On the first day of the war in France, six Blenheim fighters of No. 600 Squadron took off on an airfield strafing mission. They were caught and engaged by Bf 110s of I/ZG 1, one of Goering's elite Zerst÷rer squadrons. The Bf 110 leader was Oberleutnant Wolfgang Falk, an excellent pilot who would later become a deadly night-fighter ace. The battle resulted in five of the Blenheims being shot down.
