Lend Me Your Ear

By Howard G. Chua-Eoan

Norman Mailer reportedly considers being photographed the
equivalent of undergoing root-canal work. That hasn't stopped
the author from starring in his own bizarre improvisational
films. Last week Mailer lectured on his celluloid life at a New
York City retrospective of his movies. Among them: Maidstone,
the film he made in 1968 that ends with Mailer's family
shrieking "Daddy! Daddy!" off-camera as the author-director
tries to bite an ear off actor Rip Torn, who had attacked him
with a hammer. The battle ceases with an exchange of insults,
with Mailer muttering "He's hurt worse than me." How things
have changed. "In Rip's view, everything made perfect sense,"
says a now grateful Mailer. "He may have saved the film."
Sometimes it takes a hammer to drive home a point.
