- In 1942 Robert
- Oppenheimer, a
- brilliant physicist
- who had grasped
- the possibilities
- of the fission of
- uranium, was
- appointed head of
- the US government
- laboratory at Los
- Alamos, New
- Mexico. Its task
- was to create
- an atomic bomb

- The first atomic
- bomb fell on
- Hiroshima on
- August 6, killing
- 66,000 people. It
- was immediately
- clear that a new
- chapter in history
- had begun: reports
- the following day
- were already
- expressing fears
- about the future of
- this devastating
- new weapon

- In 1945, Robert
- Oppenheimer told a
- Senate Committee
- that "the overnight
- slaughter of 40
- million Americans
- citizens and the
- destruction of this
- country" could be
- the result of the
- use of an atom
- bomb against the
- USA. He urged the
- setting up of an
- organisation to
- control the use
- of atomic energy

- Oppenheimer's
- opposition to the
- hydrogen bomb,
- which he thought a
- pointless weapon,
- was interpreted as
- a deliberate act of
- disloyalty. In spite
- of his contribution
- to science and to
- his country's war
- effort, he was
- persecuted by
- anti-Communist
- right-wingers in
- the government
- #
- Ten years after
- the suspension
- of Oppenheimer's
- security clearance,
- the US government
- began to feel
- uneasy about his
- treatment. In 1963
- Oppenheimer was
- invited back into
- the establishment

- Like his great
- contemporary
- Albert Einstein,
- Oppenheimer was
- aware that he had
- placed a deadly toy
- in the hands of
- babes. With his
- experience of the
- military and
- political machine
- Oppenheimer
- must have died
- thinking that the
- planet would not
- long survive him
