MKNet - QWK Network Interface
Copyright by 1991, 1993 by Mark May
INTRODUCTION
This set of programs allows MK, RA1.1x, RA2.0, QuickBbs,
and SuperBbs to work with networks that are based on the QWK
format. It may also be manually configured to support other
BBS types that use Hudson, Squish, *.Msg, JAM, or Ezycom format
message bases. This is the "Node" program to support such a
network (similar in function to programs like RNet, QNet, or
TNet). To be a hub in a QWK based network you would also
need a QWK mail door that support net-status, such as MKQwk.
This set should include:
MKNet.Doc This documentation file
MKNetCfg.Exe Main configuration program
MKNetCfg.Ovr Overlay file for configuration program
MKNet.Exe The QWK net interface program
MKReset.Exe To Reset your Host LastRead pointers
Changes.Mkn History of changes to MKNet

INSTALLATION
Copy *.EXE and *.OVR from the MKNet archive to a directory
that is on your DOS path. Choose a directory that MKNet will
be run from (ie the current directory when your batch file calls
MKNet). Run MKNetCfg in this directory (see details on running
these programs below) to create your host configuration. MKNet
and MKNetCfg expect/update the host config file in the current
directory ONLY!
The message areas set-up to be echoed, should be set-up in
your Bbs config program as EchoMail areas.
Contact your hub next and make sure that he has given you
"Net-Status" in the conferences that you want to echo. To
prevent conferences pirating by non-network members, MKNet
will refuse to import messages from conferences that you
do not show Net-Status.

MKNet OPERATION
Operation of MKNet is simple. In your batch file change to
the drive and directory containing your HostName.Cfg and
execute MKNet. The actions that MKNet takes is based on the
combination of HostId.Qwk and HostId.Rep files that it
finds. If it finds only and existing HostId.Rep file it
will scan the message base for additonal messages to be
added to the existing REP file. If it finds a HostId.QWK
file (which would occur if you successfully connected with
your hub), It will delete the HostId.Rep file (which
presumably has now been sent to your hub since you have a
QWK file from him) and imports the QWK file into your
message base before deleting it. These actions mean that
operation is fully automatic with MKNet taking the proper
action to delete or create files as appropriate.
After running MKNet, you will need to execute either a comm
program with a script or automated comm program (like RoboComm)
to handle transferring your REP & QWK files to and from your
host. Your host will likely be able to help you in setting up
this part of the operation. It is also possible to do this
step manually if you prefer it that way.
After the transfers are finished, you will want to run MKNet
again to import the messages that you have received.

MKNet CONFIGURATION
In the directory that MKNet will be run from (not the directory
that MKNet is located in necessarily), run MKNetCfg to create
an HostName.Cfg file with the info MKNet needs in order to
operate. Just type:
MKNET HostName
In QWK Path: Path where your comm program places your inbound
*.QWK packets that you have downloaded from your
hub/host.
Out REP Path: Path where your comm program expects to find
your outbound *.REP packets to be uploaded to
your hub/host.
Work Path: A directory that can be used by MKNet to store
temporary files while processing the *.QWK and
*.REP packets. (MKNet will create a temporary
directory underneath te work path you supply to
help ensure that no file name conflicts occur).

HOST/HUB CONFIGURATION
Host Sysop - The name of your Hubs sysop. Messages from
some Bbs software will come thru with messages
from/to him listed as Sysop. This field is used
to change that to the correct name.
Host Tag Line - Most mail coming into your system will already
have a tagline from your hub, but when it is
missing, the tagline you enter here will be added
to the message. Note that some offline reader
taglines look like normal taglines and may prevent
this tagline from being added. This is the main
(default) tagline, used when the conference config
tagline number is set to zero.
Compression Type - Pick the compression type to be used on the
*.REP packets that you generate. The compression
type used on the *.QWK packets you receive is
automatically detected and the correct unpacker
will be called.
GateWay - Normally set this to NO. It is used to allow
conferences to be Gated between QWK format networks
and Fido-Technology networks, by creating the correct
message format and EchoMail.Bbs entries. MAKE SURE
THAT YOU HAVE THE PERMISSION OF THE NETWORK
ADMINISTRATORS BEFORE GATING ANY CONFERENCES!
Ignore Priv In - YES will cause MKNet to ignore private
messages when importing mail
Ignore Priv Out - YES will cause MKNet to ignore private
messages when exporting mail
Aggressive Locking - YES will cause MKNet to keep a message
base locked while one entire conference is
tossed. This can speed up importing, but may
delay message saving on other nodes in multi-node
systems

SETTING UP CONFERENCES
Conferences - Pick the conferences (initially marked available)
that you want to configure. For each one you pick
you will be able to enter a QWK area number (the
message area number used for the conference by your
host), a "lastread" number (to indicate the last
message imported/exported so that future exported
mail will start at the right place), and a
"MsgAreaId". By setting the Qwk area number to a
negative one, you make mark an area as unused/
available again. If you leave the tag# set to
zero the main tagline will be used. If you choose
a number between 1 and 20, one of the alternate
taglines from the alternate tagline config screen
will be used. If you are running one of the directly
supported BBS types, just press {Enter} on the
MsgAreaId field and MKNetCfg will bring up a picklist
of the areas on your BBS. When you select one, it
will fill in the MsgAreaId automatically for you.
If you are running another BBS type, or need to
choose message areas in addition to the ones from
your BBS, you may also manually type in a MsgAreaId.
The format of the MsgAreaId is as follows:
Hudson: 'H', followed by a 3 digit area number,
followed by the message base path.
H042C:\QUICK\MSGBASE
Squish: 'S', followed by the message base path and
name
SC:\MAX\MSGS\GENERAL
Fido (*.Msg) : 'F', followed by the directory name
FC:\FD\MAIL
Ezycom: 'E', followed by a 4 digit area number,
followed by the msg base path
E0050C:\Ezy\MsgBase
JAM: 'J', followed by the message base path and
name.
JC:\RA\MSGS\ADMIN
After you edit a conference setting, MKNetCfg will ask
if you want to update the last-exported number.
Normally you should answer YES, which will cause the
last exported to be set to the highest message in that
message base.

RENUMBERING THE MESSAGE BASES
*** IMPORTANT ***
The 1.1x version of MKNet changes the way MKNet keeps track of
the last message imported/exported for each area. It no
longer keeps the information in the lastread values of a fake
user on the BBS. This means that the last imported/exported
values are *not* updated by the BBS when you renumber now,
but instead now requires that MKReset be run when you
renumber the message base.
The normal procedure would be to run MKNet (to extract any
mail waiting to be exported), renumber the message base, and
then run MKReset (to get the last exported pointers back in
sync with the renumbered message base). If you do not do
this, you risk losing outgoing mail that was waiting to be
exported.

MKNet v1.15 REGISTRATION
A registration fee is not required for these programs.
I initially wrote this interface program to allow my
system to interface with P/Net (a small but interesting
Programmers echo network - that faded away).
I would appreciate it if you would fill in the form below
and return it to me with any questions, comments, or
suggestions, this will help in gauging the interest in this
program as well as determining future features needed.

Other Mythical Kingdom Software Bbs utilities include:
MKRead - a nice, easy to setup and use online message
reader for sysops to use. It is full-featured with
taglines (including modifiers), ansi message
viewing, and more.
MKToday - a configurable today's callers screen
generator. With this your Today's callers screen won't
have to look like everyone elses. (RA/Qbbs/Sbbs). Also
generates yesterday's callers and summary history screens.
MKXrs - an XRS message/reply tosser that improves
security over the normal method of using an echomail
tosser and provides the sysop with several options.
Messages are quickly tossed while the caller is still
online.
MKUti - a set of UTI drivers for Quickbbs/Superbbs/MK
to allow PC-Relay/Postlink (an echo network interface used
by RIME as well as other networks).
MXUTI, MOUTI, MRUTI - similar UTI drivers for Maximus, Opus,
and Remote Access
MKNet - a QWK mail network interface for QuickBbs or
Remote Access (preforms the function that Qnet or Rnet
perform for PCB for RA, so that RA Bbs's can participate
in QWK networks).
MKQwk - a fast QWK mail door for Remote Access. It supports
both multinode and net-status (for QWK networks). It is
very flexible and easy to set-up.
