run away from practically anything and, thus, scarcely has need
for one. \
\
Armament: 4, 20mm cannon; 4, .303 caliber machine guns.\
Ammo Load: 300 shells per cannon; 2000 rounds per machine gun.\
Payload: 4, 500lb bombs.\
\
^
Performance\
As mentioned many times, the Mossie is extremely fast, and has an exceptional
rate of climb for a bomber. It has good high altitude performance as well.\
~
Performance Comparison\
\
The Mosquito is the fastest traveling, fastest climbing bomber in Air Warrior.
It is faster, in fact, than most fighters. \
