  14. <p>     DIED. FREDERICK UNGEHEUER, 61, journalist, who took his own
  15. life after a series of debilitating illnesses; in New York City.
  16. Ungeheuer was the classic globe-trotting TIME correspondent,
  17. covering Eastern Europe and West Africa in the '60s and the
  18. U.N. in the early '70s. After a stint with Chase Manhattan Bank,
  19. he rejoined TIME in 1977 as chief European economic-affairs
  20. correspondent in Brussels. Earlier this year, he returned from
  21. Paris to New York to pursue his first love: explaining Wall
  22. Street. "Friedel" was the ultimate perfectionist, fretting over
  23. the slightest nuance in his knowing, seamless copy, and so dedicated
  24. to his profession that he once abandoned a Thanksgiving dinner
  25. to nail down a major interview.
