The German Army invaded France, Holland, and Belgium on the 10th of May. No. 1 Squadron RAF was in the thick of the fighting from the beginning. Paul Richey flew four missions the first day and with the aid of two other pilots, shot down a Dornier 17 bomber. On the very next day, following an engagement, Paul found himself alone and behind a Dornier which promptly dove for the deck. In a long, twisting and turning treetop chase he fired all of his ammunition but failed to bring down the bomber. The badly damaged Dornier limped home, a testimony to the skill of its pilot.
