Background
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Why should it be that complicated to download files from a BBS ?!
Is it really necessary with all those jumps between the area menu,
the file menu and the file lists? And when you at last have found
the files of interest - you have to choose a protocol and name the
files to download. It doesn't make it any easier when the files
have awkward names such as PCWL103B.ARJ. Does it have to be that
complicated ?!
During summer 1991 I met Hakan Akerberg. He was just as interested
in PCs, programming, modems and BBSs as I was. Neither one of us
had seen a BBS where the procedures were as simple as we had
wanted. There were certainly programs where you could tag files
but those programs could not be used for downloading the files.
Instead you were forced to return to the file menu and start
another program for the file transfer.
Hakan suggested that we together should write the perfect file
door. It couldn't be too difficult, simply tagging the files and
then automatically starting an external protocol for the file
transfer. A few weeks job maybe...
Hakan started with the routines for listing files and I with the
routines for ANSI sequences and the main menu. After two weeks of
work we had made a program with features for tagging files
directly in the file list and for downloading. But by then we had
got more ideas. Why not implement a feature for viewing text ?
While doing this we could just as well implement an archive-
viewer at the same time. A locate feature would be useful and why
not a splitscreen chat mode? Some improvements for the SysOp would
also be a good idea. We implemented a couple of features for
administrating the file-lists in the BBS as well.
Over a year later and after a number of closed beta releases had
been tested by a 20 man strong team, the first WideBeta version of
FastFile was released in January 1993. This version was designed
for use with RemoteAccess 1.11, SuperBBS and ProBoard BBS, and
soon created considerable interest from users. We received many
letters and file requests from all over the world.
After two WideBeta releases we were almost ready to release
FastFile 1.00 when, during the spring of 1993, RemoteAccess
version 2.00.g1 suddenly appeared. The entire file system had been
redesigned in this release and it became quickly apparent that
FastFile 1.00 would not work together with this new version of
RemoteAccess - thanks Andrew ... :-)
We soon began to receive letters desiring a new version of
FastFile adapted for RemoteAccess 2.0x ... So after almost another
years work rewriting FastFile to work with RemoteAccess 2.0x the
first wide beta of FastFile for RemoteAccess 2.0x was released in
the begining of 1994 ...
... and after another 12 months of beta testing, 5 wide betas and
17 closed betas we released FastFile 1.00 !
FastFile 1.00 was intended for use only with RemoteAccess 2.0x.
6
FastFile 1.00 had the same user interface as the old FastFile from
1993 but under this exterior nothing was the same. Almost all code
had been rewritten and it now consists of some 25 modules and
approximately 8000 lines of code. As a result of this amount of
code, we had also been forced to change our development system.
The new code is for the most part divided into threads which
allows, for example, file reading to take place as background
activity while the user continues in foreground !! This can be
noticed in the revised locate function - FastFile searches for
files in background while the user can continue to page file lists
and tag files.
FastFile 2.00
─────────────
Ok folks, It's 1996 and we are back with a new powerful release of
FastFile - FastFile 2.00. The 2.00 release contains a lot of new
nice features, including CD-ROM and Internet request features,
lightbar cursor, BMP-, JPEG and FLI-infoviewers, configuration for
columns in the area- and group-menu, option to start FastFile in
archive view mode and of course RemoteAccess 2.50 support.
During 1995 and early 1996 we released 9 beta versions of FastFile
to registered users and now it's ready. Have fun and see you all
in the Fidonet FASTFILE echo !!!!
Many thanks to all users of FastFile. We have not had the time to
reply to all the letters that we have received but we have been
proud of reading all the Net- and Crash- mail sent to our BBS.
Without this fantastic response, FastFile 2.00 would never have
been a reality ... ** Thanks **
We also like to thank our incredible *beta-team* and all other
persons who came up with good ideas, sent bug reports, lent us
hardware and kept us working day and night :-). Thanx guys !!

General
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FastFile 2.00 is a filedoor and filemanager for RemoteAccess 2.xx.
The program is built around a "graphic" user interface which makes
usage simple. It is for example possible to tag files in the lists
by using the cursor positioning keys and space. Transfer of the
tagged files is then initiated by the user pressing Ctrl-Z or D
and Z for ZModem download.
Using FastFile requires that ANSI emulation is handled by the
user's communication program - for example Terminate, FrontDoor,
ProComm Plus and Telix.
FastFile contains *all* the features usually found in the file
menu on most BBS's ! The most important features are:
- Changearea and FastAreaChange.
Choose an area from an area list or use the FastAreaChange
feature from a file list.
- FileTagging.
Tag files for download from file lists, the locate list or Raw
Dir. It is also possible to tag and read single files in an
archive !
- Upload and Download.
No file transfer protocols are embedded. You can easily install
any number of external protocols. FFCONFIG included in the
FastFile archive contains the commands for DSZ / GSZ, HSLink 1.0
Bimodem 1.24, CEXYZ 1.00 , Puma/MPt, VFast, Smodem and ZSXmodem.
- Internet FTP Request features.
Users can request files from Internet FTP-sites using FastFile !
- CD-ROM Request features.
Users can request files from many CD's on systems with only one
CD-ROM player.
- Locate.
Search filenames, descriptions or new files. Tag files in the
located files list and download! It is also possible to specify
if you want to search all groups/areas or just one group/area.
- TXTView.
Displays text files online. Even archived text files can be read
online. It is also possible to search in text files.
- ARCView.
Lists files saved in ARJ, SDN, SQZ, ARC, UC2, RAR, PAK, ZIP,
LHA, LZH and other archives. It is possible to tag single files
in an archive for downloading. Text files in archives can be
read online, it is even possible to download or view files in an
archive which is in another archive ! Is this hot or what :-) !!
- GIFView.
Displays information about GIF pictures. Colors, resolution and
more.
8
- MODView.
Displays detailed information about MODules.
- ChatMode.
Split-Screen ChatMode. Internal chat feature for user and SysOp.
FastFile can also be started directly in chat mode and may
thereby be used as an external chat program
- Help.
Configurable online help. Just press F1 or H to display an help
file. All the help files can be changed using FFCONFIG. The help
files can contain color codes.
- Long file descriptions.
The file descriptions can be between one and 20 lines long,
configurable by the sysop, and the user by pressing F.
- File information.
Even if the sysop has configured FastFile to use for example
five lines long file descriptions, the user can always display
the complete file description including information on who
uploaded the file and the date and size, by pressing I.

Registration
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FastFile is a _SHAREWARE_ program. This means that the program may
be downloaded from a BBS and be tested for 1 month without any
fee. If you then wish to continue using the program you _MUST_
register and pay a small fee. Then you will receive a personal
registration code which should be written into FF.CTL. This code
enables you to use additional registration features of FastFile.
These extra features are listed below, and also indicated by
{+} later in the manual. You will be able to use this registration
code in future releases of FastFile without additional cost. A
registered user will also have the opportunity of valuating newer
beta-versions of FastFile. Those beta-versions will only be
possible to use by registered users.
FastFile is copyright protected by R.H. Creative Computer Software
R.H.Creative Computer Software guarantees neither further develop-
ment nor support of FastFile. Development of new versions of
FastFile will depend on the number of users registering this
version.
You may NEITHER modify FastFile NOR include FastFile as a part of
any other software without the written permission of R.H. Creative
Computer Software. You may distribute FastFile on a CD-ROM in it's
original archive as long as the CD-ROM is clearly marked as Share-
ware and it explains the shareware concept.
You may NOT use a registration key that has not been obtained from
the registration agency R.H. Creative Computer Software.
You may copy and distribute unregistered versions of FastFile,
on condition that you do NOT charge anything for this. The files
within the FastFile archive may NOT be forwarded separately, only
the entire archive may be copied and distributed.

Registration features
─────────────────────
The following *Extra* features are available when FastFile has
been registered and the personal registration code entered.
- All SysOp-features can be used remotely.
- All the colors used by FastFile can be changed using FFCONFIG.
- The five second long pause and the information that FastFile is
unregistered disappers.
- FastFile events can be logged on a printer connected to a
communications port.
- Future beta versions of FastFile can be used.
- By the SysOp selected headers can be put into FILES.FF.
- FastFile displays upon termination the names of the BBS and the
SysOp and that the program is registered thus:
- FastFile 2.00
- Copyright (c) 1993, 1996 R.H. Creative Computer Software
- Registered to Richard Skalsky FASTFILE DEVELOPMENT CENTER
Registration costs
──────────────────
The registration fee for the program depends on the BBS
environment - commercial or private - in which it is used. A
private BBS is one physically located in a private household where
NO type of commercial activity is practised, and where the BBS
itself is operated by a private person. Other systems are to be
regarded as commercial and MUST be registered as such. A separate
registration is required for each installation of the program,
with exception for MultiLine systems which require only one
registration provided that all nodes use the same BBS and SysOp
names. The registration fee is subject to change without prior
notice.

Quick Installation, Configuration and Testing
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
To use FastFile you need an IBM 286 or above compatible computer
and DOS 3.3 or later. FastFile can also be used with OS/2 2.x,
OS/2 Warp v3, Desqview or MS-Windows.
In addition to DOS you need to have installed a copy of
RemoteAccess 2.0x together with a FOSSIL driver. You also need to
have file transfer protocols if you want to be able to transfer
files. The settings to use for example GSZ, DSZ, HSLink, Bimodem,
CEXYZ, ZSXmodem and Smodem comes included with FastFile.
A FOSSIL driver is a memory resident program that FastFile uses to
communicate with the modem. FastFile has been tested with three
FOSSIL drivers, Ray Gwinns X00, VX00 (for OS/2) and David Nugents
BNU. RemoteAccess, FOSSIL drivers and file transfer protocols can
be downloaded from most BBSs.
Follow these instructions to install FastFile assuming that you
have previously installed the BBS system and a Fossil driver.
- - I N S T A L L A T I O N - -
1. Create a new directory for FastFile on your harddisk.
Ex. C:\FASTFILE
1.1 Copy the FastFile archive to that directory.
1.2 Unpack the FastFile archive with the command : PKUNZIP FF_200.
2. Create a new directory for GSZ or DSZ or CEXYZ. Ex. C:\CEXYZ.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
We recommend that you use CEXYZ or PDZmodem instead of DSZ/GSZ !!
CEXYZ and PDZ is compatible with GSZ/DSZ and uses a FOSSIL driver.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
2.1 Copy the CEXYZ (or DSZ or GSZ) archive to that directory.
2.2 Unpack the CEXYZ (or DSZ or GSZ) archive.
3. Create a new directory for UC2 on your harddisk. Ex. C:\UC2
3.1 Copy or move UC2R2.EXE from C:\FASTFILE to C:\UC2
3.2 Unpack UC2 to C:\UC2, by running UC2R2.EXE in the C:\UC2 path.
23
4. Create a new directory for PKZIP, ARJ, LHA, RAR, SQZ and other
archive programs on your harddisk. Ex. C:\TOOLS
4.1 Copy your archive programs to this directory, and unpack them.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
If you already have archive programs installed on your harddisk,
skip instruction #4 and #4.1.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
5. Add the FASTFILE, UC2 and ARCHIVE directorys to your PATH line
in AUTOEXEC.BAT.
Ex. PATH C:\DOS;C:\FASTFILE;C:\UC2;C:\TOOLS
6. Add the line SET DSZLOG=C:\DSZ.LOG to your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
NOTE : "SET DSZLOG=" APPLIES EVEN IF YOU RUN GSZ OR CEXYZ !
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
7. Add the line SET FASTFILE=C:\FASTFILE to your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
NOTE : SKIP INSTRUCTION #7 IF YOUR BBS USES SEVERAL NODES !
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
8. Reboot your computer.
- - C O N F I G U R T I O N - -
1. MULTILINE CONFIG. (READ THIS IF YOUR BBS USES SEVERAL NODES !)
1.1 Start FFCONFIG.EXE from your node path, C:\RA\LINEx.
1.2 Check all paths and settings in FFCONFIG.
1.3 Select GLOBAL>DIRECTORYS in FFCONFIG and enter the right node-
path on the NODE PATH line. Ex. Node Path C:\RA\LINE1
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Node Path should specify the path of the directory containing the
files EXITINFO.BBS and DORINFO1.DEF for the actual line.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
1.4 Exit FFCONFIG and repeat #1.1 to 1.3 for all nodes. ( or copy
the first FF.CTL to all other node paths.)
A FF.CTL must be created for each line. The Node Path statement is
the only necessary difference between the FF.CTL files.
If you have a multiline BBS you can also use [task] and #Include:,
see "MultiNode Systems" later in this guide !!
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
DO NOT USE THE "SET FASTFILE=C:\FASTFILE" COMMAND ON MULTILINE BBS
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
24
2. SINGLE LINE CONFIG. (READ THIS IF YOUR BBS USES ONLY ONE NODE)
2.1 Start FFCONFIG.EXE from the FASTFILE directory, C:\FASTFILE.
2.2 Check all paths and settings in FFCONFIG. DON'T USE THE "NODE-
PATH" SETTING (GLOBAL>DIRECTORYS in FFCONFIG) !
- - T E S T I N G F A S T F I L E - -
1. Test FastFile by enter the command "US FASTFILE /L" in the
FASTFILE directory.
2. Test FastFile's archive viewer by pressing V (view) when the
cursor is pointing on a file in the filelist.
- - R U N N I N G F A S T F I L E F R O M T H E B B S - -
In order to start FastFile from RemoteAccess a new menu alter-
native should be added.
1. Start RACONFIG
2. Add a new alternative to your main menu :
User display = FASTFILE
Action = Execute sub-program (Type 7)
Data = C:\UC2\US.EXE C:\FASTFILE\FASTFILE.EXE *M *X
Hot-key = F
RemoteAccess 2.00.g1, 2.00 and 2.01 users !!
--------------------------------------------
Although FastFile 2.00 is intended for use with RemoteAccess 2.02
and 2.50, it can be used with RemoteAccess 2.00.g1, 2.00 and
2.01. Since these releases of RA don't support TAGLIST.RA it is
very important that you remove it every time a user has logged off.
TAGLIST.RA is placed in the node path, and to remove it you can
add this line to your BBS batch file:
DEL x:\RA\LINEx\TAGLIST.RA
The line above should be executed every time a user has logged off
your BBS.
RemoteAccess 2.50 users !!!
---------------------------
IF you have problems running FastFile 2.00 in RemoteAccess 2.50
mode you can include the /RDX command line switch to force
FastFile to RA 2.50 mode.
25
Configuration, FF.CTL
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The ASCII file FF.CTL is used to configure FastFile. FF.CTL may be
edited using a standard text editor or FFCONFIG.EXE. The following
codes can be used in FF.CTL within chat sequences and protocol
commands.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

actual node and "BBSPath =" points to the directory where the file
area file, FILES.RA resides.
Since EXITINFO.BBS and DORINFO1.DEF reside in different
directorys for each node, an FF.CTL file must be created for each
node and described by a node path. The only difference between
these FF.CTL files is the "NodePath=" information.
FastFile has to be started from the NodePath directory in order
to determine the FF.CTL file to use.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

PreShellCMD =
PreShellCMD specifies the command line to be executed before
FastFile executes external DOS programs.
Used if FastFile should swap to disc before shelling to DOS.
Also see MEMORY SWAP.
Ex. PreShellCMD = C:\UC2\UUC.EXE $DOS
-----
DosShellCMD =
Command to be executed when the sysop presses ALT-J (DOS shell).
*M can be used first on the line to specify that you want to swap
to disc before the command line should be executed. This requires
that PreShellCMD is used, see MEMORY SWAP.
Ex. DosShellCMD = *M COMMAND.COM > CON

File Transfer Protocols, FF.CTL
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FastFile uses external file transfer protocols to send and receive
files. FastFile can use up to 15 different protocols. FFCONFIG
contains the setting for the most usual protocols.
FastFile's external transfer protocols are configured as follows -
Line 01 | PROTOCOL = ZSXModem (Use this!)
Line 02 | Key S
Line 03 | Batch YES
Line 04 | DnLoad C:\ZSX\ZSXW port *P speed *B sz @*C
Line 05 | UpLoad C:\ZSX\ZSXW port *P speed *B rz
Line 06 | DnL-Log z
Line 07 | UpL-Log z
Line 08 | CPS2400 230
Line 09 | LogFile C:\GSZ\GSZ.LOG
Line 10 | Struct Z1S0!0!0!0!0!0!0!0!0N0!0
Line 11 | Short Zmodem
Line 12 | END PROTOCOL
Line 1 and 12
-------------
PROTOCOL = ZSXModem, END PROTOCOL
All protocols start and end with "PROTOCOL = XXXXXX" and "END
PROTOCOL" where XXXXXXX is the name of the protocol in the
download window. The name of the protocol can be max 35 character
long. If you put a * before the name of the protocol, "*ZModem",
that protocol will be the default protocol and the DL time for
this protocol will be written on the top status bar in FastFile
when you tag files. You can use the "M" key to change default
protocol in FastFile.
Line 2
------
Key S
This is the key the user have to press to start the protocol.
Line 3
------
Batch YES
If the protocol can send more than one file it's a BATCH PROTOCOL.
Line 4 and 5
------------
DnLoad C:\ZSX\ZSXW port *P speed *B sz @*C
UpLoad C:\ZSX\ZSXW port *P speed *B rz
Specifies the command that FastFile sends to the protocol in order
to start the upload and download. *M can be used on this line to
swap memory before FastFile starts the protocol.
35
Line 6 and 7
------------
DnL-Log z
UpL-Log Z
Specifies for FastFile the character in the protocol log file
which is to be interpreted as meaning successful up- and download.
Line 8
------
CPS2400 230
Specifies the characters per second rate that the protocol
achieves at 2400 Bps. This is used to show the download time on
the top status bar in FastFile.
Line 9
------
LogFile C:\GSZ\GSZ.LOG
You can use this line to enter the path and filename of the
protocol log file. If this is not used, FastFile uses the DSZ
log file as default. If you don't use this command in the protocol
setup, you must use the "SET DSZLOG=C:\GSZ\GSZ.LOG" command in
your AUTOEXEC.BAT or another BAT file.
Line 10
-------
Struct Z1S0!0!0!0!0!0!0!0!0N0!0
The struct line is used to specify the log format used by the
protocol. By changing this line, and the LogFile line, FastFile
will support all log formats. If you don't include the STRUCT
line, FastFile uses the default DSZ log standard.
"Z1S0!0!0!0!0!0!0!0!0N0!0" is the struct line for the default DSZ
logformat.
Here is the DSZ log and the struct line for that protocol :
LOGFILE: z 3583 14400 bps 1194 cps 0 errors 0 1024 FF.CTL 0
z 1108 14400 bps 1108 cps 0 errors 0 1024 FILE.FF 0
STRUCT: Z1 S0 !0 !0 !0 !0 !0 !0 !0 !0 N0 !0
Z1 = Control character. This is the character used by "DnL-Log"
and "UpL-Log". (1 = read only 1 character.)
!0 = Jump to next field. (Don't use this field).
S0 = Filesize. (0 = read all characters until space is found).
N0 = Filename. (0 = read all characters until space is found).
Just change this line if your protocol uses a different log format
than GSZ/DSZ. And if you have problem with this, just send us the
protocol and we will set up it for you :-)
36
Line 11
-------
Short Zmodem
Short is used to specify a short name of the protocol which will
be shown in the information line on the top of the screen.
37
ARCHIVE/GIF/MOD/TEXT-Support, PACKET.CTL
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FastFile includes features to view files inside an archive and
even read files contained by an archive. It is possible to tag and
download files from inside archives and use FastFile to uncompress
files from an archive. For these features it is required that
FastFile can find a copy of the archivers in your PATH. FastFile
can also be used to display information about GIF, TGA, PCX, BMP,
JPG, FLI and MOD files and read text files online.
FastFile uses the information found in PACKET.CTL to know what to
do with the archives. The PACKET.CTL, that comes with FastFile,
includes support for ARJ, SDN, SQZ, ZIP, LZH, LHA, ARC, UC2, RAR,
PAK, GIF, TGA, PCX, BMP, JPG, FLI and MOD files. If you want to use
other archivers with FastFile you just add information about that
format to PACKET.CTL.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
NOTE: Users using the american MM-DD-YY date format may change the
filelist format line for ZIP files in PACKET.CTL to :
S0!0!0!0 MM DD YY !0!0!0N0
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
How to setup archive programs in PACKET.CTL

TEXTVIEW, INFOVIEW and NOVIEW
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FastFile can also be used to display information about GIF and
MOD files. You can view information about GIF and MOD files by
pressing V (View) when the cursor is placed by a GIF or MOD file.
To view GIF and MOD files two external programs (MODINFO.EXE and
GIFINFO.EXE) that comes with FastFile are used. It is important
that you place MODINFO.EXE and GIFINFO.EXE in your PATH. We
recommend that you add the FastFile directory to your PATH and put
them there.
You can write your own view utilities for FastFile. Use TEXTVIEW
in PACKET.CTL if you want to display information on fullscreen and
INFOVIEW if you want the information in a window. Your utility
just have to write the information to the screen, FastFile uses a
pipe command to write a VIEW.TMP (GIFVIEW GIRL.GIF > VIEW.TMP).
The VIEW.TMP file is then displayed in a window or fullscreen. You
can use GIFVIEW.EXE and MODVIEW.EXE from DOS to test it, just type
"MODVIEW SOUNDS.MOD" and the information will be displayed on the
screen.
In INFOVIEW you can use color codes to display colors in the
infowindow. Try to type "GIFINFO GIRL.GIF" on the DOS command line
and you will see some of the color codes ...
Here is all color codes :
@@0 Gray
@@1 Blue
@@2 Green
@@3 Cyan
@@4 Red
@@5 Magenta
@@6 Yellow
@@7 White
NOVIEW is used in PACKET.CTL to prevent for example EXE and COM
files to be viewed by FastFile.
Color Configuration, COLOR.CTL {+}
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
As a registered user you can change all the colors used by
FastFile. The color settings are stored in the COLOR.CTL file in
the FastFile directory.
We recommend that you use FFCONFIG (see color setup in FFCONFIG)
to change the colors, but you can also use an editor to edit the
COLOR.CTL file.
41
Memory Swap
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FastFile can use the UC2 program to swap memory to hard disc
before external programs are executed and to view UC2 archives.
WE HAVE GOT PERMISSION TO INCLUDE UC2 WITHIN THE FASTFILE ARCHIVE,
BUT REMEMBER THAT UC2 IS _SHAREWARE AND_ REQUIRES REGISTRATION IF
YOU CONTINUE TO USE IT AFTER THE _EVALUATION PERIOD_ EXPIRES ! FOR
MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE LICENSE AGREEMENT SEE THE DOCUMENTATION
WHICH COMES WITH UC2R2.EXE !
To be able to use the swap feature must must have -
- installed UC2 on your hard disc using the installation program-
UC2R2.EXE that comes with FastFile.
- added the UC2 directory to your PATH statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT
and rebooted your computer.

CD-ROM Request
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
With the CD-ROM Request feature you can use FastFile to request
files from CD-ROM's on systems with only one CD-ROM reader !! This
feature is very powerful and by using this your users can download
thousands of files from your BBS and you don't have to store the
files on your harddisk !!
When a user tries to download a file that is requestable, he get a
message asking if he wants to request the file(s). The Request
Manager then asks the sysop to insert a CD-ROM in the CD-ROM
reader. The files are copied from the CD-ROM to the fileareapath
on the harddisk and the user will get a message when the file(s)
are online and ready for download. He will get this message when
he starts FastFile or in RA if he still is online when the file(s)
are ready for download. The requested file(s) are saved in the
fileareapath and it will not be deleted after the download.
Requestable files in the request areas are marked with a . in the
filelist. Files in request areas that already are requested and
available on the harddisk have no . mark in the filelist.

Internet FTP Request
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FTP Request Support for "hobbes.nmsu.edu" is included in this
release. It only includes support for "hobbes.nmsu.edu" and you
need to run it on OS/2 2.x with TCP/IP 2.0, OS/2 Warp 3.0 with
TCP/IP 2.0 or on OS/2 Warp Connect. You also need a direct
connection to internet. We are working on support for other FTP
sites, Windows and DOS. This is the first release of the Request
Manager and the tools for FTP request. You can change the files in
this archive to support other FTP-sites.
How it should work
──────────────────
With the FTP Request feature you can use FastFile to request files
from a FTP site on Internet. You need to run FastFile on OS/2 and
you need a direct Internet connection to use this feature. This
feature is very powerful and by using this your users can download
thousands of files from your BBS and you don't have to store the
files on your harddisk !! Today, FastFile is the only program that
supports this new powerful feature. When a user tries to download
a file that is requestable from a FTP site, he gets a message
asking if he wants to request the file(s). FastFile then requests
the files in the background and the user can wait online, in
FastFile or in RA or logoff and call back later. The user will
receive a message when the file(s) are online and ready for
download. He will receive this message in FastFile or in RA
directly if he is still online when the file(s) are ready for
download. The requested files are saved in the fileareapath and
will not be deleted after the download. Files in FTP areas that
are requestable are marked with a . in the filelist. Files in
FTP areas that already are requested and available on the harddisk
have no . mark in the filelist. We are using this new feature on
our BBS and it works fine. Today we poll hobbes.nmsu.edu to update
our RA FDB twice a day. This release also includes tools to import
hobbes index files into the RA FDB. Import features for other FTP
sites will be released in the future.

TipOfTheDay
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
By putting TIPfiles in your FastFile directory FastFile can show
information windows when started.
Name the files : FFTIP.001 - FFTIP.999
A few example TIPfiles are included in the FastFile archive.
54
System start
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FastFile reads seven BBS system files when started:
DORINFO1.DEF
------------
Contains information on users (names, surnames, modem speeds etc.)
EXITINFO.BBS
------------
More user information (Downloadlimit, Uploadlimit, Wantchat etc.)
FILES.RA, FGROUPS.RA
--------------------
Information on all file areas (paths, names, security etc.)
LIMITS.RA
---------
Download ratios.
CONFIG.RA
---------
RemoteAccess configuration information.
TAGLIST.RA
----------
Information about tagged files.
When FastFile is started in local mode (/L), then only the files
FILES.RA, FGROUPS.RA, CONFIG.RA, TAGLIST.RA are read.
When FastFile is started in RA 2.50 mode it will also read the
FILES.RDX and FGROUPS.RDX index files.
FFSTART.HLP
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
When invoked FastFile first reads the files above and then
FFSTART.HLP is displayed assuming it is present in the FastFile
system path and the user has got an appropriate security level.
See FFHelpSec.
FFSTART.HLP is an file showing "QuickHelp - How to use FastFile"
explaining the elementary features of FastFile. The user can break
displaying by pressing ESC.
55
Different methods to invoke FastFile
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
There are several different methods to invoke FastFile. The most
common is using the command "FASTFILE". FastFile can also be
started in Chat mode, as New Files Search, Local , NoCarrier and
other modes by including switches in the FASTFILE start command
thus:
CHAT-LOCAL (/CL)
────────────────
Used to start FastFile directly in chat mode. Example - configure
your BBS program to execute the command "FASTFILE /CL" by pressing
ALT-F2. FastFile can then be started in chatmode by the SysOp
pressing ALT-F2 when the user is online.
CHAT-REMOTE (/CR)
─────────────────
Used to start FastFile in remote chat mode. /CR is similar to /CL,
except that FastFile "yells" for SysOp when /CR is used.
A new alternative should be included in the main menu thus:
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
User display = Yell for SysOp
Action = Execute sub-program (Type 7)
Data = C:\UC2\US.EXE C:\FASTFILE\FASTFILE.EXE /CR *M *X
Hot-Key = Y
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
A user can now call SysOp in FastFile remote chat mode by pressing
"Y" in the main menu.
LOCAL (/L)
──────────
Used to start FastFile in local mode. This can be used, for
example, in order to use FastFile's SysOp-features without
first logging to the BBS locally.
When FastFile is used in local mode, the files DORINFO1.DEF,
EXITINFO.BBS, LIMITS.RA and the FOSSIL driver are not used.
56
NEW FILES SEARCH (/NF)
──────────────────────
Used to start FastFile in new files search mode. FastFile then
displays all the new files which have been added since the user's
last logon. File names are listed and the user has the opportunity
to tag files for downloading.
NO CARRIER DETECT (/NC)
───────────────────────
Turn off the check on carrier detect. Used if FastFile is used
between two systems connected by a null-modem cable.
NO FILE CHECK (/NOFCHK)
───────────────────────
"/NOFCHK" (No File Check) can be used on the FastFile command line
to start FastFile with no filecheck at download (FASTFILE.EXE
/NOFCHK). When a user selects download, FastFile checks if all
tagged files in the filelists exists on the harddisk. If a tagged
file does not exist on the harddisk FastFile deletes that file
from the temp file (FASTFILE.TMP) sent to GSZ.
This "file-exist-check" can now be disabled with the /NOFCHK
command on the FastFile command line. This function can be used
when FastFile is used for tagging files on a CD-ROM and a external
CD-ROM door is used. With the /NOFCHK command FastFile will put
all tagged files found in the FileDataBase in FASTFILE.TMP even if
the files does not exist on the CD found in the CD-ROM. In this
case the external CD-ROM door must change CD in the CD-ROM and
copy all CD files to the harddisk and start the download.
NOTE: Use only "/NOFCHK" if you use an external CD-ROM door with
FastFile and/or want to disable the file-exist-check in
FastFile. You don't have to use an external CD-ROM door with
FastFile, FastFile has CD-ROM support build in and copys
all tagged files on a CD-ROM to the harddisk before it
starts the download.
NO FAST KEYBOARD (/NFK)
───────────────────────
/NFK is used if you don't want FastFile to change the keyboard
speed.
DOWNLOAD (/DL)
──────────────
Is used to start FastFile in download mode.
57
AREA (/An)
──────────
/An is used to start FastFile direct in a filelist. n=1 to 64000.
"FASTFILE /A2" will force FastFile to the filelist in area 2
without using the using the group or area menu. NOTE: The security
level for area n is not checked ! FASTFILE /A can be used to start
FastFile in the area last used.
FILEGROUP (/Gn)
────────────────
Used to start FastFile in a specific filegroup. FastFile will not
check the groupsecurity when this feature is used. FASTFILE /G4
will force FastFile to the areamenu in group 4. FASTFILE /G can be
used to start FastFile in the group last used.
SCREEN LENGTH (/SLnn)
─────────────────────
Used to start FastFile in locked screen length mode. nn=20 to 49.
Per default FastFile reads the users screen length from the files
RA leaves. /SLnn is used to force FastFile to be started with a
specified screen length.
MAX SCREEN LENGTH (/MSLnn)
──────────────────────────
/MSLnn is used to set a Max Screen Length.
Ex. If you use /MSL24 -
FastFile will use 24 lines when a user have 24 lines or more in
the RA setup, 20 lines with 20 lines users, 19 lines with 19 lines
users etc. ...
VIEW (/V[filename])
───────────────────
FastFile can also be used as an external archive-viewer !! Use /V
[filename] to view a file. FastFile can view all filetypes
specified in PACKET.CTL.
To use FastFile as an external archive viewer in RA, add
C:\FASTFILE\FASTFILE.EXE /V@ *X *M under "Ext arc viewer" in
RACONFIG.
Ex. FASTFILE.EXE /VFF_200.ZIP.
ISDN SUPPORT (/ISDN)
────────────────────
FastFile can be used on ISDN lines by starting FastFile with /ISDN
or setting the ISDN option in FF.CTL. See Configuration, FF.CTL.
58
FORCE RA 2.50 SUPPORT (/RDX)
────────────────────────────
To force FastFile 2.00 to RemoteAccess 2.50 mode you can include
the /RDX command line switch when starting FastFile.
FORCE RA 2.02 SUPPORT (/NORDX)
──────────────────────────────
Use /NORDX to force FastFile to RA 2.02 mode.
HELP (/?)
─────────
Displays the FastFile version number, copyright information and
all the available switches.
Examples of the different ways to invoke FastFile
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FASTFILE
Starts FastFile in normal mode.
FASTFILE /L
Starts FastFile in local mode.
FASTFILE /NF /NC
Starts FastFile in new files search mode and without control of
carrier detect.
FASTFILE /CR
Starts FastFile in remote chat mode.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
These parameters may be combined in a logical manner.

The Group Menu
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The first displayed menu when starting FastFile is the group menu.
Each group has a number and by choosing a number and pressing
Enter, the areamenu for that group is displayed. The arrow keys
or the mouse, if used by a communication program that supports it,
together with Enter can also be used to select an group. The group
menu can display up to 38 areas per screen. If more than 38 groups
exist, plus (+) and minus (-) can be used to swap pages.
The functions Chat (Y), Upload (U), Locate (L), Redraw (R), Quit
(Q), NewFilesSearch (N), Help (H) and Area (A) can also be invoked
from the group menu.
The Area Menu
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Each area has a number and by choosing an area number and pressing
Enter, the file list for that area is displayed. The arrow keys
or the mouse, if used by a communication program that supports it,
together with Enter can also be used to select an area. The area
menu can display up to 38 file areas per screen. If more than 38
file areas exist then plus (+) and minus (-) can be used to swap
pages.
The functions Chat (Y), Upload (U), Locate (L), Redraw (R), Color
Toggle (W), Quit (Q), NewFilesSearch (N) and Help (H) can also be
invoked from the area menu.
FastAreaChange
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The FastAreaChange feature can be used in a file list as a short
cut to change file area without selecting it from the area menu.
The Left/Right keys can be used directly, in order to select the
file area previous or next to the current area. In this case
the file list will be displayed immediately without the need to
press Enter to confirm.
63
The File Menu
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The file menu display shows file names, filedates, sizes and
descriptions. Each screen of the file menu display shows up to 21
files. The keys PgUp(9,-), PgDn(3,+,Enter), Home(7), End(1) are
used to swap between file menu display screens. Up(8) and Down(2)
are used to point at a file within the file list. Pressing END
once results in pointing to the last file of the current screen
Another press of END makes the last file of the file list pointed
to. Pressing Home once and twice works similarly.
The Left and Right keys can be used to select the previous and the
next file areas directly (FastAreaChange).
Long File Descriptions (information window)
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
If the description of a file is too long then the character (i) is
displayed at the right of the description. Those longer file
descriptions can be displayed by pressing "I". The information
window also displays the filesize, uploaddate and more.
A user can use the FileDescriptionLength feature "F" to select the
description length in the filelists. DESCLENGTH in FF.CTL is used
to select the default filedescription length, 1-20 lines.
Tagging files
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Files in the file list can be marked for downloading by using the
up and down arrow keys (or 8 and 2 keys) to position the cursor in
front of a desired file, and then pressing Space, T, 0, or INSERT.
The status line at the top of the display shows the number of
files thus tagged, the total size in KBs and the time required to
transfer those files using Zmodem (or another protocol if so
desired by the SysOp). If too many files corresponding to the
users limits are tagged then either the size or the time in the
status line blinks, and the download cannot be initiated.
In file area 0 (Tagged Files) all the tagged files from all file
lists are shown. This area is displayed either by pressing "*", by
choosing area 0 from the area menu, or by using FastAreaChange.
Pressing the character "/" will remove all file tags in all file
areas.
64
RemoteAccess 2.02 and 2.50 tagfile support
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FastFile is compatible with the RA 2.02 and 2.50 tag file. In
other words, a user can tag files using FastFile and then download
them using RemoteAccess or tag files using RA and then download
them using FastFile.
Note: If you are using RA 2.00.g1, 2.00 or 2.01 you must remove
the x:\RA\LINEx\TAGLIST.RA every time a user has logged off.
Download
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FastFile uses external protocols (such as GSZ) for transferring
files. A download is initiated by pressing "D". A menu will be
displayed from which the desired protocol can be selected, for
example by pressing "Z" for Zmodem. The download is then started
and all the tagged files will be transferred.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Note: If using Xmodem only one file can be sent at a time !!
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
A download can also be started directly, without using the
protocol selection window, by simply pressing Ctrl-X, Ctrl-Y,
Ctrl-Z, Ctrl-B, Ctrl-H for transfer using Xmodem, Ymodem
Zmodem, BiModem or HSLINK respectively when pointing at the wanted
file (Ctrl-hotkey).
Logoff after Download
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The logoff after download feature will let a user automatically
log off the system when a download has been completed. When a user
starts a download FastFile will ask "Logoff after Download ?".
Choose Yes to automatically log off when the download has been
completed.
Password and FreeFile support
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FastFile also supports RA's FreeFile and Password features. See
the RA documentation for more information about this features.
CD-ROM, DAT and TAPE support
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FastFile has built-in CD-ROM support. This means that FastFile can
automatically copy files marked for download from a CD-ROM area to
a temporary directory on a harddisk before starting a download.
This will be done if a CDCOPY.BAT isn't present in the FastFile
directory.
65
CDCOPY.BAT
──────────
Use this batch-file to run external programs and copy files from
CD-ROM and DAT tapes to your harddisk before FastFile starts the
download.
If this batch-file is in your FastFile path and tagged files are
marked as CD-ROM files, FastFile will run it before the download
is started. If this file is not in the FastFile path and tagged
files are marked as CD-ROM files, FastFile will copy tagged files
to the temp-path before the download is started.
--- CDCOPY.BAT START ---
REM Use this line to run external programs before the files copys
REM to the temp-path.
REM C:\TAPEDISK\TDSEEK.EXE %1 /WAIT
REM This line will copy all tagged files, marked as CD-ROM files,
REM to the temp-path.
COPY %1 %2
REM Use this line to include comment in archive from CD-ROM if you
REM want.
REM ARJ c -zcomment.txt %2
--- CDCOPY.BAT END ---
TDSEEK.EXE %1 /WAIT
-------------------
This command is needed when running TapeDisk software under DV or
Windows to allow seeking a file without delaying the other nodes
while the tape seek is in progress. This is Not needed for OS/2.
Note: TapeDisk is a commercial program that allows any SCSI tape
drive to operate like a HD/CD. For more Information you can call
Tapedisk Corporation voice at 414-231-3333 or fax 414-233-8699.
The information file FILES.FF {+}
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
If "DL description" is set to YES in RACONFIG an information file,
with name FILES.FF, is sent to the user as part of the download.
This information file contains the names and descriptions of the
downloaded files.
If FastFile has been registered then the SysOp has the possibility
to add headers to the FILES.FF file containing, for example,
information about the BBS. This heading text is maintained as a
separate file "DLHEAD.FF" in the FastFile system directory.
66
DOWNLOAD.BAT
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Following a download FastFile executes the batch file DOWNLOAD.BAT
if this file exists in FastFile's system directory. DOWNLOAD.BAT
can be used, for example, to maintain a log file, DOWNLOAD.LOG
containing information on all downloads to the BBS. An example
DOWNLOAD.BAT is included in the FastFile archive.
You can specify how the DOWNLOAD.BAT should be executed in FF.CTL.
The following parameters is default in DOWNLOAD.BAT:
────────────────────────────────────────────────────
%1 Path to file without final backslash (\)
%2 File name excluding stop and extension (.XXX)
%3 Extension excluding stop (.)
%4 Date
%5 Time
%6 Protocol
%7 User name - name and surname
Upload
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
An upload is initiated by pressing "U". A menu will be displayed
from which the desired protocol can be selected, for example by
pressing "Z" for Zmodem. The upload is then started by the user
in his local communications program. On completion of the upload
the user must provide a description of the file, using the
embedded full-screen editor. The arrow keys, Home, End, Delete,
Insert and Ctrl-Y (delete line) can be used in this editor.
Before requesting the user for the description, FastFile checks
for the file FILE_ID.DIZ in the uploaded archive - this file
should contain text describing the archive. If found, FastFile
will use this text as the description.
The file description is saved by pressing Ctrl-Z. If an upload
area is specified in FF.CTL (UpLoadArea = ) then all files sent to
FastFile are stored in that directory. If no upload area is
specified the files are stored in the current file area, which is
the area in use by the user when the upload is initiated, provided
that uploads to this area are allowed.
Dupe Check
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
If a file that already exist in the FDB is uploaded, the uploaded
file will be deleted and the users ratio will not be changed.
FastFile only checks for dupes in fileareas that have "dupecheck"
set to "yes" in RACONFIG. Key "?" can be used in the upload window
to start an dupecheck.
FastFile find dupes by searching the harddisk. If you want a
faster dupecheck you can use DUPE.FF. Put DUPE.FF in the FastFile
directory. DUPE.FF should include all filenames in the BBS. Fast-
File reads DUPE.FF when checking for dupes. If DUPE.FF is not in
the FastFile directory FastFile checks for dupes on HD.
67
UPLOAD.BAT
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Following an upload, FastFile executes the batch file UPLOAD.BAT
if it exists in FastFile's system directory. UPLOAD.BAT can be
used to scan for viruses, repack the file to another archive
format or maintain an UPLOAD.LOG with information on all uploads.
A few example UPLOAD.BATs is included in the FastFile archive.
You can specify how the UPLOAD.BAT should be executed in FF.CTL.
The following parameters is default in UPLOAD.BAT:
──────────────────────────────────────────────────
%1 Path to file without final backslash (\)
%2 File name excluding stop and extension (.XXX)
%3 Extension excluding stop (.)
%4 Date
%5 Time
%6 Protocol
%7 User name - name and surname
Locate / Search
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The Locate feature can be used to search for a file within the
file areas. FastFile searches all file areas and displays a
listing of the found files. It is then possible to select files
for download by tagging in this list.
The locate feature is invoked by pressing "L" or "S". A locate
window is then displayed in which the user enters search para-
meters. By specifying * only, a search is initiated for the files
that have been added since the user's previous login.
It is also to specify if you want to search all of the file groups
or just the one you are in or just the file area you are in.
The searching for files thus initiated is performed in background.
This allows the user to continue scanning the lists and tagging
files at the same time as the search is performed.
The search text in the search window can be edited using the Left,
Right, Backspace, Delete and Insert keys.
The search result will be presented as a file list on the screen.
Key "V" can be used, in the Locate and NewFilesSearch list, to
"quick jump" to an filearea. Just put the cursor at a areaname in
the list and press "V".

New Files Search
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FastFile can automatically search for the files that have been
added since the last logon. This can be done in three different
ways:
1. Start FastFile using the /NF switch.
2. Pressing N (NewFilesSearch).
3. Pressing L (Locate) and search for "*".
The search result will be presented as a file list on the screen.
It is also possible to specify how many days old files FastFile
should look by just entering the number of days back.
FastFile will only search in those areas that has RA's "New Files"
flag set to YES.
69
View
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The FastFile viewer is a combined Archive, Text, GIF and MODule
viewer which is very easy to use. Viewing is initiated by pointing
to a file in the filelist and pressing "V". FastFile automatically
detects the type of the selected file and views it.
If the file is of type ZIP, LZH, ARJ or SQZ, then FastFile will
list the content of that archive.
Similarly text files can be viewed online by pointing to the file
and typing "V" or "5".
T (tag) can be used to tag individual files in the archive for
downloading and V (view) can be used to view an archived file.
It is also possible to view the contents of, or text files in, an
archive which is itself archived.
Ex. 1. Position the cursor before the file FF.ZIP in the file list.
2. Type V (view). The contents of the archive (FF.ZIP) are now
displayed.
3. Position the cursor before the file DOC.ZIP in the archive
FF.ZIP.
4. Type V again. The contents of DOC.ZIP are now displayed.
5. Position the cursor before the file READ.ME in the archive
DOC.ZIP (which itself resides in the archive FF.ZIP).
6. Type V again. The contents of READ.ME are now displayed.
The locate function (L) can also be used for searching for
keywords in text files.
Ex. 1. Type V to view a text file.
2. When the file is displayed, type L (locate).
3. A locate window is displayed which provides the possibility
to search for a text string in the file.
View can also be used for GIF format files. In this case the size
of the file and the picture resolution and number of colors will
be displayed.
If a MOD-file is viewed then FastFile displays the modules
different samples with names, durations and sizes etc.
Within the view window the keys Up/Down, +/-, Home and End can be
used to swap pages within the viewed file.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Note: ** The SysOp function F3 can also be used to view files ! **
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
70
Chat
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FastFile has an embedded Full Screen Chat. There are 4 different
methods to invoke chat mode.
1. User calls (yelling) for SysOp by pressing "Y". FF will
then "call" for SysOp. If the file PAGE.RA exists in the BBS
system directory FastFile will "play" the PAGE.RA melody using
the computers loud speaker. Otherwise a loud speaker "beep"
will be produced.
SysOp can respond to the yell by pressing SPACE or ENTER.
2. SysOp can at any time initiate a chat by pressing F9.
3. FastFile can even be used purely as a chat program. Chat mode
is started directly by executing FastFile with /CL (chat local)
and /CR (chat remote) parameters.
The command "FASTFILE /CL" can by invoked by a function key
(alt-F) in the BBS program. SysOp can thereby start FastFile in
chat mode, by pressing this function key.
4. /CR works similarly but FastFile then "yells" for SysOp. The
command "FASTFILE /CR" can be inserted as the function "Yell
for SysOp" in the BBS main menu.
ALT-F can be used in the chat if FastFile has been started with
/CL or /CR. FastFile then swaps to it's filedoor mode and
displays the area menu. For more information on /CL and /CR,
see the installing FastFile section earlier in this document.
"SCROLL LOCK" can be used to toggle sound on/off within the
chat. When the "Scroll Lock" lamp on the keyboard is lit the
sound is turned off.
71
Special keys that can be used during chat:
Key Function Available to
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
F1-F4 Writes prepared texts defined in FF.CTL (SysOp)
F5 Writes SysOp's name (SysOp)
F6 Writes User's name (SysOp)
F7 Writes Date (SysOp)
F8 Writes Time (SysOp)
Ctrl-Enter Writes text defined in FF.CTL ( :-) ) (SysOp)
ALT-Enter ( :-( ) (SysOp)
Ctrl-C Clear chat window (User/SysOp)
ALT-C Capture. Save screen to CAPTURE.FF (SysOp)
ALT-W Jump between User/SysOp windows (SysOp)
ALT-F Show the area menu (SysOp)
ESC Ends the chat. The user can terminate (User/SysOp)
the chat provided that the statement
"ChatEsc =" is set to "YES" in FF.CTL.
ScreenColor
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The ScreenColor feature (W) allows the user to use FastFile in
monochrome mode if he prefers. This speeds up the displaying of
file lists. Pressing "W" causes toggling between color and
monochrome modes.
ChangeTimeMode
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The status line at the head of the display shows the time required
to download the currently tagged files using Zmodem. Pressing "M"
toggles between by Xmodem, Ymodem and Zmodem required times.
Sensitive Online Help
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
A FastFile Help-screen is displayed by pressing "H" or "F1". That
screen shows all the FastFile commands and a short description of
each command. There is 8 different help-screens available. The
help-screen(s) can be edited with FFCONFIG.
Redraw
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The Redraw feature (key R) results in FastFile redisplaying the
current screen. This is useful if communication line disturbances
caused corruption of transmitted data.
72
Quit
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The feature Quit (Q) or Goodbye (G) is used to exit FastFile.
FastFile will update information such as Timelimits, WantChat in
the file EXITINFO.BBS before terminating.
ESC can also be used to exit FastFile and the SysOp can use ALT-H
or F10 to quit FastFile.
73
SYSOP FEATURES {+}
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FastFile includes a number of features to help SysOp maintain
RemoteAccess file database. This file area manager can be used
locally (and remotely if FastFile has been registered). Other
SysOp features are included for DOS-Shell, RawDir, LockOut,
TimeLimits and SystemInformation($). Since FastFile don't compress
RA's file database it's recommend that RAFILE COMPRESS is executed
every night. ---------------
In FF.CTL should be specified the security level required for
remotely use of SysOp features.
On pressing "?", an extra help line is displayed at the top of the
file list. That line indicates which various SysOp features are
available. Pressing "?" again removes that help line.
Edit FileDescriptions and Comments (F4)
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The Edit feature (F4) allows updating of file descriptions in RA's
file database. Fullscreen editing of a file description is invoked
by pointing to the file and pressing F4.
The text is saved by pressing Ctrl-Z. Ctrl-Y is used to delete
lines and Home, End and the arrow keys moves the cursor within the
edit window. ESC terminates editing without saving the text.
The Edit feature can also be used to edit comments in the file-
lists. Just put the cursor at a comment line and press F4. You can
now edit the comment and press Enter when you are ready. ESC
terminates editing without saving the text.
Import FILE_ID.DIZ (Shift-F4)
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Shift-F4 can be used to import FILE_ID.DIZ descriptions from a
archive to the filelist. Put the cursor on a file and press Shift-
F4.
RawDir, MakeDir (F2)
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Using the RawDir feature (F2) causes all the files and directorys
in a chosen directory on the hard disk or on a diskette to be
displayed as a file list in FastFile. Files can then be tagged,
viewed and downloaded. This is a powerful feature which only SysOp
should have access to.
The right and left arrow keys can be used to change to a sub-
directory or parent directory.
74
Pressing F2 causes display of a pathline in which a directory path
can be entered. If the directory exists then its contents are
displayed as a file list. Desired files can then be marked with
"T", and downloaded by pressing "D". If the specified directory
does not exist then FastFile displays a question on whether it
should be created. The question requires an answer, [Y]es or [N]o.
F2 + ENTER can be used to display all the files in the file area
directory.
The RawDir-feature can also be used to move or copy files to or
from RawDir. See Move (F6) and Copy (F5) below. Delete (F8) can
also be used in RawDir.
75
Move (F6)
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Move (F6) can be used to move files in the file list between file
areas, to or from RawDir or from archive to RawDir.
Example.
--------
1. Move file(s) within a file list.
a. Tag the file or files to be moved.
b. Place the cursor to the desired position in the file list.
c. Press F6.
The tagged files will be moved to the new position.
2. Move file(s) between two file areas.
a. Tag the file or files to be moved.
b. Change area.
c. Point to the file next to the position where you
want the moved file to be placed within the filelist.
d. Press F6
The tagged files will be moved to the new file area.
3. Move file(s) to RawDir.
a. Tag the file[s] to be moved.
b. Press F2 for RawDir.
c. Type in the desired path and press Enter.
d. When the RawDir-directory is displayed, press F6.
The tagged files will be moved to the RawDir-directory.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
NOTE : This method can be used to move files to a floppy disk !!
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
4. Move file(s) from RawDir.
a. Press F2 for RawDir.
b. Type the desired path and press Enter.
c. When the RawDir-directory is shown, tag the desired file(s).
d. Choose a file area.
e. Press F6.
The tagged files will be moved from the RawDir-directory to the
file area.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
NOTE : This method can be used to move files from a floppy disk !!
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
76
Delete Files and Comments (F8)
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Delete (F8) can be used to remove files and comments from the file
list or to delete files from the hard disk.
The files to be deleted are first tagged before pressing F8.
Removing the file from the file list requires confirmation, by
answering "Y" to the question "Delete [File name] ?". The file can
also be erased from the hard disk by answering "Y" to the question
"Delete file from disk ?". No remove or erase are performed if the
questions are answered "N".
If several files are to be deleted then the questions for the
first file can be answered "A" (All) and all the tagged files will
be deleted without requiring confirmation for each file.
F8 can also be used to delete comments in the filelist.
AddFiles or Comments (F7)
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The AddFile feature (F7) can be used to add files or comments to
RA's FDB.
Place the cursor at an area and press F7. A Window where you can
choose to import files or comments will now be shown.
Add Files
─────────
Add Files results in all files in the file area directory not
already present in the file list to be added to it. The Edit
feature (F4) can then be used to update the file descriptions.
Files(s) with RA's "Not avail." and "Unlisted" flags are not
imported to filelist.
FastFile checks for the file FILE_ID.DIZ in the imported archive -
this file should contain text describing the archive. If found,
FastFile will ask if this text is to be used as the description.
Add Comments
────────────
Add comments results in a new comment line in the filelist. The
Edit feature (F4) can then be used to enter the comment text.
77
Copy (F5)
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Copy (F5) works in the same way as Move (F6), except that the
files are copied instead of being moved. See Move (F6).
Copy can also be used to copy files from an archive to RawDir or
to a file area.
Ex. 1. Position the cursor before the file TEST.ZIP in the file
list and type V (view). The contents of the archive
TEST.ZIP are now displayed.
2. Tag all files in the archive using T (tag).
3. Press ESC to return to the file list.
4. Press F2 and create the directory C:\FFTEST.
5. Press F5. The files in the archive are unpacked and copied
to C:\FFTEST.
Yeah !! that's it ... a real nice feature ... !!
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
NOTE : The Copy feature (F5) can also handle floppy disks !!
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
ChangeLimits
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FastFile contains features to enable a user's Time and Download
Limits to be changed. The following keys are used.
TimeLimit
---------
Ctrl-Right - Increase 1 minute.
Ctrl-Left - Decrease 1 minute.
Ctrl-Up - Increase 10 minutes.
Ctrl-Dn - Decrease 10 minutes.
Ctrl-PgUp - Increase 100 minutes.
Ctrl-PgDn - Decrease 100 minutes.
DownloadLimit
-------------
Alt-Right - Increase 1 KB.
Alt-Left - Decrease 1 KB.
Alt-Up - Increase 10 KB.
Alt-Dn - Decrease 10 KB.
Alt-PgUp - Increase 100 KB.
Alt-PgDn - Decrease 100 KB.
78
Lock (Alt-L)
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The user's keyboard can be locked by using the LockKeyboard
feature. This is useful when SysOp wishes to show the user some
information without the user interfering.
Press Alt-L to lock the user's keyboard. FastFile shows that the
keyboard is locked by displaying "LockOut" at the bottom right of
the screen. Press Alt-L again to unlock the keyboard.
DOSShell (Alt-J)
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
There is an embedded DOSShell feature in FastFile. Pressing Alt-J
causes the DOS shell to be called. Entering "EXIT" in DOS causes
return.
Multitasking
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
BBSs are commonly run in multi-tasking systems. FastFile has
therefore been tested with the following programs, with excellent
results.
- OS/2 2.0 GA+SP, OS/2 2.1 GA+SP (2.11), OS/2 Warp v3 GA
- Windows 3.1, 3.11
- Desqview
FastFile determines automatically the multi-tasking system (OS/2,
Windows or Desqview) in which it is being run, and returns CPU
control to the system.
Batch files.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The FastFile archive contains two batch files that can be used to
log all uploads and downloads to UL.LOG and DL.LOG.
DOWNLOAD.BAT is executed after every download and logs the down-
load to DL.LOG. UPLOAD.BAT is executed after every upload and logs
the upload to UL.LOG.
UPLOAD.BAT and DOWNLOAD.BAT should be placed in your FastFile
directory.
You can modify UPLOAD.BAT and DOWNLOAD.BAT to scan and repack the
uploaded files etc.
79
Below are two batch examples from Richard Wallen and Kevin Miller:
Also find included in the FastFile archive FFCHECK.ZIP for virus-
scan with THDPRO. FFCHECK.EXE is written by Peter Harje, thanks
Peter !!

MultiNode Systems
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
NodePath =
──────────
This is used in systems with several lines. The path should be
that of the directory containing EXITINFO.BBS and DORINFO1.DEF for
the line and "BBSPath =" should specify the directory containing
FILES.RA.
Since EXITINFO.BBS and DORINFO1.DEF exist in different directorys
for the different lines, a different FF.CTL must be created for
each line and be specified in a NodePath statement. The NodePath
statement is the only necessary difference between the FF.CTL's.
- SET FASTFILE = must _NOT_ be present in AUTOEXEC.BAT.
- BBSPath = should specify the path of the directory containing
the files FILES.RA and LIMITS.CTL [C:\RA\].
- NodePath = should specify the path to the directory containing
the files EXITINFO.BBS and DORINFO1.DEF for the actual line.
[C:\RA\LINE1\]
- An FF.CTL should be present in each line's directory and the
NodePath = statement should be different in each FF.CTL.
- FastFile should be started from the line's directory.
[Task]
──────
The variable [Task] can be used in FF.CTL. Set "Task" to something
in DOS with "SET Task=n" in a batchfile, then use [Task] in the
FF.CTL files. Ex. Put "SET Task=1" in your bbsstart batchfile and
use [Task] in FF.CTL like this "NodePath = C:\RA\LINE[Task]\".
#Include:
─────────
#Include: can be used to include external textfiles to FF.CTL. IF
you have many FF.CTL's you can put all protocol settings in a
PROTOCOL.CTL and use "#Include: PROTOCOL.CTL" in all FF.CTL's.
By using #Include: you can make very small FF.CTL's in your line
directorys. Here is a example ...
Put your main FF.CTL in C:\FASTFILE and put a small FF.CTL in your
line directory (C:\RA\LINE1) looking like this :
----- START FF.CTL IN NODEPATH -----
#Include: C:\FASTFILE\FF.CTL
NodePath = C:\RA\LINE1
----- END FF.CTL IN NODEPATH -----
