FastECS version 1.0
Getting started
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Copy the file named FastECS into the "Video Drivers" drawer. Set the
Color Depth to 16 and the Screen Size to either 512x342 or 640x400. You
will get the best performance in 512x342, but the larger screen isn't too
shabby either. The Refresh Rate setting is ineffective since FastECS uses
it's own refresh cues.
Discussion
~~~~~~~~~~
This software has some severe limitations, and will probably only work
for a small percentage of ShapeShifter users. One of the reasons for this
is that it uses specific features of the 68030 MMU, and I didn't want to
spend months working out algorithms that take into account every possible
MMU configuration.
Since I use Dave Haynie's SetCPU to enable FastROM on my 2000, I decided
to work with this MMU configuration. Therefore, this driver will only
work with SetCPU and not with the standard CPU command, or any other MMU
tools. Virtual memory is right out! On a 3000, where FastROM is
unnecessary, this driver will create it's own MMU table as long as the
MMU is not in use.
Memory usage is another issue. A screen size of 640x400 uses about 650k
of fast ram and 128k of chip ram. If you have lots of ram, then this will
probably not bother you too much.
