1) INTRODUCTION
Xenakis is an 8/16 bit capable sample sequencer/player (ie a tracker). In
order to take advantage of the 16 bit facilities you will require a 16 bit
sound card such as the ESP Minnie Audio Card, that uses Acorn's new
sound DMA software.
This release (Version 1.01ß, release 1) is a free-to-use (see copyright
file) demo version.
1.1) Minimum Requirements
This software has been tested on a RiscPC600 and cannot be guaranteed
to operate correctly on any system with a lower specification. In practice
it should be reasonably effective on any machine with an ARM3 or better,
although 4Mb of RAM is probably a sensible minimum. Also note that the
front-end requires an 800*600 screen mode (mode 31).
1.2) Installation
Read the file README in the disk1 archive for installation details.
!SparkFS or !SparkPlug will be required to de-archive.
1.2.1) GETTING THE 16 BIT DEMO SONG LOADED AND PLAYING
As a demonstration of the quality of the 16 bit audio, a 16 bit song is
supplied in the demo. This song requires 1.7Mb free in Xenakis - that
means that you should allow at least 2.1Mb in the NEXT slot before
loading Xenakis - the program occupies about 400Kb. This also means
that you require a 16 bit sound card that uses Acorn's new Sound DMA
software.
Step-by-step:
i) Ensure you have read and understood the above paragraph, and
also successfully installed Xenakis from the archive.
ii) Enter Xenakis by clicking the left mouse button on the icon
after loading.
iii) Click on the arrow icon facing the song motif in the 'Disc'
section of the display. The filename 'clubham16' should be
highlighted in the left of the display.
iv) Click the green tick in the top left of the display.
The song should now load.
v) Click the right-hand button of the mouse over the play icon.
The song should now play from the start.
vi) To stop the song, click the stop icon.
vii) To quit back to the desktop, ensure that the song is stopped,
then click the eject icon with the left-hand mouse button.
1.3) Features and Further Development
This version of Xenakis includes the following features:
• 8 bit and 16 bit sound supported. Output in 16 bits is at 41400Hz (CD
quality.)
• Four or eight voice modes.
• Backwardly compatible to the (old) !Coconizer file format. As the
!Coconizer format is due to change in the next release, future versions
of Xenakis may use their own file format.
• Eight minute (1.7 Meg) 16 bit (Clubhammer) and 2½ minute 8 bit
(Junglistic Stylee) demo tracks.
• Pattern display during playback including VU meters and sequence
display.
• Sample display to facilitate placing of loop points, including zoom in
and out features.
Features under development:
• Sample editing features - including cut, paste, mix, amplify, etc.
• 16 voice mode (16 bit sound only).
• Extended effects including echo, phasing and baggy-trousers.
• Playback of song from desktop.
The sample location function had been disabled in this demo version. This
means that songs may only be written using the samples provided with
the software in the demo tracks.
2) USING XENAKIS
Note: The following instructions are not to be considered a manual for
Xenakis - they are an outline of the main operations of the software only.
2.1) Modes of Operation
Xenakis is operated in several modes, the most important of which are
COMMAND, EDIT and PLAY. Many functions of Xenakis are only accessible
from particular modes, although these restrictions are minimised as
much as possible.
The mode of operation of Xenakis is indicated by the positions of the
3D buttons relating to that mode. In this respect, the user-interface
can be considered similar to a piece of hardware.
2.1.1) COMMAND Mode
This is the most important mode from which all other modes are accessed.
To indicate that Xenakis is in command mode the Xenakis logo in the
centre of the screen will rotate. If you find that you cannot access
a function, try exiting modes until the logo spins.
2.1.2) PLAY Mode
This mode is entered by pressing the play button or hotkey. Whilst in play
mode Xenakis constantly plays-back the current song or pattern. To return
to command mode you must press the stop button or press Escape.
2.1.3) EDIT Mode
This mode is entered by pressing the record button or hotkey. This mode
allows you to create or edit the pattern data of a song. To return to
command mode press the stop button or Escape.
Whilst in edit mode, if the Audition button is down, then scrolling
through the pattern data will sound the notes on every channel
accordingly, and produce any effects entered in the pattern also.
This is a very powerful composition aid, allowing the pattern to
be heard as notes and effects are entered.
2.1.4) Other Modes
Other modes include the SEQUENCE EDIT mode and the LOAD SONG mode. These
are much more restrictive modes in that the mouse is contained within the
window at the top left of the screen. You may exit these modes by pressing
either the tick or the cross buttons towards the top of the window.
2.2) Facilities
The following features are available in Xenakis, and the mode in which
they are available is indicated, along with hotkeys.

3) KNOWN BUGS
Version 1.00ß, Release 1 is known to have the following bugs:
i) Play pattern with the left hand mouse button operates play from
current sequence position instead.
ii) Repeat points do not work correctly if value is above 64k in sample.
