- <p> DIED. FREDERICK UNGEHEUER, 61, journalist, who took his own
- life after a series of debilitating illnesses; in New York City.
- Ungeheuer was the classic globe-trotting TIME correspondent,
- covering Eastern Europe and West Africa in the '60s and the
- U.N. in the early '70s. After a stint with Chase Manhattan Bank,
- he rejoined TIME in 1977 as chief European economic-affairs
- correspondent in Brussels. Earlier this year, he returned from
- Paris to New York to pursue his first love: explaining Wall
- Street. "Friedel" was the ultimate perfectionist, fretting over
- the slightest nuance in his knowing, seamless copy, and so dedicated
- to his profession that he once abandoned a Thanksgiving dinner
- to nail down a major interview.
