└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Welcome to the BBS Advertiser! What exactly is this mysterious file
you might ask. It is a compilation (a first run) of known BBS ads which, from
time to time, appear in the various compressed files available for downloading
from *your* BBS! Those little files which add up to a significant amount of
disk space, increase your callers' transfer times and costs and are generally
inserted against the original author's wishes. Many of us have attempted to
'clean up' the mess created which is, at best, difficult.
Well, it has just become easier if you are using Fred Kantor's Content
Signature system or if you will be using ExZip v2.0 (or more recent). In
fact, it is becoming painless, fast and accurate! I will not take the time and
space here to elaborate on the proper use of the FWKCS program or for that
matter of the upcoming features of Exzip. I also will not waste your time
discussing the merits of ad files inserted into archives. Let's get started.
Keep this file if you are:
o Already using FWKCS version 1.06-1.09 or are using an
earlier version but will be upgrading to 1.09 soon;
o Are using a version of FWKCS above 1.06;
o Are planning to install the FWKCS system;
o Are planning to install ExZip 2.0 when released and
use it to control file duplication on your system.
Although the FWKCS system will allow you to select the names of the
database files, I will use their generic names here. All references to paths
and FWK system files will have to match YOUR system's current or future setup!
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ NOTICE! If you are setting up the FWKCS database for the first time │
├────────┬─ please note that the following update proceedure does NOT │
│ !!!! ├─ take into account possible cleanup you may wish to do on your │
│ !!!! ├─ system! The proceedure outlined below WILL DESTROY multiple │
│ !! ├─ references required for cleanup. We assume that you are │
│ ├─ familiar with FWKCS and have already cleaned up your system │
│ !! ├─ when you are reading this!! │
└────────┴─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
To make use of this database you simply need to merge the supplied
ADLIST.SRT file into your master database. Once this is done, the supplied ad
file signatures can be automatically identified and removed REGARDLESS of file
name, date, time! To perform the update and add the supplied signatures to
your database simply follow these few instructions.
1. Go to the directory where your CSLIST and CSLIST1 files are located.
Remember to use the proper name of the files if different on your
system!
2. Make SURE that the CSLIST1 database is EMPTY! You can easily tell if
this is so since CSLIST1.SRT will be ZERO bytes if so.
If CSLIST1.SRT is NOT zero bytes, perform a databse update by typing
FWKCS /vp (for v1.06) -or-
FWKCSF /vp (for v1.05)
3. Delete the CSLIST1 files! (They're empty now, no big deal!)
4. Remove the read only attribute from CSLIST.SRT and CSLIST.NDX with the
ATTRIB or other command.
5. REName CSLIST.SRT to CSLIST1.SRT and CSLIST.NDX to CSLIST1.NDX
6. REName ADLIST.* to CSLIST.*
7. Perfrom the actual database update by typing:
FWKCS /vp (for v1.06) -or-
FWKCSF /vp (for v1.05)
8. You are done!
The above steps, when done correctly with the proper file names will make
certain that the supplied signatures are added to your database, preserving all
your current data. ExZip v2.0 will automatically recognize and handle these
supplied signatures. For use with FWKCS you will need to refer to the
documentation of the /a3 and /a5 options, sub-option W.
Some final notes.. The names in this database are generic. If you
supply ZIP files with added files you will not know if yours is listed simply
by looking. But ExZip and FWKCS will know!! This database is a dynamic one.
Updates will be released as information becomes available. To that end, I ask
anyone interested in this subject to forward ANY unwanted files found in
archives for inspection to us at the above telephone number. Folks, we're
talking BBS ad files, not programs or documentation! :)
Any questions or suggestions on this release can be forwarded to me at
the above number or through the ILink(sm) network's Sysop echo. Happy dialing!
