The Year of Our Lord, Two Thousand
Two has arrived. It came to Holly, CO,
on a blustery cold midnight, amid
tooting horns and flashing fireworks.
Bub McGee always saves up fireworks
from the Fourth of July for the New
Year celebration. We gather at the
church, eat chilli, play bingo, and
swap lies until the hallowed hour.
Then Sheri lit up the candles
on my birthday cake: fifty two of them
this New Year's day. Good thing Bub is
also the Fire Marshall!
Anyway, the new year is upon us. I
am older -- exactly when do I get
wiser? And we have a lot to look
forward to in the coming months.
Last year was a huge transition.
Maurice Jones passed away. Maurice
Randall bought up Creative Micro
Design's Commodore product rights and
brought back into production some of
the best peripherals in all of
computerdom. The LUCKY Report ended
last month so Dale Sidebottom and Rolf
Miller could focus on uniting our
various and sundry users groups
through UCUGA. Two new SuperCPU
operating systems joined forces: CLiPs
and JOS became =WINGS=. And Jeri
Ellsworth showed the Chicago Expo how
far she has come on the C=1 -- then
had the prototype ripped off.
And Sheri and I discovered that
editing the Premier Software Digest is
not just a walk in the park. I haven't
had more fun in ages -- but it can be
a job.
I must thank all of you who have
pledged your support to the "8-bitter"
end -- The end won't come this year!
We might miss a deadline, but every
issue which even one of you has
ordered [will] be shipped! We have
subscriptions up to 236 already. And I
can see no reason to not keep cracking
through that number.
LOADSTAR has changed some this
year. We have published virtually
every piece of new software that
arrived in our mailbox. (Some are
slated for later for various reasons).
And we have mined the LOADSTAR Library
to find quality programs and
challenges from among the Oldie
Goldies. You will note that our
categories this month are more "theme"
oriented than function focused. In a
way, part of each issue becomes a
mini-collection of related software.
I am a media generalist, which
means that I know a lot but for years
couldn't find a job that employed my
knowledge. LOADSTAR is that job. I
couldn't be happier.
And what I have been doing is
looking for the entertainment factor
in LOADSTAR. Some are entertained by
good productivity software. Others
like to think about programming.
Others still just want a good game to
curl up with on a cold night. And
still others enjoy a well-wrought
story told with images, music, and
words.
Which reminds me -- Robert
Bernardo sent me a mystery screen play
script. That is why I have developed
MediaMeister! The shooting has begun
and soon you will see the first C-64
Photo/Impressionistic Media
Presentation (P.I.M.P?)!
Speaking of Photo/Impressionism,
the cover graphic came from a JPEG of
a scan of The Guinness Book of World
Records. I converted it to GIF format
and brought it over through GoDot.
This is the kind of back room art I
can accomplish. You can too!
I have carried on a bit too long
-- not only is it past my bedtime, the
rooster alarm just went off! Cock-a-
Doodle-Doo!
