- Franklin Roosevelt's
- very privileged and
- wealthy background
- led him to believe
- that the poor had
- the right to a
- decent living, and
- that unless the
- rich cared for the
- less fortunate than
- themselves, society
- would collapse into
- civil disorder
- #
- Roosevelt over-
- came physical
- disability to make
- a political career.
- He earned his spurs
- as governor of New
- York. In 1929 the
- Depression threw
- millions out of
- work, and in the
- 1932 presidential
- election Roosevelt
- stood as the Demo-
- cratic candidate.
- He won with the
- promise of a "New
- Deal" to put the
- United States
- back to work
- #
- Before the 1932
- Depression, it was
- believed that the
- free market was
- a guarantee of
- prosperity. The
- collapse of the
- economy showed
- this was not the
- case. Roosevelt's
- New Deal meant a
- huge injection of
- public funds into
- projects such as
- dam- and road-
- building, in order
- to create jobs
- and stimulate
- the economy
- #
- The New Deal
- proved enormously
- popular. In 1936
- Roosevelt was
- re-elected with
- one of the biggest
- majorities ever.
- In 1940, he was
- elected once
- again, for an
- unprecedented
- third term

- When the war
- began, Roosevelt
- wanted to help
- Britain. But most
- Americans were
- reluctant to get
- involved in the
- conflict. Instead,
- Roosevelt passed
- the Lease and
- Lend Bill, which
- provided for the
- loan of military
- equipment to
- Britain. America
- had become the
- arsenal of
- democracy, said
- Roosevelt
- #
- In December 1941
- Japan attacked
- the US naval base
- at Pearl Harbor,
- Hawaii. Roosevelt
- said it was a day
- that would live in
- infamy. But for
- the British war
- effort it was a
- blessing. Now
- the full might of
- America was in
- the fight against
- Japan and Germany
- #
- Thousands of
- American troops
- were shipped to
- Britain in prepar-
- ation for the
- planned liberation
- of Europe. Most
- Britons welcomed
- them, although
- the popular catch-
- phrase "Over-paid,
- over-sexed and
- over here" summed
- up the tensions
- which their
- presence caused
- #
- The Allied invasion
- of German-occupied
- France in June1944,
- codenamed Overlord,
- was the greatest
- amphibious landing
- in the history of
- warfare. Combined
- American, British,
- and Canadian forces
- landed in Normandy
- on five beaches.
- Soon American
- troops were taking
- prisoners in the
- city of Cherbourg
- #
- Roosevelt met
- Churchill and the
- Soviet leader
- Stalin at Yalta in
- 1945, to plan for
- peacetime. The
- decisions they
- took partitioned
- Europe for the
- next 40 years.
- Roosevelt was a
- dying man - he
- did not live to
- see the war's end
- #
- Roosevelt died in
- April 1945, soon
- after beginning
- his fourth term.
- By now victory
- was assured. The
- last days of the
- war - including
- the destruction of
- the Japanese cities
- of Hiroshima and
- Nagasaki by the
- atom bomb - were
- overseen by the
- new president,
- Harry Truman
